Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Aug 2, 2017 1:54 pm

The Minnesota Timberwolves have made an extension offer to Andrew Wiggins.

As a member of the 2014 draft class, Wiggins is eligible for his rookie scale extension.

Wiggins can sign a five-year deal worth as much as approximately $148 million.

why would it? presumably the cavs would give him a similar extension to what the wolves would, so even if he re-ups with the wolves a trade would still be viable

CBA. Poison pill makes trading difficult. MIN can also offer a fifth guaranteed year and greater raises, and he keeps his chance at the Designated Player bonus open for the future.

Plus the local Minnesota sportwriters and even the owner are saying he's off the table.

so let's say the wolves foolishly sign him to a max deal. what restrictions are there on trading that 5 year contract?

If MIN extends Wiggins for the max, the player's trade value for the receiving team is the average of his current salary and the average of the extension. For Wiggins at the max, it would be the average of $7.47 now and 5 years at $148, or averaging about $18.55 mil that the Cavs would have to match. Kyrie makes $18.7, so no problem for the Cavs, right?

Unfortunately, MIN is over the cap too, and they have to use Wiggins current deal for salary matching. MIN can't trade a $7.47 mil player, and take back $18.7. So they need to keep sending out more salary to even out there end, and the Cavs need to send salary back to even out theirs, and it escalates to a point that it becomes nearly impossible for two teams over the cap to make a trade, with one of the players getting a giant raise in an extension. Some nickname that a poison pill rule.

This is actually good news for Cleveland. Nothing would make him more appealing to Cleveland than to have a young star locked up for 6 years. IF it's true that Wiggins camp said he would welcome a trade to Cleveland, I hope they can get it done. It should be Wiggins or no deal. Sound familiar T-Wolves? LOL

I think Jimmy Butler will help with that. Jimmy is the type of player who holds his teammates accountable and doesn't tolerate poor effort in practice or in games. It definitely led to some drama in Chicago, but honestly, I think it will be good for a very young Minnesota team that put up some VERY questionable defensive efforts last year. Wiggins has all the physical tools to be a good defender. With Thibs and Jimmy in his ear, he should at least become passable.

They never said he'd welcome a trade. Cleveland is a cesspool and LeBron will leave you again. LOL

Oh, and unlike your team, our team says no deal.

Cleveland saying "deal" won them a championship. of course, kevin love is better than kyrie irving. but both are better than wiggins

A player signed to designed player rookie extension can't be traded till first year of that extension is completed. This rule was added in the recent cba to prevent James Harden like situations where Thunder already gave their single 5 year designated extension to Westbrook (KD was already extended before 2011 cba) and could only offer a 4 year max (which they still tried to negotiate lower) but when he got traded to rockets they were able to offer him 5 years because they had not used their designated extension yet. The new cbas gave each team two (in minny case they will use for Wiggins and KAT) if the team acquired the player during their rookie deal in exchange the player basically after he signs is untradeable for 1 year into the deal. It is to prevent players like a 3rd star on some teams to force trades when his current one can't offer him the 5 year extension. If Wiggins signs, he can't be included in a Kyrie deal even if he wanted to.

I think the only impasse in his contract negotiations might be that the wolves refuse to include an opt out on the final year and like Damian Lillard and Paul George may have included a provision where if he meets the revised rose rule requirement (make an all nba team or voted in as allstar starter just once, win defensive player of the year or mvp this season) he won't get the full bonus pay bump to 30% of the cap - I believe both PG and Lillard negotiated like 27.5%(2.5% bonus instead of full 5%) while Westbrook surrendered his entire bonus back (stayed at 25% despite making 2 all-nba teams) when he signed his rookie extension.

Wow what a crazy idea offering an extension before another team can offer a crazy contact

They are maxing him out - the only incentive to do an extension is if you get a discount like Bucks did with Giannis. The other scenario where an extension is proper is if you have a bona-fide star and you max him out early in exchange for him forfeiting an opt out so locking him for 6 years (5 +1 yr left on rookie deal) vs letting him go to restricted free agency get a max offer sheet you match like Otto Porter that is likely 4 years with an opt out (so you only have him locked up for 4 (rookie +3) vs 6). The cap is always rising and young players who excel early tend to get better so it is much cheaper to lock them down at the max term you can before they become a ufa.

Wolves know Wiggins might not be worth his deal today but he's young enough he could break out at some point during it plus having him locked up for 6 years makes him a more valuable asset in potential trades in the future.

Thibbs has a 3 year shelf life at best everywhere he goes. He's basketball's version of Mike Keenan. He yells and screams and eventually players tune him out. If they really want Wiggins to develop, they better look to the assistants or, eventually, a new head coach.
