The other player we likely strongly considered taking was Beal. I doubt we looked that closely at Lillard or Drummond after just drafting Kemba and Biyombo the season prior. And given how Kemba turned out I'm fine that Lillard isn't a Hornet. Also, taking hindsight into account I'd still take MKG over Drummond. But yeah if given the option I would take Beal instead of MKG.

That said the 31st pick is where we really screwed up. We passed on Green, Crowder, Middleton, and Barton to take Jeff Taylor.

Yea Jeff Taylor was a clear zero, he wasn't even any good in college. The guys I followed for draft coverage had Crowder #2 and green at #5 or #6 I believe. I think Barton was actually top 10 also. That pick just didny make sense all those guys were monsters in college with NBA game.

Beal finally had his first good season and hes not any healthier than mkg. And costs double the price without the positional flexibility. Obviously id prefer Beal but it's not as big of a difference as some might think.

I'd take mkg over Drummond for certain. Hes better and way cheaper.

Lillard is good but I slightly prefer kemba when healthy. Again hes much cheaper as well.

Letting biyombo walk instead of offering like 4/$30 was an enormous mistake. That much was obvious at the time

I have no major issues with MKG at 2. In addition to Beal, we were also strongly linked to Barnes and Thomas Robinson. I still don't rate Barnes very highly, although, I'd probably take him over the version of MKG we saw last season.

and who really knows what happens to Jeff Taylor if he doesn't rupture his Achilles then shove his girlfriend. for a brief period, the summer before he got hurt, he was looking like a legit 3D rotation wing.

I was huge on us taking lillard or beal. I wanted us to trade kemba and draft lillard. I was torn with us drafting barnes or mkg tho.

not in NBA competition he didn't. That stretch of his 2nd second before the injury, he was an alright defender, but he was so useless on offense. He was basically PJ before we traded him.

Jeff taylor was nice in college, and had all the tools to become one of the better 3 and D role players in the league. Obviously he didn't pan out, but he looked solid his rookie year. I'd thought we had ourselves a steal early on, but I guess either he didn't put in the work or his ceiling just wasn't very high

I'm honestly not mad at all at the MKG pick. He was right in our range along with Beal, Barnes, and T Rob. I preferred Barnes or MKG at the time because I thought they had the highest ceilings of the group. Honestly I'm still not very impressed by Beal. He's a great shooter but overall he's not all that. Plus you gotta remember that a lot of his production and good looks come from playing with Wall

Yeah Beal and Kemba would be a tiny back court.

Beal isn't small at all tho??? 6'5 with a near 7'0 wingspan. That's why he got picked so high. His length is what gives him that ability to make a lotta his shots over guys. He doesn't utilize it too the best of his ability though

Just thank God we didn't take Thomas Robinson.

Beal is under 6'5 in shoes with a 6'8 wingspan. I wouldn't say he's small for an off-guard, but he doesn't have great size either. Beal is also massively helped by playing with Wall, he would not be nearly the player he is without him. Wall is the perfect backcourt pairing for him.

That said it's still nice to imagine an alternate reality with Beal and Kemba in the backcourt. Their defense as a pair would be below average, but their combined scoring ability would likely offset that. They'd be really fun to watch.

In general non-combo shooting guards have lower value/ceilings than the other 4 positions. Can't run point, by definition a weaker playmaking position, not as effective as SF's switching 1 thru 4, smaller stature or length = shorter peak, etc...

The best ones run point (Harden), switch up (Butler) or both (prime Wade, Ginobili). Otherwise you're overpaying for shooting and might as well stick a more versatile SF at SG instead. I'd take current Beal over current MKG but suspect that'll flip over the next few years.

And ironically they would have received a ton of criticism and abuse for taking Green so early

You have to understand what the franchise was like in 2012. Kemba was a rook, and we were the worst team ever. I mean EVER. He was just coming in, and he was not the speak first leader, more of a lead by example type guy. Boris Diaw, the best player on our team (read that sentence), was so disenfranchised with management and coaching, that he literally got fat, and stopped shooting or trying. Everyone on the team took suit, and it was a culture of not caring, losing, and being terrible. Diaw was just outright released even though he could still play (won a chip with the Spurs), but we had to get rid of the culture he established.

When we got the 2 pick, Davis wasn't an option, so it was either Robinson, Beal, or MKG. Our culture was the worst ever. We needed someone to take responsibility, change the culture from laziness to grinding and working hard. MKG was the perfect pick for us, because we needed someone who would replace Diaw's slovenly ways with early morning workouts and striving to overcome, which is what MKG does. MKG and Kemba were the foundation of what we were building, and for that, he was the perfect pick at the time. Just like Batum is important to us for what he does for Kemba, MKG was very important into molding Kemba and helping him become who he is.

As far as the 31 pick, hindsight is 20/20 on Draymond. If you didn't say it at the time, then you got nothing to say now. But could you imagine Draymond coming here when our team was that terrible? He would not be the same guy as he is in GS, with Curry and Klay and Iggy.
Who I woulda took:
2023: Miller | 2022: Duren | 2021: Bouknight, Jones | 2020: Ball | 2019: PJ | 2018: MPJ | 2017: Monk | 2016: Damian Jones | 2015: Winslow | 2014: Vonleh, Napier | 2013: McLemore | 2012: MKG | 2011: Knight, Kawhi

He was 6'3 during the draft but it's been reported he's grown a few inches since then.

Agreed tijo, just to clarify my position, the specific question by the OP, whose post for some reason I no longer see at the top of the thread was who would you pick in a redraft. His post included a link to a '12 Redraft which he seemed to want people to comment on, and which had Green at #2. I think current Green would be terrific next to Nic, Kemba, Cody, Frank.

if we were to talk about what actually happened in 2012, then I would rather discuss the ethics of a draft where the NBA owned and sold a New Orleans team six weeks prior a draft in which New Orleans miraculously and against significant odds jumped over the worst team in NBA history to score the #1 pick. If that had been a team in NY instead of CHA we'd still hear about it every day. #conspiracytheorist #wewasrobbed #fneworleans #fdavidstern
