I still don't get why he does that massive side-step thing. If anything it makes the shot harder when he's so off-balance. He has the length and high release to get his shot off over anyone as is.

That's a Spanoulis move
Anyway, Montenegro played a really good competitive game and we were lucky to win this. Their bigs killed us, on the other hand we scored a lot in transition. Lineups are still in flux. Let's see how we fare tomorrow against Serbia.

There are plenty of players(in NBA) that have the length or the defensive reflexes to put a hand on the face of Giannis on a usual jumpshot.
Better to get used to that unguardable stepback J just to get any doubt out of his mind for ever imo.
On the buzzer beater in NY last season he was guarded extremely well and without his enormous stepback he wound't have made it.
It will be a massive help on the rare situations his opponent is expecting a jumpshot from him.
Whatever gives him extra confidense on his shot is always a plus.

Re: The Greek National Team thread
The interesting Line up from Coach Missas was Giannis at the 5
The most trash line-up I have ever seen in Greek NT was this one from Missas ... Agravanis at the 5 and Thanasis at the 4. Brain drained. Montenegro went Big Ball and destroyed us inside the paint, either a layup or FTs. He insisted with this **** and from up 8 went to a 1point game...at the 4th quarter ... Can't do worse

Re: The Greek National Team thread
Was switching on and off the match. Giannis was great although some of his perimeter shots and FTs missed horribly. Pappas was chucking but he was super efficient at this. Kalathes was trash. PRintezis plays in Olympiakos mode, where he's asked to score every other possesion. Sloukas was good, as same Papanikolaou. We can't shoot. Agravanis is a spazz who shouldn't play at all. Papagiannis and Bogris are so slow they a terrible liabilities on D and rebounds. Giannis should see much time at C, although the space isn't ideal even then due to our general lack of shooting. We 've had a lot of plays where 1 guy was posting up, our C was clogging the lane and another guy was attempting a cut. Horrible stuff, scheme wise.

No15 at Montenegro's bench reacts to Jaws.

Every time Giannis chases down opponents ... Our guard should run to the weak side corner 3 to grab the blocked ball

That was Vucevic. Being an NBA player gives you hindsight.

As someone else said, he copied that move from Spanoulis. Spanoulis uses it effectively, because he's 6-4 and with true zone defense in Europe, he always has guys 6-8 and over guarding him. Thus, it's a smart move to have for a guy like Spanoulis.
It's basically a wasted movement for someone like Giannis. He's 6-11 with a 7-3 wingspan, and a good leap. There is no reason for him to be doing moves like that. Someone Spanoulis' size needs to be shifty and elusive, but someone Giannis' size needs to just go right through the defender.
It's just a waste of movement for Giannis.

Like greekbuck said, against the vastly better and more physically talented NBA competition it's good to have that stuff. As we saw, Spanoulis' game died when he took his talents to the big boy league. While it looks unnecessary for Giannis now it's a nice weapon for the NBA going forward.

Maybe it also gives him some kind of rythme.
Harden does it too plenty of times.
Lebron likes to dribble it under the legs once before his shot.

Guessing Giannis hasn't had a 7'3 wingspan since he was 6'9. Dude pulls the rim down a little on dunks and he's touching the floor.

With the rules and the reffing, defense is much worse in the NBA.

His wingspan is 7-3. ESPN did a big story on him, and measured him. He was 6-11 in shoes with a 7-3 wingspan. This was after he was totally done growing. Claims his wingspan is bigger than that are not true, as ESPN very carefully got all his measurements for their story.

Also worth remembering that Spanoulis was booted from the national team after embarrassing himself trying to hero ball. Calathes>>>>>
