The point was it's an established practice for organizations to reach out to agents and players before free agency even though it's technically tampering. Agents and organizations want a head start on the competition or else they'll have limited options when free agency officially begins. Mitch wouldn't do this because he was too by the book, for whatever reason. So in a way Mitch wasn't doing his job when he was GM.

None of this really relates to Paul George, who wasn't a presumptive free agent waiting for the moratorium to expire. He was a player locked under contract for another season and a half from when these tampering events occurred. Very big difference.

so only tampering after the trade deadline of the year they're due to expire?

The Mozgov signing 1 minute after midnight clearly indicates that Mitch wasn't too by the book.

Gotta say....I don't get the cringe. I thought Magic was Magic. Some brutal honesty, mixed with his infectious charm.

Dunno man....I love Magic, and I'm really looking forward to this season. I think the Lakers are in a good place.

It was more to do with his answer to the tampering question.

Gosh I love Magic too (who doesn't?) but I just want him to tone it down by about 20%. That'd be perfect.

I get the cringe... He has no idea how to answer that question, but the Jimmy Kimmel deflection clearly ain't working. It was clearly something bigger/dumber than that... (Emails from Pachenko to Pauls agent.)

Pretty standard interview with Magic... But to me, that's the problem. I think he needs to quit while he's ahead... He's generated enough "positive buzz" he doesn't need to do anymore interviews... Nobody expects the Pres of the Lakers to be this accessible...

I agree with that.

We wanted a complete culture shift from the Mitch/Jimmy era and I get it, Magic is the face. He has to go out and put our good name out there. Let everyone know that the Lakers are a well run organization because players aren't dumb anymore they weigh that kind of stuff into their decisions. He's done that, for now. Just take a step or two back for now. Summer is over, whatever woo'ing that needed to be done is done.

He can get back on that interview trail again after next season when the real coveting will begin and the serious business starts. Thanks to the Ball family the spotlight is on the Lakers all the time anyway and once training camp starts its only going to intensify. Magic and Rob and Lonzo and Lavar have galvanized the city again. Like you said, quit while you're ahead.

That's the whole thing. They're not doing things the old way. Better or worse, and I don't think it's worse. I got plenty of examples of stupid crap done under the prior admin with secrecy that was more to your taste.
