Last Training Camp Spot

Post#1 » by BlackieMamba » Thu Aug 10, 2017 2:45 pm

We have 19 players on our roster for training camp. We are allowed to have one more. Who would you like to see? A vet? An undrafted rookie? A young "bust" with potential? A G-League prospect?

I personally would like to see a vet for the last spot. Someone who might stick around in a mentor role, like MWP did last year. Someone on the wing or backcourt.

My Top 3 Vets at this point are:

1. Tony Allen
2. Mike Dunleavy
3. Leandro Barbosa

I would also like to see a vet. Throw the room exception at Tony Allen.

At 35 years old, can Tony Allen defend like before?

He cannot shoot. FT sucks and is not a 3&D guy at all. I would prefer someone else at the last invite and last two open spots at room exception or 2-way player.

Not quite like before, but still good enough to make all defensive 2nd team last year. He would be a huge asset to this team. Strange he hasn't been signed yet. Have a feeling there is more to this story.

I agree it's really strange. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've never heard of him having any character issues. Sure he can't shoot but he's one of the best on ball defenders ever. I'm shocked contenders aren't looking to add him to the backend of their rotation.

By all accounts, TA is a class act. I suspect he has been holding out for more money in a tight market. Also, he had a season ending injury during the playoffs. Could be a little more serious than the team let on. Who knows? But I'm pretty sure teams would line up to sign him at vet min.

we sign metta last year he was 36 years old that time. i think we don't another two way player. what we need is vet that can defend and teach these young guys and tony allen fits that bill.

Disagree. I wanted Artest as well last season, but look at what he did for us: Played 25 games, averaged 6.4 minutes (so about 160 total minutes for the entire season). Scored 2.3 points and .8 rebounds shooting .279 fg% (not 3 point..any shot). And clearly he didn't rub off at all at practices with defense, as we were last defensively.

I used to feel like you do....but grabbing some gnarled old "defensive vet" and sticking him at the far end of the bench does nobody any good. You can bet we're gonna kick the tires on KCP alot this year (someone much younger who prides himself on defense as well) and give Clarkson his share of minutes, even if only to showcase him for future trade. We have a couple young guys who are gonna try for minutes at SG as well.....and don't be surprised if we see Ingram there a little bit, as we test the concept of PG and/or Lebron coming next season.

Allen needs to goto a team that will need him situationally in the playoffs. Not rot at the end of our bench (assuming he even makes the roster). It's a total waste of time for both parties. You can't stick him in for 5 minutes a game every 3rd game, and expect anything out of him.

i totally understand but adding another two way player won't help us either. so.... i'll go with mentoring. but if i were to choose, i'll pick up trob's contract. i know we have a lot PF already but i really do like his presence and approach, seems like a good teammate.

I agree. they should pursue tony allen, i'm sure he would mentor our guys things that we do not see on the stat sheet but truly valuable.

Tony Allen has a lot more left in the tank then Metta did last year. He could actually make a difference on the court unlike Metta. We could very easily carve out minutes for him.

Yeah...he has a little more..I'll give you that. Prob all the more reason not to stick him down in purgatory. The guy needs to find a team where he can contribute in that role he does. Who's he gonna mentor? Clarkson? Clarkson will prob be gone within 365 days. KCP will be gone too.

I like Allen....but I think with Lopez, Brewer, KCP, Deng...we're doing alright on locker-room vets. Most of those guys have a defensive mentality to boot. We're already gonna have to drop about 5 guys...why bring in a guy with no real future for us? Give those minutes to these young guys who so desperately need time out there.

If we were making a legit playoff push....I get it. But we were 2nd worst team in NBA last year (maybe 3rd worst at end of it all). It's just a total waste of what this guy can do, to go sit and be a mentor.

Look...I'll be far from "pissed" if they get him. I just think it's a waste of his talent....and a wasted chance to give a couple of these young guys some time out there.

Like I said....we're already gonna have to drop about 5 guys. I wouldn't bring in anyone if I were the Lakers. Not unless it's some young player who looks like he might have something.

I love the balance of this team. This team is 100 times better than last year's training camp roster. Amazing job by Rob and Magic.

That would have been two seasons ago. He played for the Suns last year. Although, from what little I saw of him last year, he looked the same (which was pretty decent).
