Fault Cameron for Vela's goal, he was responsible for closing the space once Vela cut back inside. Nonetheless, great counter attack by Mexico.

Bradley goal...wow! And he's finally playing good. If Gonzalez was better at heading, he might have a brace. Couple good chances there.

Ends 1-1. USA now 3 unbeaten in a row at Azteca (win and 2 draws). USA in 3rd with 8 points and 4 games left.

Yedlin looked better against Aquino than he did Lozano. Cameron and Ream did well. Acosta looked good for not having much experience. Not a Pulisic type of game, got himself in good position at times. Better 2nd half than 1st. I'll take at least 1 at Azteca any time.

Pulisic would definitely like that shot at the end back but he played pretty well IMO

Our offense won a bunch of corners, we really should have done better on some of them.

id like to see CJ Sapong at least get some minutes in these big games. I feel like him and Pulisic could play well off each other

I actually don't mind the 3-4-3 that we played against Mexico but I would like to see it with our best players in the formation. Slot Brooks into the middle or left of the back 3. Yedlin & Fabian Johnson as the wingbacks. Keep Bradley & Acosta in CM. Pulisic & Nagbe as the right and left wings and whoever is in form as the striker.

A draw is about as good as we could expect, and the gameplan was clearly to go in and claw out a tight draw. We knew Mexico didn't really need to win this so we packed it in early.

I want to get mad at 35 year old Beasley for even being in this lineup, but the reality of the situation is that with Fabian out we have very few reliable options at that role who can just go out and put in a solid, if unspectacular shift. Add to that our lineup was clearly built to secure 1 point with Arriola as an attacking winger (he usually plays wingback for Tijuana; shakey in defense at times, but great going forward), Wood at ST (high defensive workrate unlike Jozy or Clint) and two CDMs in an already defensive lineup. We had one creative player on the pitch and a bunch of bulldozers.

I think in the future we'll see Arriola take up a wingback spot, but this was all about playing it safe. I just hoped the U.S. would have more talent at this point so we could start aiming higher. We're definitely in a transitional phase, but with Haji, Josh Perez, Puli, Acosta, Miazga, Carter-Vickers and the many young GKs there's definitely hope. Depressing that only 1.5 of those guys is ready to contribute today.

full match, if u want to watch again, or missed it

when i saw the formation,
...............wood
cp...............................arriola
.........acosta.....bradley
beasley.........................yedlin
......ream....cam....omar
i was unsure.
then i saw the players selected,
and was very worried about a Beasley + Ream combo
luckily, mexico didnt really attack them.
i felt like they continued to try and force it down the middle,
and lots of times tried to attack Yedlin.

give me
Morris > Arriola
Brooks > Ream
Fabian > Beasley

im a huge fan of Acosta.
i think he works way better with Bradley then other CM/DMs that wev tried.
id still like to see Dax in there.

the ref was not good.

Beasley took a beating, that first foul he took, should have been a yellow, at like 2:28 into the game
then the next challenge on wood, right after, could have been a yellow too..an easy call..replay even shows the ref looking right at it
give those 2 yellow cards, and the game changes, drastically.
he also was calling fouls before they were even happening,
getting tricked plenty by the mexican players going down on light contact.

my general view of team usa,
whenever we play a top team, we must play defensive and counter to score goals.
vs equal or lower teams, we can play as we like.

also, situational results are important.
r we going for a win or a tie.

those things can influence the selections and formation.

July 1, 2017
4:45 PM ET
MNT vs Ghana

anyone watch this ?

Lineups:
USA:
............................1-Brad Guzan (capt.)
19-Graham Zusi,, 21-Matt Hedges, 5-Matt Besler, 2-Jorge Villafaña
..............................13-Dax McCarty,
..............................23-Kellyn Acosta
6-Kelyn Rowe................................................20-Paul Arriola
...............................10-Joe Corona
...............................14-Dom Dwyer

(9-Gyasi Zardes, 62)
(7-Kenny Saief, 71)
(11-Alejandro Bedoya, 72)
(8-Jordan Morris, 76)
(3-Omar Gonzalez, 88)

Subs not used:
12-Bill Hamid, 22-Sean Johnson,
4-Matt Miazga, 15-Eric Lichaj,
7-Cristian Roldan, 18-Juan Agudelo

Ghana keeper should have gotten a Red Card
thats a super easy call.
cleats up, 2 footed challenge outside the box.

