Magic Use Stretch Provision On C.J. Watson

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Mon Jul 31, 2017 10:26 am

A few days ago our own Keith Smith that The Magic used their stretch provision on C.J. Watson.

Read on Twitter

It's interesting as to why they did this but The Magic will have $333.333 in dead money in 18-19 and 19-20 on their cap.

I am glad they did not do this with a bigger contract.

why is it good to do this on a small contract and not a big contract?

Not sure why they would do this. $1 mil isn't much in the grand scheme of things and it would've been over and done with after this season. Not a big deal but wasn't necessary.

Apparently they did it to save $666.666 dollar this season to be able to sign Khem birch

My initial reaction was one of puzzlement, though I suppose I can see the merit in this if it facilitates the Birch signing. The stretch provision seemed like more of a landmine than an actual tool. It was only ever going to be useful for the singular purpose of freeing up some cap space at the expense of the future, so I'm glad that we used it on a small contract as opposed to a large one.

Apparently it had to do with signing Birch. It's the only explanation.

I'm just happy they did not do this with Biyombo or Augustin as that would have been a good chunk of dead weight for a number of years.

I don't know if waiving DJ would be all that bad. Almost from an addition by subtraction standpoint. The guy at this point in his career doesn't care about helping the team win, it's blatant. We'd instantly improve our bench if he just wasn't in an Orlando uniform this season and Mack/____ (SL/GLeague) would at least play with an ounce of effort.

We can only use this provision one time correct? If so why not hold on to it and keep in case we need to waive someone else next summer? If its only a one time use it seems like a complete waste to use it on Watson's $1M.

Not the case.

Teams can use the stretch provision as often as they want.

Hypothetically, if the Magic were to stretch Augustin, they'd spread his remaining 21.75M over the next seven seasons at 3.10M per season. If they were to stretch Biyombo, they'd spread his remaining 51M over the next seven seasons at 7.28M per season.

Stretching Augustin and Biyombo would open up about 13.87M in additional cap space in each of the next three seasons and add 10.38M to the books in Years 4-5-6-7.

That Birch might be non-guaranteed with his contract (he hinted at that in his interview) makes this particular perplexing.

Might

But it doesn't work like that, if u offer a contract (even partially gtd), you need to have the full amount available before u can offer that contract

He can score...I'm not a fan, but he won't play (for long)(I hope) if he's not contributing or playing D. If he's the worst guy on your team, you're not too bad anymore (bench wise). I wouldn't be shocked if somebody took a shot at him, he's pretty good in a limited role, points off the bench, etc although limited overall.

I could see him going to Brooklyn, scoring 17 a game, contributing zero wins, and the world would be praising his deal...no thanks, we've been there.

A reasonable explanation and a good point.

The bolded statement above reminds me of the Nets/Blazers trade last week from which the Blazers acquired and used the stretch provision on former Magic player Andrew Nicholson for the next seven seasons. Dumb signing by the Wizards at the time. The Blazers lost TWICE! They were better off letting Crabbe take the Nets offer and save their cap space last summer. Now their stuck with a stretch provision for seven seasons. Blazers really outsmarted themselves on that play.

Whats our cap number now? I think the magic did this to sign birch, yet still be under for trade flexibility.
