So Long Straily

Heyman says the cost for Straily is a “Sonny Gray-type price”, quoting a National League executive. Eff that noise. Moving on.

Dodgers Trade for Luis Ysla

Post#844 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 30, 2017 7:03 am

This seems like a promising project for the Dodgers' developmental staff to work on. If we can smooth out his mechanics and improve his command, Ysla would be a great weapon out of the bullpen. Low-risk, high-reward proposition.

Rosenthal on Gray; Heyman on Dodgers

Post#852 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 30, 2017 7:24 pm

Ken Rosenthal, Facebook.com (7/29/17)
The Dodgers seemingly are the most serious threat to the Yankees on Gray, but as per their custom at the deadline, they are working numerous other angles. Gray, Rangers ace Yu Darvish and Orioles closer Zach Britton are the Dodgers’ three main targets, according to sources. If the team cannot land one at a price it deems acceptable, it simply will drop down to the next rung of talent.

Who else? The Astros and Brewers are not serious players for Gray, sources say. The Braves’ recent contact with the Athletics has been limited. The Cubs want Gray but do not appear to line up with the A’s, not after trading two of their top prospects for Jose Quintana.

Some Yankees officials have suspected all along that they might be the last team standing for Gray, a belief that might only strengthen their negotiating resolve. Such an approach, however, would be dangerous, leaving the Yankees vulnerable to a team making a late entry into the bidding.
...

In any case, Gray’s career 3.42 ERA is exactly the same as Darvish’s in a comparable number of innings — 782 2/3 for Darvish, 705 for Gray. Darvish has the higher strikeout rate by a considerable margin, but Gray has a better walk rate and lower opponents’ OPS. Oh, and Darvish, too, has an injury history — Tommy John surgery in March 2015, shoulder discomfort in ’16.

The Yankees view Gray as a No. 3 starter, maybe a No. 2 on certain days, but not a No. 1. Fair enough — Darvish probably is the guy you’d pick if you had one game to win. But again, the contractual situations are entirely different. Darvish is a rental. Gray, Severino, Montgomery and Tanaka (if he stays) could form the nucleus of the Yankees’ rotation through at least 2019.

Jon Heyman, FanRagSports.com (7/30/17)
The Dodgers have been talking to the Rangers about star starter Yu Darvish and appear to be the favorite there, and are also pursuing at least a pair of top lefty relievers, Zach Britton and Justin Wilson. It’s possible the Dodgers could add Darvish and one of the two lefty relievers if things work out.

Darvish has drawn interest from multiple teams, but the other main contender, the Yankees, seem focused on completing a Sonny Gray trade, at least at the moment. The Yankees could get back in on Darvish, but for now the Dodgers would appear to be the most logical landing spot for the free-agent-to-be.

The Dodgers have checked in on Gray themselves, but appear more interest in Darvish, which could be because there are concerns about their own ace Clayton Kershaw, who is out with a back ailment (though Kershaw is expected back at some point this year).

The deadline has me incredibly nervous.

I do not mind standing pat.

In the event that we dont stand pat, I will spin this as us having a surplus and another shot at the international market next July.

the Yanks aren't giving anything higher than Estevan Florial. the A's want a center fielder as the main piece of Gray's trade.

Alex Verdugo is 36 spots ahead of Florial in the mid season adjusted baseball america's top 100 prospects, and is ahead of supposedly untouchables of the yanks farm hands of Blake Rutherford and Clint Frazier.

I am starting to think that it will be more likely for us to grab Gary over Yu, as Jon Daniels looks like he will be happy to get that compensatory 2nd ( or was it third?) round pick.
ehhhhh f it.
