2016 second-round pick Isaia Cordinier will not be coming to the United States to continue his basketball career in 2017-18. Cordinier and his agent had made some noise about wanting to join the Erie Bayhawks, the Hawks’ G League affiliate, but Atlanta GM Travis Schlenk has reportedly decided not to offer him that opportunity.

Cordinier is a free agent after playing last season in France for Antibes and it remains to be seen which European team picks him up. To this point, he has spent his entire five-year professional career in France.

Cordinier has joined the Hawks’ Summer League team each of the last two years, but failed to impress in his initial NBA appearances in Las Vegas. Still just 20 years old, it’s possible that he’ll take the necessary steps forward to realize his goal of making the NBA, but at this point it seems rather unlikely that Cordinier will have an impact in the United States anytime soon.

Gotta be a little disappointing for the kid. IIRC, he'd mentioned that he was hoping to come over this season to the G-League.

Either way, it make sense to keep him overseas on someone else's dime to get stronger/better for another season or two.

Any one know how coming to the G-League exclusively affects 2nd round draftees?
Does the clock start on them immediately?
Can they be signed to 2-way contracts?

THe way I understand it, the only clock that starts is their GLeague clock, not their NBA clock. Hawks will still own his rights. Signing a 2 way deal limits other teams from signing him from the GL.. If he plays a certain number of NBA game while on the 2 -way contract he gets more money.

NBA Draft Rights Held: Southeast Division

Many clubs around the NBA currently hold the rights to international players who have remained overseas for their entire professional careers and are no longer viewed as top prospects. Those players may never come stateside, but there’s often no reason for NBA teams to renounce their rights — those rights can sometimes be used as placeholders in trades.

Here’s a breakdown of the draft rights held by Southeast teams:

Dorsey finds himself in a position where he has to prove himself, but this time alongside the players with whom he will be competing against for minutes. John Collins took Summer League as an opportunity to show that he is ready to ball with the big boys and he has certainly earned his spot in Coach Bud’s rotation.

Dorsey’s competition [for a roster spot]? Kent Bazemore, DeAndre’ Bembry, Nicolas Brussino, Marco Belinelli, and Quinn Cook. All those listed have NBA experience and will be equally as motivated to compete for the starting, backup, and even third string role if you will.

Dorsey will have to do his hardest work in the gym. Practice will be the place where he will need to show remind Coach Bud why he was drafted and why he deserves his shot in the NBA.

I expect Dorsey to spend some time in the G-League and demonstrate his ability there before he can challenge the likes of Brussino and Cook for time on the court.

Wish the NBA would fix it so that the entire roster was the property of their NBA team like the baseball majors do it.
Maybe, some day they will fix this when all NBA teams have their very own G-league team.

1. I find it unacceptable that Bembry didn't unleash the 'fro for media day
2. Are Prince and Collins really almost the same height?
3. Interesting that neither Dorsey or Dennis were included in this grouping for photos

Bembry without the fro is just wrong. And it highlights his general smallishness.

Prince is just a big guy. The fro used to make Bembry look close to Prince's height but it was never close. and Prince is big too. The guy has SF size unrivaled by most of the league. If he can defend the position watch out.

As Hawks rebuild, Budenholzer shows he will rely on young players

Anyone worried that the coach would shun his younger players in favor of short-term veterans shouldn’t be worried any longer. Three rookies have been, at one time or another, part of Budenholzer’s rotation: John Collins, Tyler Cavanaugh and Josh Magette. Those three players and Tyler Dorsey all rank among the top 50 in minutes played by NBA rookies; only Boston and Sacramento have more players on the list, with five each.

Collins, a first-round draft pick, was expected to play a major role but Cavanaugh and Maggette are G-League imports...

Collins ranks 12th in minutes per game (22.9) among NBA rookies. He’d probably have more minutes if not for foul trouble: Collins has committed 5.8 fouls per 36 minutes, the most among all rookies who have played at least 250 minutes. Collins has been one of the most productive rookies in the league, with Budenholzer playing him mostly at center to take advantage of his prowess as a pick-and-roll rim runner.

Magette and Cavanaugh are likely to be sent back to Erie soon. But Budenholzer has been willing to find out what those three players can offer in major roles even when he could have called on vets instead.

I have no major issues with what Bud is doing this year. Cavanaugh is looking like a great find and honestly i'd keep him as the primary backup PF. I still think Dorsey will be a good shooter off the bench once he gets comfortable on D.

They didn't mention Taylor but he's effectively a rookie and if healthy would be our primary backup PG and doing well.

I edited his name out in an effort to be concise.

Budenholzer also has relied on Isaiah Taylor, who played 52 minutes last season for the Rockets. Taylor was a street free agent (and quasi-rookie) when the Hawks signed him. It’s not just that Budenholzer has played those youngsters, it’s that he’s done so even when he had viable veteran options.

The Hawks signed Taylor on the eve of the regular season and it wasn’t long before he checked in a game. Initially it seemed Taylor would be an emergency stopgap while Dennis Schroder recovered from an ankle injury but soon he was taking some of Malcolm Delaney’s minutes, and Budenholzer was telling Taylor to be more aggressive offensively.

The Hawks eventually sent him Magette to Erie once Taylor established himself but brought Magette back last week after Taylor went to the injured list.
