It is the tail-end of the offseason
Also, we are having discussions on a Brooklyn-based team forum. Hip-hop and rap comes with that territory

Re: 2017 Nets Offseason Thread III
Hip hop was trending the way of Migos and Future for years, once southern rap became the dominant mainstream sound in the late 00s especially. its not really shocking to hear someone Lonzo's age say this stuff. It's a dumb take obviously. If someone is a fan of guys like J Cole then I can easily see them listening to Nas' discography and enjoying it.
I tend not to get all crazy about things younger folks say, same way people used to trash the music in the late 90s/early 00s is what is being said now. everyone thinks that their generation is better, smarter, has better taste in music, morals, etc. Sometimes in order to really appreciate greatness, you have to be there to see it unfold in real time.
Like one time in a barber shop a few months back some dudes were really having an argument about Lebron James being better than Michael Jordan. One dude was young and clearly never saw Michael play in real time action outside of maybe youtube highlights, his take had the older dude heated and going off about young kids not knowing anything....i mean what do you expect? If someone asked me who would I take on my team, Oscar Robertson or Michael Jordan I'm obviously going with the guy I've seen play live. It's not even worth debating stuff like that. Like Lebron is the greatest player of his generation and I think the best player in the sport since Kobe Bryant (who was the best player since Michael Jordan). But having seen Michael play from 1991 til the end, there is no way in hell I can put Lebron, who has had some great performances, in Michael's category as a player and a competitor. Jordan used to destroy people out there and was athletically/skill/talent wise on another level than anyone else up until around the point when Allen Iverson, Grant Hill, and Penny Hardaway entered the league. Those dudes had no fear of Jordan and brought the heat to him every time they played. I could probably sit here and argue that Hill and Hardaway are two of the greatest players I've ever seen play as well, but to someone who never watched them play, they'd think I was nuts.
See how I brought us back to basketball?

2017 Nets Offseason Thread III
The perception of this kid is kind of the issue. He's going to be disliked for how he carries himself because I highly doubt any other rookie would've responded like that.
Kind of embarrassing when Nas' manager and Future's mentor, TI another hip hop icon calls you out like that. Kid or not, I'd never make a hot take and I haven't established I'm good enough in my own profession to call someone's body of work irrelevant.

Its all because of his dad. People are twisting his words trying to make him Lavar 2.0. I feel sorry for the kid because his dad will always have a negative impact on his career.

I get your point but his dad didn't say it he did. He deserves all the backlash for disrespecting a legend.

His dad didn't say it, though. I think the fact his dad has created a side WWE-ish persona to sell their brand has created a sense of false entitlement.
I like what LaVar is doing with giving his family a business brand but there's no reason to act so arrogantly amongst your own people.

You're both missing my point. I know Lavar didn't say it, but the media wants to make it seem like Lonzo is a big mouthed hot head just like his father because that's the way more interesting story. Lonzo is boring. If they can start the narrative that He's going to be a Lavar level **** talker, then they have their easy storylines. They want to paint the picture where Lonzo is Lavar 2.0.
The fact that you guys have already both 100% bought into the idea that He's entitled and trying to intentionally disrespect people kinda helps my point too.

Cavs are buying and accumulating high level talent for a playoff run. They don't have any ulterior motive to trade that pick (like shed salary) and they also prefer Quality > Quantity. They're not looking to trade the pick for rotation players

You mean like, the best perimeter player? Or you think he's better than Shaq and Duncan?

Jordan, Kobe, Lebron
You can make an argument for Duncan easily. Bryant was a beast though and more skilled overall.

if it wasn't for his dad being polarizing, no one would have given two hoots about Lonzo saying this. Ror is right imo.
If Lonzo ever gets caught speeding or is shown out in a club or something, the media will react like vultures. I don't have any beef with the kid. I think his dad has the right idea deep down, but his execution/timing/media savy is horrible, he comes across as a blowhard. I also think he's an idiot after the statement about "those slow white kids" being the reason UCLA got knocked out of the NCAAs when Lonzo was getting his lunch eaten and on top of the fact that his wife is white which makes him look like a bigot. All of that stuff is either going to help boost Lonzo's profile if he succeeds and keeps his nose clean, or it will help capitulate his downfall harder if Lonzo doesn't play well over the next 2 years or somehow lands himself into some controversy. And the controversy could be something trivial but the media will amplify it. Look at how Odell Beckham Jr. is treated. The guy is for all purposes a model citizen, but because he is emotional and flamboyant the media turns everything that happens with him into a 1st degree crime. This is the bad side to being polarizing...your own opinion can be taken and used a ammunition against you. I think the outrage is silly. he's a dumb ass kid who probably never listens to anything that wasn't made before 2010

The Cavs better trade that pick now because its value will be moot if they wait til February. We aren't going to yield a #1 for them.

Top dog of their generation? In my opinion, the only thing Kobe was ever top dog of is the all time over-rated list. He was a great player, but he's a stretch as the best player of his generation, let alone belonging in the conversation of best players all time.

Outside of Tim Duncan, who in his generation starting with the class of 1994 and ending with the class of 2004 is better than Kobe Bryant?
I'm not even going to bring up things like win shares, career PER or any other of his numerous accolades. If you're going to say right off the bat that the 3rd leading scoring in NBA history isn't in the conversation of best players of all time, you're going to immediately paint yourself into a corner.
