The City & the Port are going to win out here.

Except for the financing part. The Key Arena proposal requires city money to front the overhaul. Also remember that before any of this gets finally decided we'll have a new mayor and possibly some new city council members.

Besides, currently there is no problem with Key Arena. It's breaking even. No hurry to do anything.

edit: I want the arena in SODO since I live in West Seattle and remain optimistic . Not giving up goddammit. :D

I live on the Eastside & prefer Sodo myself like most others. But, I'm also a realist.

The real question is: will you drop allegiance to your current favorite team in favor of the Sonics?

My favorite teams were always 1a) Denver 1b) Seattle 3) San Antonio and that wouldn't change with a new team in Seattle.

I've been asked this question more than once lol. The Sonics were my first love. Always will be. Became a fan at an early age.

Growing up in Seattle during the 90's, it was kinda hard not to be!

Shawn Kemp & Gary Payton were my idols. I met Detlef Schrempf & he signed a ball for me when I was very young. I still have a photo of it somewhere. :D

I went to a lot of games during the early 2000's. The last game I went to was in 2006. The same year the OKC group bought the team. I went to fanfest & got free tickets. The team left the following year. :(

I still bleed Green & Gold. Always will!

Yes I assumed they would become your number 1 team - but will you still have some love for the Warriors?

It's a sports travesty that the Sonics aren't in the NBA.

Of course!

I jumped on the bandwagon. I have no problem saying that.

But, I love watching the brand of basketball they play. Everything kind of fell perfectly. They're this great team that beat the enemy & then KD came aboard! I couldn't have written a more perfect ending. 8-)

No favorite team but after watching Sonicsgate on YouTube to learn what happened and finding out the lies that it took to steal the team I started really wanting the wrong corrected and rooting for Seattle to get their team back. (A team with a championship shouldn't lose their team. Can't stop old-already done stuff like Minneapolis Lakers but going forward) I follow bringbackSonics on Twitter too

It actually doesn't really matter who the mayor is.
This thing goes way deeper and at least half of the city council seem to be very close(or easily pressured) to the port and their ideas.
And it's not just the port but rather the old power houses like the Seattle Times, Mariners etc., who don't want Hansen playing in their backyard or just simply(the Port) want to get their fingers on his land.

A logic solution would be to grant the street vacation to Hansen and also give Leiweke a shot at his plans with the KeyArena, but that's not something the city seems to be interested in and I'm pretty sure that Leiweke would run, as soon as something like this(competition) would be announced.

Mark Cuban was also the only guy to vote against the relocation of the Sonics(with Paul Allen being a no vote) and didn't seem to have much influence back then.

Expansion will be available when it's going to be available, as long as someone will meet the asking price.
Though, until then the league needs to start working on those who're still losing money, even though there's money sharing and the biggest tv deal ever...

Relocation and expansion are different things. Expansion takes profits away from current owners.

Yup, off the strength of Ken Griffey Jr.
As a kid I liked the Steelers & Griffey so I stuck with those, Pittsburgh and Seattle from there.

Any teams besides NOLA losing money regularly? Who else would be close to this franchise in terms of being likely to be relocated?

I do believe Mexico City would be the only place that could be a threat to Seattle if relocating a team was on the table in the near future.

Unless Ballmer moves the Clippers, no team is moving.

Does Mexico City actually have billionaires looking to poach a team, that we know about?

None that I no of and it's a long shot but if they do have any billionaires with interest in the nba they'd get a shot to voice their plan because of the possible huge profits to the league. The nba is also known for pushing boundaries recently so this would be right up their alley.

The league wants an even amount of teams, so naturally they will add another.

The question is, who?

Keep in mind you don't look at city size, you look at METRO area size, as well as the economy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_primary_statistical_areas_of_the_United_States

Here's a list of some possibilities:

Kansas City: No team in the huge state of Missouri which also encompasses St. Louis, and I believe they have built a modern arena to attract the NBA. St. Louis just lost their 2nd NFL team in 30 years, and have lost bball teams before, so I'm going to go with KS over St. Louis.

Vancouver: I think this would be a great market, a large, wealthy growing city with a huge immigrant population. They supported the Grizzlies well. Problem is it's pretty close to Seattle and I don't think the NBA would want to put two new teams in markets so close to each other. Canada's population is also roughly the size of California's and California has 4 teams.

Louisville: College bball town, have built an NBA arena I believe like St. Louis, at the very least I believe they want a team?

Pittsburgh: Famous, well known city but is it a basketball town?

San Diego: See Pittsburgh.

There are others: Virginia Beach, Las Vegas, Tampa, Cincinnati but I don't think they are really basketball markets.

So where should the NBA expand in addition to Seattle WHEN THE TIME COMES?

I haven't read the entire 13 pages so far, but Seattle and Vancouver are about 120 apart. Philly and New York is about 95 miles. Philly to Washington is about 140 miles. I don't think it's that big of an issue. Metro Vancouver area has over 2 million people. I'd guess that half the population of British Columbia lives in the Vancouver metro area.

I still hold out hope!

Honestly, no.

Having gone down that road with the Kings, I've come to the realization that relocation isn't an option. The league will continue to use Seattle as leverage. At the end of the day, it won't amount to anything.

Which is why, it's expansion or bust! And expansion as we know, isn't on the table.

That's because of this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_megalopolis Boston to down to D.C. Has a population over 50 million. "Distance" isn't the same in the rest of the country/continent as it is on the upper east coast for these purposes.
