Now that the Kyrie-IT trade is officially official, let's see if that was the domino that needed to be cleared for a Melo deal (or any other trade). There have been faint rumors since July that the Nets would be a partner in some deal in order to help fill the 4 spot. Who knows...

I clearly have too much time on my hands

I discovered that- Sullinger if signed would be at least the sixth Net who at some point had surgery at HSS

LeVert - foot surgery - March 2016
DMC - arthroscopic knee surgery Jan 2016
Lin - his March 2013 meniscus surgery
Sullinger - foot surgery - Oct 2016
Crabbe - similar issue to Sullinger - stress reaction of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot - May 2017
RHJ - ankle surgery - Dec 2015. He's the only one who was a Net at the time of his HSS surgery

Sean Kilpatrick - meniscus knee - Aug 2014. Mozgov. (knee) and Joe Harris (foot) had surgeries while with Cavs. Dinwiddie (left ACL tear) in last year of college. All of these not at HSS

Spencer Hawes anyone? Big body, can shoot for a 5. Give him 15 minutes a night while Allen adjusts, moves to 3rd string when Allen is ready. Thoughts?

I'm kinda interested in throwing Allen in the deep end and seeing him get 24 minutes a game but Hawes could be a serviceable stopgap. Decent passer for a big man, career 35% 3pt shooter, a lumbering runner. Spencer used to give Lin hair recommendations on the Hornets. But can the Nets handle two Spencers?!

My PT spread would be:
Early season
Mozgov - 20mpg
Hawes - 14mpg
Allen - 14mpg

End of season
Mozgov - 20mpg
Allen - 20mpg
Hawes - 8mpg

End of next season
Allen - 25mpg
Mozgov - 15mpg
3rd string - 8mpg

Let the kid come along gradually, no need to rush or push too hard.

It's really hard to square how much they shot the 3 last year with how much they've upgrade the roster in that area.

I think he would be a good fit. A career 35% three point shooter who is a good passer for a 7 footer. I could actually see him playing with Allen for like 5 minutes a game.

Lopez (34%) 387
SKil (34%) 308
Bogs (35%) 277

...and the replacements:
Crabbe (44%) 302
Russell (35%) 384
Carroll (34%) 320 (was 39% prior 2 years)
Lin (37%) 155 (was on pace for 350+)

Massive upgrades on offense. But downgrades on defense. How the newcomers play defensively will be critical in determining how much the Nets can improve on last year's record. If they buy in and commit, watch out.

There is no way we have gotten worst defensively. We have retained everyone who had a presence on the defensive end. On top of that, our rookies would be relegated back to bench roles. Bring on those 3rd quarters.

Spencer Hawes for the vet minimum isnt a bad idea. Gives the team another stretch big body to throw at teams for a different look assuming Mozgov cant stretch his range, Allen isnt ready, and Booker/Acy is too grossly undersized.

It's nice big man padding. He's slow as molasses but he's not afraid to bang and mix it up. Good passer for a big too. If he flops or Allen improves faster than expected or Booker can play passable C, then bench/cut/trade him.

Start of Season depth chart
C - Mozgov, Booker, Acy, Hawes, Allen (DLeague)
PF- Carroll, RHJ (until he improves his outside shot), Booker (him or Carroll needs to get traded ASAP)
SF- Crabbe, Levert, Carroll
SG- DLo, Levert, SKil, Whitehead (i'd send him to DLeague, personally, no time. Also try to fluff SKil's trade value)
PG- Lin, Dimwiddie, DLo (he'll find some mins here to see if he can move back fulltime)

Trades at deadline ideally
Booker + SKil and/or Acy/Hawes for a bleh contract + Lotto prot 1st Rounder
or
Carroll + SKil and/or Acy/Hawes for expiring + Lotto prot 1st (classic pump and dump)
or
Lin + SKil and/or Acy/Hawes for expiring + top 10 prot 1st (Lin balling out and DLo has risen, might as well cash out on Lin)

End of Season Depth Chart
C- Mozgov, Allen (him getting 20-24 mins), Acy/Hawes (whichever is left)
PF- RHJ, Booker/Carroll (1 of whom traded not both)
SF- Crabbe, Levert
SG- DLo, Levert, Whitehead
PG- Lin, DImwiddie, DLo

or if Lin is traded

C- Mozgov, Allen, Acy/Hawes
PF- RHJ, Booker/Carroll
SF- Crabbe, Carroll (if not traded)/??? (prolly one of the incoming expirings)
SG- Levert, Whitehead
PG- DLo, Dimwiddie

Tor 1st, LAL/Sacto 2nd + 1-2 1sts for trading any combo of Booker/Carroll/Lin

This sets up the team REALLY well in future assets with good young up coming players at all positions getting major mins. Mozgov shouldnt be moved til the year after at earliest when his value goes up as an expiring and maybe he gets his old self back making him even more attractive as a 1 year stopgap. One of Booker/Carroll NEEDS to be moved, there's just no PT for them both, the Booker at C experiment needs to go at full bore early on. Lin may or may not be moved depending on DLo's PG development and whether this team is making a dark horse shot at sneaking into the POs in which case i wouldnt be surprised he's kept unless so team is willing to drastically overpay.

That's more than enough depth to withstand a 82 game campaign with room for improvement during the season and deadline.

Costs less, better passer, bangs bodies. Hawes is less agile (not that Hamilton was evn an average defender) and not quite as good from 3, but at the minimum for a max of 15 minutes a night, why not?

It makes a lot of sense unless Marks is dead set on getting a small ball 5. We only have one legit 5 on the roster right now, while we do have plenty of capable 4s.

His biggest flaw is he tries to do too much, one play he thinks he is Nash, the other Hakeem. Pretty good passer for a center

Sully's got more upside tho
