Proposed Draft Game: Tournament Style

Post#1 » by GeorgeMarcus » Mon Sep 11, 2017 8:29 pm

I'm still brainstorming at this point, but I thought it would be cool to start a tournament-style draft game similar to the ones we normally run. Something like this:

Round 1
- 16 participants
- 15 NBA teams randomly selected for player pool
- following draft, teams are subjected to rankings (either by neutral forum-goers or participants themselves)
- top 8 teams advance

Round 2
- 8 participants
- 10 NBA teams (that weren't used Round 1) randomly selected for player pool
- rankings, again
- top 4 teams advance

Round 3
- 4 participants
- 5 remaining NBA teams used for player pool
- final rankings to crown tournament champion

One potential criticism is that, depending on the randomized player pools, draft position might be really important during that 3rd round. That doesn't bother me too much, but one solution could be to use rankings from the previous round to determine draft position in the next. In other words, if your team ranked the highest in Round 1, then you get first dibs on draft position during Round 2.

As far as eligible seasons go, I was thinking post-merger. Typical FGA restrictions would apply as well, but I'm open to suggestions on both accounts.

Let me know if you would be interested, or if you have any suggestions/criticisms (preferably of the 'constructive' variety.)

Think the rankings would have to be from participants giving the state of the manager pool right now. A few regulars have dropped out temporarily or permanently, and there will always be a few who aren't able to play for whatever reason at any given time.

Yeah it would come down to messaging some of the guys from the PC board. I'll probably stick to participant rankings.

I'll post a sign-up thread tomorrow (and include the people who already said 'in' in this thread.) Since we are between drafts, I randomized the first player pool so people can play around with ideas.

The 15 teams eligible for Round 1:
Milwaukee Bucks
Brooklyn Nets
Houston Rockets
Memphis Grizzlies
Philadelphia 76ers
Los Angeles Clippers
San Antonio Spurs
Oklahoma City Thunder (+ SuperSonics)
New Orleans Pelicans
Atlanta Hawks
Sacramento Kings
Toronto Raptors
Indiana Pacers
Detroit Pistons
Miami Heat

Let's hope we can get 16 for this. A bit light on bodies around here lately.

That's an....interesting group of teams for this.

Includes the 3 youngest franchises (Raptors, Pelicans, Grizz) plus the Hawks who are notoriously light on draftable talent. Still some elite talent there too with San Antonio and a few other franchises.

Should be interesting.

So, is the MPG draft off? Or will this run at the same time? Or is it starting at a later date?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I thought they were to run concurrently, although the MPG draft isn't getting much traction right now.

Yeah unless people object I'll probably just get things rolling. Round 2 & 3 make more sense to run concurrently with another draft anyway, due to limited participation.