Dwyer was very good.
needs to finish better.
had 2 or 3 chances he took too soon, instead of taking his time and knowing what to do.
but, his all the time pressure created lots of chances for usa.
was very different from the altidore / dempsey combo of only exploding when theres a chance.

Acosta + Dax combo was great.
never felt there were any gaps,
possession was good and balanced,
neither had any turnovers that created any dangerous chances for Ghana.

Corona, Rowe, Arriola
they all played good.
but to me, they are all just B- players.

Villafana.
mixed feelings.
he pulled the jersey that created a PK chance for Ghana.
it was his foul that gave them a Free Kick and their goal.
but, he was never beat 1v1,
and his high pressure with great dribble created our first goal

Besler was good.
took command of the D and talked alot, had good communication.

Hedges,
who i really like, had some indecisive moments.
maybe was nervous, idk.
never made a mistake, was in good position.
there was just something lacking.

Zusi,
played Fullback.
wasnt really challenged 1v1,
and that made him look real good.
its obvious he knows how to pass and combine with the players around him.
SKC have been using him as a FB also,
and u can tell, hes learning the position.

From the subs, the only things noticeable,
Morris had a perfect left footed cross to Bedoya for a goal, just blocked by the keeper.
thats right
a Left Footed cross.

Saief,
looked confident with the ball,
so much so, the defenders didnt even challenge him or try to poke it away.
he got injured, so hes OUT of the Gold Cup.
kind of disappointed.

The U.S. is not going to the World Cup. Words I never thought I would type. Yes, they've had several mishaps in the youth setup in the last few years (no Olympics since 2008, U-20 missed '11 WC, and U-17 missed '13 WC) but the Senior team missing the 2018 WC? Not even a thought. It's embarrassing, but it's pretty much what the team deserves. They lost 2 home games and won none on the road in the final round. They needed to make up for those losses to Mexico in Columbus and Costa Rica in NJ, and weren't able to do it...so, yes, this was very much deserved.

I know you guys were fed up with Klinsmann and everyone knows he's not the greatest coach/won't lead you further than your abilities, but at least he tries to built your youth system and plays those guys.

Though, appointing Bruce Arenas after that was just a joke and screamed MLS influence on US Soccer, trying to force them to play more of their current players/"stars" instead of bringing in younger guys or players from abroad.

Overall the US needs to keep working on developing their young players/academies and play them, even if the lose a game or two.
You've got a very talented guy in Pulisic and some others(I really like Tyler Adams of New York RB) who could help in the future and now is the time to play those guys.

Also, the next manager should be someone with a clear system and style of play, which is the only way(thanks to the talent level) for the US to have a shot at not just qualifying but also doing something in tournaments.

Wow the first goal was totaly bad. What was Howard thinking? He could easily take 1-2 steps pack and just clear it high to a corner. He jumped way to early and I think any average GK would have saved that.

Howard is done.
And he's not the only one in the squad.

Embarassing.

Klinnsmann is for sure laughing at us.

I typically don't pay much attention in the Concacaf due to the obvious countries should win.

US, Lalas was right on you. Arenas should never been brought back, the system needs a retool.

What hurts, is that this omission will hurt the sport here in the states.

not looking for an overnight success but the strides were there... MLS growing, Soccer relevancy in sports talk....

this sets us back after getting a good to great response from the last World Cup among the US fans.

The MLS has expanded rapidly but the quality is still awful compared to leagues around the world. It's a joke.

The only time soccer is talked about is during the World Cup & an event like yesterday. Otherwise, it's nonstop football talk, basketball, baseball in October. Sports like Golf during the Masters, etc. Meanwhile, little to no soccer coverage. Why? because the MLS is an afterthought. Even in a city like Seattle, where the Sounders draw 30-40k per match, the team still gets very little media coverage. Local Sports talk revolves around football & the Seahawks 95% of the time. The MLS doesn't move the needle. It never will in this country.

The key for Mls is to keep improving the development of domestic players. That will help the quality more than anything. Right now, I think the quality of international players is a good bit better than domestic ones and that gap will grow before it shrinks with expansion teams coming in. Getting rid of some of the crazy roster rules will help too.

I mean really, the entire development and scouting process needs to be fixed.
