Is Cameron Payne a Lost Cause?

Just curious to how Thunder fans saw him in Oklahoma?

He's just not an NBA player. As a rookie he looked ok at times but I think it was mainly due to some early confidence. He's not really good at anything.

He always stunk. Despite fans on this board clamoring for him all year to play more when he was rookie, including in the playoffs until he finally got a chance and obviously didn't belong on the court. Yes he was good at times as a rookie. Those times were against backups, and against bad teams. Against good teams, it was clear to anyone with a decent eye for bball that he couldnt hang vs good teams or vs good players (like the bulls are saying.....never seen a team say that about a current player but it's true). He was too weak, sloppy, and his handle wasn't nearly tight enough to play the finess game he attempted to pull off. He was a joke from day 1.

He was decent and had a solid feel for the game pre-injury. Once he hurt his foot he stopped basically became a statue on the court, avoiding the ball for long stretches and NEVER attacking the paint. Anybody saying he sucked from day 1 is an idiot, he had some moments where he looked like a future starter. At this point he's damaged goods though, the foot injury ended any chance of becoming an NBA player.

He might come back and be an ok backup. If he heals, gets on right team and develops better moves, shot, defense. Not likely but not impossible. The competition for backup isn't that great.

Somebody in Chicago really wants Paxson / Forman out. The comment was probably more about that. We don't know if that person is sharp or a dolt also. He was either hired or retained by Forman, so... he is suspect. I have a guess who might have said it but it isn't based on any proof so I won't say. Unless he loses his job sometime in near future.

If Payne can play like he did at 21 or better at 23 or 24, he'll hang in at least awhile or bounce out then back in somewhere. He is real cheap and there is no reason for Bulls to hurry. If he can't play, he helps the tank.

I think those who didn't see how scared he looked from day 1 were just blinded by their cam payne avatars. He didn't belong vs good teams from the start. Granted he was only a rookie (but a lotto pick), but the flashes of potential were greatly exaggerated. He occasionally hit an open 3 or a step back, was incredibly weak, sloppy, and danced alot.

He did manage 17/7 against the Spurs and 10/3/3 vs Dallas.

Wonder who the spurs rolled out there....2 games outta 20 isn't great. I think that's why we differ so much on a guy like Roberson, who stats say is good and can actually help during the grind of an 82 game regular season, but it's clear in the playoffs (the only thing that should ever matter when you have 1 or 2 or 3 generational talents on your team), it's clear he either can't play the part physically (payne) or from a game standpoint (Roberson, going unguarded, allowing 30 plus a night to stars regardless, and getting hack a robersoned is not ideal).

I'm not sure why you bring up Roberson when he was the 2nd best player on the team this year and played amazingly well the prior year but sure. Payne was for half a season a good backup PG.
