Re: Eurobasket 2017

Post#2 » by UcanUwill » Wed Aug 30, 2017 9:21 am

Well... that took a lot of code. If you know final 12 men roster of the team that is not in OP, please tell, I will add it later.

First of all, I want to say that I know it is basically an OT thread, but its a major Basketball tournament, and I think it belongs on general board. So first of all, please, please, do not merge or transfer this thread to international board, since its like 3 person forum and its basically a death sentence for any thread. Thank you. We had great fun on general board back in 2015, it was a very popular thread, it got a bit nasty, since Euro fans are very attached to their nations and teams, but thats just a nature of the beast.

This Eurobasket is known for its lack of star power. Basically all the nations lack their superstars. Only Spain and Latvia have their tier A stars I think (also Slovenia), but even those teams are missing key players.
Spain looks like a clear favorite.
Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia and France looks like the most serious medal contenders.
Slovenia and Latvia are biggest dark horses.
*Just my opinion

What is there to see in this Eurobasket?

Luka Doncic (Slovenia)
Kristaps Porzingis (Latvia)
Bogdan Bogdanovic & Boban Marjanovic (Serbia)
Sario Saric (Croatia)
Gasol brothers still kicking strong (spain)

Israel is stupid. Should have brought in Blatt instead of Mekel/Ohayon. Better than both of them tbh.

Yes, Blatt is good. I haven't seen Mekel at all ina long time, but its amazing to me that he managed to get NBA offer once. He could not even dribble with his off hand..

Mekel is a ball hog without any sort of speed, dribble or shot. Blatt is just better on offense, perhaps a bit worse on defense.

Isreal looks like a weak team compared to the others here.

Kinda lost interest when Jokic and Giannis opted out
I guess I'm still a little curious about Latvia with KP, Bertans and Timma

Yeah, Jokic, Giannis, Gobert and Teodosic are biggest loses this year. Makes the whole thing far less exciting. But we still hvae Slovenia with Doncic and Latvia with Porzingis to look forward to.

You get all the speed you need with Bar Timor. Kind of pointless to have both Blatt and Timor in the same roster, and Timor is the more accomplished and experienced player.

Serbia is playing without Teodosic, Jokic, Bjelica, Raduljica, Kalinic, Nedovic, Markovic,...
I was excited to watch this tournament but after so much injuries, not anymore.

what kind of organization is this? one group is in finland, another is in israel. Do they even know where these countries are located and how far from each other? to give the sense of an event, it would be better to be held in one country or lets say in two neighbour countries. anyway apart from that, as a turkish, this is by far the worst squad of ours i have ever seen in a championship.

This is exactly what I'm looking forward to also. Doncic for obvious reasons, but I'm also very curious how Porzingis is going to do as a clear no.1 option. He should be a dominant FIBA player, Nowitzki-lite ... in THEORY. :)

P.s.: I actually thought Giannis's going to disappoint a bit, but it's such a shame Jokic isn't there. :(

I feel like Spain is going to coast all the way to the finals. I don't know about the matchups but i feel like Spain/France will face them in the finals.

Really disappointed about my country's national team (Greece). Besides Giannis i feel like our Centers are way too slow to keep up and shooting is a major issue. Unfortunately there are way too many egos and not a clear cut leader. I feel like this would be a good opportunity for us to incorporate some youngsters like Mitoglou who was playing for Wake Forest last season and got a contract to the Euroleague but he got cut for players that have some experience from the National Team (to be honest i feel like he is a lot better than Agravanis).

Either way the OP has already mentioned the lack of star power in this tournament. I feel like Italy could be a dark horse if they still had Gallinari but i will go with Latvia as the major surprise of the tournament (feel like they can make it to the final 4)

Will be interesting to see Markanen too who will be playing with the Finland national team I believe this could be a good test for him against some of the top European competition.

You are missing Hungary and Montenegro, but hey who cares.

It is hard to find all final lineups, so few teams are still missing, I am planning on adding them all. If you can post it here, I will surely add it in no time.
