Haven't read it, but from my friends who have, sounded like an easy call for a TV series over a film.

^this.

I think Ron Howard initially wanted to do a mini-series on the Dark Tower a few years back for HBO(?), but it never came to fruition.

Ron Howard's plan was to do movies mixed with a TV series covering Roland's past, which was still the plan if this movie does well.

Ya I've read a few fan theories about walking around the wall and how Bran f'd things up.

Bran is going to be too important to this series, they didn't keep him alive this long and be so useless forever, if there wasn't some big payoff at some point.

But it doesn't matter to me if he becomes the savior for all of westeros or the cause of it's destruction. I truly dislike his character. I haven't liked him in a long time. Everyone dies because of him, and he's just useless little chit. People always trying to save him, wars fought over him, but he sucks. Little damn twat. The old 3 eyed raven was much better than his pathetic kid. He gets everyone killed, he created the most tortured soul in the history of westeros with Hodor, he's just fargs everything up, and he's a tool. And when he finally gets reunited with his sister, his first conversation with her is, "Damn girl you looked fine the first night of your endless nights of rape!" WTF, you like causing PTSD on people, especially the ones who care about you? Well you **** with HODOR's mind, so I guess that's your M.O.

Blah blah blah, He will save the day or cause more problems with his timelooping, and it will be all about him and his actions make the world turn. Ugh. I don't want to give so much importance to such an annoying character. I would cheer if someone could just shove a dagger through his neck and eliminate him from the show.

So what is the next Game of Thrones? Seems like HBO is running out of shows somewhat, now that Sopranos, Deadwood, etc. are all ended or like GOT, coming to an end. Westworld is great, but doesn't seem like a show that would/should be more than another season or two.

Good question. But like you said they have time. One year left on GoT and at least a couple more on Westworld, if not more. Supposedly there is several GoT spinoffs in the works and I would assume they go with at least one of them. I'm sure some new shows will come later this year as well and see what sticks. They also have gold in Silicon Valley/Veep combo. Though they probably only have a couple years left too.

And I'm sure you heard all the controversy on the Confederate show they started developing with the GoT guys. It's an interesting idea

Especially since they're biggest draws outside of GoT lately seem to be mini-series.

I listened to an interview with Jimmy Iovine on Howard Stern a few weeks back and I've seen Straight Outta Compton so I didn't know if it was worth watching 'The Defiant Ones' on HBO. But a friend recommended so I watched the first episode last night.

Gotta say it was dope. Love how they set it up. East Coast/West Coast. Both Engineers. Both tireless workers. Both passionate about music. One black, one white. Two halves eventually coming togethers. Ebony and ivory. I'm hooked.

I love silicon valley but I think it's getting close to running its course. How many times can you become a millionaire and then lose it all a moment later over and over again. And losing tj Miller is a blow. I still love the show but I'm not sure how many times they can hit the reset button.

Westworld is clearly the next GoT and a big part of the production delay was mocking up seasons deep into the future. I think I heard they had outlines for 6 or 7 seasons. Shame that The Leftovers was at its core just too sad to continue for more than 3 seasons. We'll see about The Deuce. There's another seasons of True Detective in the works. Glare sounds promising. HBO finding another great series is the last thing I'd be worried about.

Noooooooooooooooooooo. I hadn't heard TJ is leaving the show, that sucks. Agree with you, it is in the twilight of its life, but really enjoyable, right up there with Flight of the Conchords as just a cool, original comedy.

I had no idea they were going to try and milk Westworld that long...I think that will prove to be a mistake. True detective second season was a let down to me.

No idea what the Deuce or Glare is

I'd say Kingdom's final season was melodramatic and forced, but the finale was appropriate (and again could warrant Emmy noms for Jonathan Tucker and Frank Grillo), other than not addressing the question of what happened to that **** whose dramatic overreaction at the end of last episode (an example of how the final season was melodramatic and forced) set the stage.

Did HBO do a viking thing? I love the show Vikings, but an HBO version would be pretty epic.

True Detective's third season has Mahershala Ali attached, which guarantees it will be watchable.

But I agree that Westworld is supposed to be the next GOT. "Confederate" might be that show but it depends on how it's done - it could either be really good or a total disaster. David Simon of "The Wire" and "Show Me A Hero" has a new show coming next month called "The Deuce" which is about the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York, staring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal. That could be good.

I don't put comedies in the same category - I've watched Veep and I thought it was alright, Silicon Valley was meh, Curb Your Enthusiasm is spectacularly good - but none of them are as iconic or all-consuming as some of their great dramas.

The previews for Stephen King's other vehicle, Mr. Mercedes, on the Audience Network, look interesting. I'm a sucker for noir and psychological thrillers involving serial killers; what can I say. Enjoyed Dexter until the last couple of seasons when they were really stretching, first season of True Detective (lost interest the 2nd), and American Psycho + Silence of the Lambs are among my film favorites. This looks the most like season 1 of True Detective (although don't expect it to be as good, as that would be tough). It's a 10-part miniseries. It was previewed after the finale for Kingdom. That means I can actually catch it before the first episode (next Wed., Aug. 9). Big factor in whether or not I can get into a drama. Otherwise you're way behind and it's ruined, unless you're lucky to catch it early on OD or a marathon from the beginning. Feel like I could get into Fargo and Mr. Robot, but I missed the boat.

Just got back from "The Dark Tower." I thought it was OK. There were some issues - it definitely felt like a case of too many people trying to mess with the story so it ends up just being stretched thin in multiple directions. I'm fine with a short movie, and actually am OK with most of the changes made in regards to the narrative, but they spent so much time with the exposition that by the time you get to the meat of the story there's probably 60 minutes left. But I did like most of the stuff with Roland and Jake.
The other really baffling decision is how it ends.
Spoiler:
They're clearly setting up for another movie but we don't get any sign that Walter is still on the loose (he surely is) or anything like that.

Overall I'd give it a 6/10. I didn't hate it, and being a fan of the source material I certainly know it would have been much better had they just followed King's formula more, but it's far from the worst movie I've ever seen which is what some are making it out to be. I'd rather watch this 10 times than "Catwoman" once more. The good news with the way it leaves off they can still salvage it I think, should there be another one. I'd just recommend they keep Akiva Goldsman as far away as possible.

Edit: Oh, and JunkieXL's score is pretty good.

Just saw Dunkirk. Loved it.... I'd put it up there with all of Nolan's best movies.

ETA - Only nitpick is that Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy did not need to be in the movie.

I thought the premise for the new show (Confederates won the civil war) was actually a really clever way to investigate race and rights in real life modern america. What am I missing? Is anyone dense enough to think the network that brought us "the wire" is going to produce a thoughtless and offensive one dimensional view of complex social issues?

Exactly. But in the current PC obsessed and protest obsessed culture everyone just freaks out right away. They haven't even done anything yet, just have a concept and starting development and everyone freaks out. Just wait and see what they come up with and then judge it. If I'm HBO I probably just stay away from teh topic as it's kind of a can't win situation for them, someone will find something to make it out to be offensive. Of course HBO has never backed away from controversy though.
