Player of the day: Enes Kanter

Per 36 minute averages last year were 24.3 points and 11.3 rebounds. There are only 4 bigs in the entire NBA that average 20 points and 10 rebounds and the only reason Kanter isn't part of that elite group is because Donovan only gives him 21 minutes per game. There are only a handful of bigs each season that are talented enough to accomplish that and Kanter is an elite scorer and rebounder, specifically on the offensive boards where he is arguably the best in the NBA. Those offensive rebounds are like gold because they are like steals since they give the team an extra possession and most of the time he scores on putbacks when he gets them. Kanter more than makes up for any defensive deficiencies he has in pick and rolls (the only area where he really struggles defensively) with his scoring and rebounding and he should be starting and getting around 34 minutes per game which would easily allow him to get his 20/10 average. If OKC is going to have any chance whatsoever against the elite teams like the Warriors and Rockets he is going to need to start and play big minutes because the starting point at competing with them is scoring 115 points and that's just not going to happen without him since he's their 2nd best offensive player (yes even now with Paul George...Kanter averages more points per minute than George does). Kanter plays fabulously alongside Adams (as they showed in the playoffs two years ago) and actually will open up more scoring opportunites for him since teams will have to double team him many times and he's great in pick and rolls with Westbrook. Start him and continue to work with him defensively and watch him continue to get better and better.

Just remember that Kanter is so good that Utah traded him for Kendrick Perkins and then bought out Perkins. Utah made it clear that Kanter is worth less than an empty roster spot. Utah was 19-10 after dumping Kanter in '14-'15. They were 19-34 with him. Kanter could put up 30 points and 20 rebounds and he would still be costing his team the scoreboard every minute he was on the court. I know the scoreboard doesn't matter to some people and to those people Kanter is very entertaining. Those who care about winning do not want Kanter on their team's roster.

Starting Kanter is a terrible idea 95% of the time. We're really exiting the era of two true big men on the floor at the same time.

As if dumb ol' Donovan is what's holding back Kanter's game. Never mind the fact that Kanter puts up his stats primarily against bench big men and that he's been a defensive sieve his whole career. He's a great bench C but lets not act like the only thing separating him from the ASG is Billy's incompetence.

How bout some real questions for this thread?

1. Can Kanter develop a reliable 3 point shot? If so, how many attempts per game?
2. What aspects of his defense do you think he can improve?
3. Does having a 3 point shot take away part of his offensive rebounding?
4. When do you think the Stache Bros lineup is the most necessary and effective?

I guess you think starting Sabonis all season was a great idea then? LMAO. Had OKC started Kanter last year and played him the 34 minutes he should be playing they most likely wouldn't have played Houston in the first round and would have had an easier matchup. Instead they start Sabonis who obviously wasn't remotely capable of that role and then in the postseason he didn't even play and now they traded him. Yeah, that's pure genius. Patterson is essentially what Sabonis is. A guy who can't shoot and score and is only capable of averaging around 7 points in 25 minutes and that's simply not going to cut it. Starting Patterson will be a colossal mistake. Why in the world are you asking if Kanter can shoot 3s? That would be idiotic and we all saw what happened to Ibaka's game when he started hanging around the 3 pt. line. Kanter is an elite low post scorer and they just need to give him the ball on the block or run pick and rolls with Russ and let him dominate the offensive glass like he does every game. Hey if you're happy with OKC going 2-11 against the Rockets and Warriors again then you can pile on with the rest of the fans out there who think that starting Patterson and Roberson is going to somehow work but it just shows that you don't understand what we are watching.

Kanter on vs off, Knicks offense stays same but the defense is 5 pts worse with him on. His man scores as efficiently as he does but on a bit fewer attempts. Own team FTs way down with him on, opponent FTs down even more but they are scoring more in other ways.

With McD, same team offensive efficiency on vs. off but defense better with him on.

The net raw impact of the two appears slightly negative on vs. off. The RPM estimates agree with that. Not bad but not great. Melo's RPM is a fairly nice positive and rising. Teams swapped salary specifics and positions. OKC paying more to Melo and getting more so far by RPM. By team wins, Knicks might feel more happy. Best Knicks impact is the expansion of Zingis. Aided by move of Melo but probably coming some anyways this season.

Have you actually watched any Knicks games this season? Just check his last games, do not include the first 5-6 games with the abominable Ramon Sessions & Hornacek trying to figure it out by constantly changing the rotations.
