Paul is the better player, was recruited by Harden himself, he wants to be in Houston, and he attracts talented players to Houston. Houston turns it down easily..
It is really not about being #1. It is about living in LeBron's shadows. LeBron gets all the praise and no one on the team gets any credit.
LeBron gets to be the #1 option, the spotlight player, the general manager, the coach, the shot caller. He can get coach fired and players traded. LeBron traded away the #1 pick for Wiggins then proceeds to dangle Love like a carrot every off-season for years.
Average 25/5 on 48/44/88 in 2016, 26/6 on 47/37/91 in 2017, but LeBron always needs more. LeBron is disappointed about the Cavs offseason and proceeds to leak Irving's trade request.
Irving is now all of a sudden a team cancer who can't lead a team anywhere. You got LeBron-stans, Wizards, Celtics, and Blazers fans coming out of the woodwork to put Irving down.
