49ers to work out former Clemson star

http://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2017/09/05/49ers-to-work-out-former-clemson-star/

Whenever I see 49ers and Clemson, whether it's draft or work out, I get a little anxious until I see who it is because there's been very little middle ground for me and them the last several years. It's usually been a solid endorsement for somebody or a flat out stay-the-heck-away from them plea.

This is one of the times when it would be a stay-the-heck-away plea. Does not have the overall make up of a player I usually advocate for. I was surprised at how productive he was able to be for them. Positive: He was a team captain for them and kind of rubs you the right way from a personality standpoint. People will want to root for him I think. Should be willing to play STs as he graded out well there in college. The bad: He's a huge negative on the God-given/physical aspect. Not long at all, stiff, I saw well below average explosion and burst, takes himself out of the play too much when he tries to be a wrecking ball and then winds up on the ground too often, struggles with play recognition (size related maybe?), doesn't disengage from length well at all, and you better not ask him to cover anybody with more than one basic move, otherwise he's likely going to look silly in coverage, yet he was more productive metrics wise than you might think from a coverage aspect but I doubt that'll translate to the pros if he's asked.

If this is them thinking they can maybe get meaningful snaps out of him on defense someday, not necessarily as a starter obviously, then I worry because I wouldn't take a chance on him for that. If this is them thinking we need somebody that can come in and play special teams in a pinch who is a good guy and will do whatever he's asked of, then sure. But usually that's not a type I advocate for for the practice squad because of the major lack of upside. Not that you can always just find those types with the leadership abilities right off the street, but for me this is just a difference in opinion of what I like to stock on the PS and what I'd want to work with and try to take a swing with for the future.

Odell Beckham Jr.'s ankle, Le'Veon Bell's return, 49ers' offense
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: What makes Kyle Shanahan's offense so tough to defend.

A little disappointing that I won't get to see Victor Bolden on special teams today.

Too many yards on 1st down. That should've been stopped a yard or so behind that. :( Ha.

Consider me skeptical that Cam isn't going to be Cam as a runner this year. I'd bet on him being Cam as a runner for quite a while yet. But that's just me.

Ahhhhhhh! If that tipped ball is caught, it's probably going back for six. Maybe Cam and the RB is all that is left. Went to the open part of the field.

Looked like excellent coverage downfield on 3rd down there. Either that or he flat out missed something. Had tons of time to throw. I'll take it either way.

Kittle starting. Starts at TE might not mean much for a while, but there it is.....................

Nice start and at least it won't be the obligatory 3 and out from previous years... and Kittle with a nice catch.

49ers going to continue to lead the league in home false starts? Dear Lord I hope not. How that's still a thing is just amazing to me. Even in their Harbaugh days it was a rolling thing.
