Questionable Call and Control

Post#861 » by Ranma » Wed Aug 9, 2017 4:18 am

Watson gives up a grand slam to Lamb on a 1-2 count as he left the ball up and in when Grandal was calling for it low and away. I don't understand why Roberts gave Morrow the early hook and this is not a matter of hindsight. I questioned it the moment he pulled him.

Great. Now Goldschmidt extends the inning with a double and the Dodgers just walked a batter intentionally to have 2 on with 2 outs against Descalzo before Bellinger beats him to the bag at 1B to end the inning.

We trail 6-3 going into the 8th inning.

Can't win them all

But isn't that 2 blown hold by our new and improved left handed bullpen pitchers?
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

9 outs to go.
6 to get to Kenley (5 if you're Dave Riberts).

Josh Fields up first.

Despite finding his slider, Darvish has struggled to put away batters quickly in this game. His high pitch count is definitely of concern.

Whirling Darvish

Post#872 » by Ranma » Fri Aug 11, 2017 3:49 am

Man, if Darvish could ever harness his control and be locked in from the outset of games, he'd be a monster. The guy has so many great pitches in his arsenal. That curve ball got him out of the 5th inning in striking out the side.

Reminds me of Lincecum in a way....obviously not their body type.

He could be effectively wild

But then there were times where his stuff was nasty enough to get Ks but he was only going 5 with a high pitch count and giving up hits/runs.

Chicken Strip Spoils Hill's Gutty Performance

Post#875 » by Ranma » Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:39 am

After a scary episode where Rich Hill was hit in the Adam's apple by a 92-mph fastball while batting at the plate, Hill was able to collect himself and finish off a gutty performance that saw him pitch 6 innings and giving up 2 earned runs while striking out 9 batters. Dude, deserved the win tonight.

However, Ross Stripling took over and has given up 2 solo homers in 2 innings to surrender the lead, which now has the Dodgers down 4 - 3 going into the bottom of the 8th inning.

Handed a Loss

Post#877 » by Ranma » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:14 am

Brad Hand shuts the door coming in to get the final out of the 8th and neutralizing the offense in the 9th striking out 3 out of the 4 batters he faced. I'm sure A.J. Preller is giddy as a school girl.

man when Rich got hit right in his throat, I thought they will have to bring in an ambulance. for sure I thought his larynx was damaged. good thing there aren't too many rigid connections between structures in that area's anatomy. he got that on his chin or back of his neck, he could have broken some bones with some serious healing time, not that IF he did tear his larynx, would that have been an easy road to recovery.

by the way, we all know Kershaw is being rested with 16 game lead in NLW and 10 game lead on Astros in all baseball... and with the trade cost and reputation, along with his performance he showed against the Mets, Darvish is a lock. and as long as his arm fatigue doesn't become a chronic issue going forward, Alex is probably another lock.

it seems to me, Dave Roberts is auditioning the 4th starter between Hill, Ryu, and Maeda. each guy goes up, and looks like they are pitching the game 7 of the WS. I bet Rich shaking it off and taking the first base, had something to do with that pressure.
ehhhhh f it.

Ross is a quality pitcher, and just like with Nathan Eovaldi or Edwin Jackson, should be able to carve up a decent career somewhere in the majors. even if he doesn't stick in the majors as a starter, he could make a good fortune like our old 2008 2nd round pick, the ace for the Lotte Giants, Josh Lindblom. I still do think his knuckle curve is a high quality pitch. his fastball should work well in KBO or even NPB.

but aside from that, yeah i think with Ross turning 28 at the end of this season, is too old to fit into our scheme of things. we have no room for him as a starter, and he is not a high leverage bullpen help, and a long reliever has no value in the playoffs as excess starters who don't make the rotation are still a superior option over a designated long reliever. we should sell him off while we can this off season to a starter hungry team like the Orioles or Pirates. it probably would do him a favor to really get a chance to show what he can do.

...but like I said, if it doesn't work out for him here...

I think Dustin Nippert over in Seoul, has made 10 mil already and now getting 2.1 mil per year to pitch for the Bears with his new contract. he's been their ace for like 7 years already, won the KBO once, and is a demigod beloved by their fan base.
hey why not? Randy Messenger was getting paid twice that from Hanshin and lasted 7 years there and he too was beloved by fans of Osaka/Koshien region of NPB.
squander around in the majors for 3 seasons or so, getting paid the minimum prorated... then forced retire, OR, get a chance to be a superstar in some other country and make a fortune? I wish kids like Zac Rosscup would take that path. he is a local kid, trying to make it and after a few years of 'cup of coffee' visits to the majors, he is now traded over to the Rockies. a lefty with a 92 mph fastball with slightly below average spin rate, and his main weapon is a slider. breaking ball pitcher with a slightly average fastball... in mile high. I really wish at age 29, this isn't the end of him but I know he would succeed in overseas. his lack of third pitch may become a problem, but his breaking ball will be a top flight pitch in Korea, and his fastball will be one of the best in that league.
ehhhhh f it.
