Recall when we blew out the Twolves last year in Philly? I remember that feeling vividly. It was such an odd feeling, considering we've been the team getting blown out 99% of the time the last several years. With Fultz and Redick standing on the perimeter, and transition pushers in Ben and Dario, I fully expect the Sixers to be a team that can go on very good runs (10-15 point swings) in just a few minutes. How many times did we watch the Sixers get a lead in the first half but lose that lead in the 3rd and 4th quarters. As fans, we were groomed to think of ways the Sixers would blow it in the 4th quarter. When it came to the 4th quarter, we lacked play makers and shot takers to keep the lead. How many agonizing times did we see Gerald chuck up a shot with a second left? Or TJ pass up a wide open 3 pointer? Or Embiid lose the handle or throw it away?
Embiid was phenomenal last year, but we can't expect him to carry us late in games like he did last year (I expect less turnovers in crunch time). There was zero ball movement then, and defenses would just collapse on Joel. It'll be interesting to see how Brett Brown coaches this team in crucial situations, especially trying to share duties between Simmons and Fultz. I'm really hoping Brown can keep this team under control in this area, as well as give our guys defined roles during crunch time. This will be the difference between us winning 35 games and 45 games (assuming Embiid is healthy).
Defined roles:
-JJ and Roco moving without the ball, running off screens.
-Embiid down low, getting him the ball near the rim, or using him on the elbow for pick and roll.
-Simmons running the pick and roll, attacking the rim, finding guys on the perimeter or a rolling Embiid, getting to the FT line.
-Where does that leave Fultz? He's too good to just leave on the perimeter.
How do you see the roles of Simmons and Fultz during crunch time? I see ISO situations going to Embiid and Fultz. I keep going back and forth with who should have the rock. Do you give it to Simmons, a playmaker, or Fultz, who has a better chance at breaking down his man with his handle and making the jump shot? Would it be better to have Simmons play off ball in these situations and let him fight for offensive rebounds?
Go Sixers! Less than one month til training camp guys.
I think those sorts of questions will have to be answered over the course of the season IMO. There's so many new pieces that it is tough to even predict the lineup yet.
Im still under the impression that Simmons will be playing at PF but there is still a sentiment that he will be our starting PG, with Saric at 4.
A lineup with a Fultz/Redick back court and a Simmons/Fultz back court is two pretty different situations with different pros and cons.
I would actually want to see both of them experimented with though in preseason. It would be interesting to see if there was any advantage to be gained from it, although I'm not sure what Brett Brown has in plan for the rotation yet.
That is why this is such a big year for BB for me. He actually has to coach now and not just hype the future and give pats on the back. He has the tools now
