SportsGuy8 wrote:Bob8 wrote:SportsGuy8 wrote:This is exactly why we can't have nice things (in this case Doncic threads).
I'm a big Doncic "homer" and even I admit that hyperbole is ridiculous on BOTH sides of the argument. As I said before, it mostly comes down to the core FIBA vs. NBA (and Euroleague vs. NBA) debate that's been going on on these boards for more than a DECADE (seriously). And Doncic, due to his characteristics (extremely skilled but athletically somewhat questionable player), brings that debate to front like nothing else. Americans tend to underrate FIBA and European basketball, while Europeans tend to underrate NBA and think it's just some stupid circus show with the basis of making monies ...
It's never going to end ...
In theory you're right. But in this case you're not. If Americans are right Dragic should dominate in Eurobasket against unathletic scrubs. But if he can't, because he can't penetrate and finish at the rim like in Nba, because Fiba rules make this very difficult, how the hell can the same Americans expect that from 18 years old kid in Euroleague? I'm pretty sure Doncic will score, like Dragic, more easily in Nba. And believe me if Porter was from Europe, he would have looked totally different player and vice versa Doncic would have looked totally different (much better) in high school.
I've mentioned several times before how I think penetrating is going to be easier for Doncic in the NBA, opening up his game even further. I also agree about even the best 18-year-old American prospects would most likely struggle to even see minutes for European powerhouses like Real Madrid ...
But that still doesn't mean you aren't using a hyperbole in your arguments a whole lot ...
Really? I never said he will for sure be great player in Nba. But I said no 17-18 years kid from Europe played like him ever. I never said he's better player than Dragic, but I said he's better rebounder, assistant and shooter than Dragic. We will have around 10 preparations games and Eurobasket to make comparison . And I know Dragic well enough to know he will do his maximum in Eurobasket. He always gives his max. and that's maybe the most important reason he succeeded in Nba. But some persons here watched preparations games and suddenly Eurobasket is not important anymore. How is not important for 18 years kid to play against the best players from Europe? Other prospects mostly play U18 and U20 games. And I heard many times how important are this games.
About competitions where American prospects are scoring 50+ points and dunking everything. Doncic scored 50+ in that kind of school competition when he was 16. Drazen scored 112 points in national league against youth team of Olimpija, because they failed to register players on time. About Doncic's athleticism, he's not the most athletic man in the world, but he's not that bad either and he'll be very strong.
In one side we have many arguments that indicate he can be very good player in Nba. On the other side there's no arguments whatsoever to indicate he won't be. It's enough to say he's game won't translate because he's unathletic.
You're political correct and put the both sides in the same boat. Maybe it's time that Europe gets someone like Trump and stop with this nonsense how we all are the same.
But there's one fact. This conversation it's not going anywhere. Even if Doncic will have great Eurobasket, what's a big if, this won't count. And because of that attitude there's no reason whatsoever to continue with that debate. See you in 5 years time.

I agree that some arguments are ridiculous, like the ones claiming that he's not a top5 pick because he never went against other top athletes, disregarding the fact that basically everyone else from his draft class only played vs. high-schoolers a few levels below them (and Doncic actually played against Westbrook
).
However, with that said, it's still a valid argument to be doubtful about Doncic because of his athleticism (or lack thereof), even though I don't personally agree with it. Some of the arguments the other side is making aren't nearly as far-fetched are you're making them out to be.

Hezonja is basically European Dion Waiters. They are different types of players, but both very vastly overrated by the scouts who disregarded very important traits they both have in common: bad personality, attitude and low basketball IQ. Doncic is the complete opposite in that regard.

so, explain this: JASIKEVICUS - legendary bball iq, legendary clutch shooting, scoring in bunches, phenomenal passer, best in the world in 2000 supposetly - ALL THIS GREAT TRAITS, - - ----- how come he didnt make it in the NBA? i dont know man - if those 5 great abilities and only one negative (average athlete) - how come it didnt work in the nba. DOESNT THE MATH SHOW THE CLEAR RESULT? 5+ is better then 1-? but how? isnt it that simple?

this second i dont understand?
and at last: to say doncic is a better shooter and passer then dragic is again kiiiinda going into unicorn, fairytale mode
and to average 6 assist per game in the nba is also not the easiest thing to do for 82 games, unless you are a doncic uberfan, and expect no other then 9 assist per game easy
as mine sometimes, your vision is truly also skewed to say the least

this second i dont understand?help me? so you want a trump (narcassist, guy who thinks he is always right, an a.... of a human beeing) to tell people in europe that only one way is right, good, ok?
that didnt help your case of beeing factual or objective about this doncic thing neither. i cant be factual, you cant be, so, whats the point? lets have some fun, and dont take every step doncic takes or doesnt take in a game against israel or hungary to serious, because it isnt.
and at last: to say doncic is a better shooter and passer then dragic is again kiiiinda going into unicorn, fairytale modesooo, 40% in 30 + nba minutes on nba 3pts is worse then doncics shooting? hmm, shure?

Jasikevicus? I don't see any similarity with Doncic, except they both know how to play basketball.
Europe has big problems with political correctness. That's the fact. Just look how we handled problem with migration. USA, China, Russia...no one is taking us serious. We're just polite and correct.
I offered you Eurobasket to see who is better in this areas at this moment, but you're too scared to take it.

His game is simply totally suited for today's NBA, not so much for FIBA where it's harder to penetrate.

So who are/were all those better NBA guards from Europe? I am seriously asking because I cant recall. And remember, we are talking about Euro NBA guards, not overall.

Orrrrrrrr you can have that conversation in a PM since the thread is about Doncic and not what Euro guards are better than Dragic.
I usually don't care of a topic gets a little off track for a few post but this is going to head in an entirely different direction because for some reason when it comes to this kid (who I got PMs and post request about restarting a thread for him) folks can't seem to stay on track, or be civil, or objective, or reasonable, or any of the regular day to day simple things that are asked from poster in every other thread. For some reason that can't seem to consistently happen here. Yet there's all this shock and everyone never understands why it gets shut down.
Doncic. Keep it on Doncic. Anything else put it in a PM.

It's important for this debate that everyone understands that the game is quite different. We'll see what happens to Doncic, but I actually think he's also going to be a better NBA player than he is a FIBA player, while many others believe the opposite ... Maybe they're correct, we'll see, but he isn't going to be the same player in the NBA.

Looks very active today on defense, lots of steal9, deflections, solid on three point shooters. Only seen 2nd half.
