Rather play it safe with Foster....

That's rookie Elijah Lee that they signed. Lee has some physical characteristics many coaches would want to work with and many would tell you it was his last bowl game that helped him get drafted because there was far more talk of him following his performance there than there was prior to that.

For me he wouldn't have been one of the first names off my list but he's not near the worst either. I like his upper body length, he plays a bit faster than he timed, if he sees it correctly he can go and get it for the most part, and is a hard hitter that'll make the tackle more often than not but I don't always love his tackling technique because he'll sometimes try and blow a guy up rather than make the solid tackle. I didn't love the way his lower body worked for him IMO. That kind of ties into the problem I have with him sometimes as a tackler because if he's going to try and blow guys up with the frequency that he likes to try, he doesn't have the weight/strength in his lower half that goes with a guy who tries to blow up guys as much as he likes to. Also, the lack of the lower body development hurts him in getting around and off blocks as well IMO. As I said, if he can see it he's good at going and getting it but if he has to disengage he struggles because of his lower body and some underdeveloped hand usage as well, which most rookies struggle with, but it's magnified just because he's not real developed in his lower body either.

Guy loves to jaw and talk, too. He added to their attitude/swag level on their defense as well and guys on that team would probably say that about him, too. I don't necessarily know if I'd lump that into being a leader with him, because there were other, higher profile defensive starters who were more of a leader for them, but some might lump that into being a type of leader for them.

Interesting the way the game has evolved.

I don't recall rookies being played so early, including undrafted or drafted late rookies.

But the nature of the salary cap and the attrition seem to dictate that vets be pushed out, even many guys who are only in their mid 20s.

It would be interesting to compare the percentage of players given second contract extensions by teams now versus 10-20 years ago. My sense is the percentage is significantly lower now.

Loved Kendall Langford as a pup, liked Jaye Howard later in the draft (Seahawks got him in the 4th). Ahtyba Rubin is completely dependent on which system you put him in, how MUCH you ask him to do, and who plays around him IMO, and there's some to like about McDaniel as he was playing fairly well at times towards the end but he's getting up there in age and there's a million questions I'd have on him as a 32-year old DT.

Seahawks’ Pete Carroll provided insight to 49ers GM John Lynch

http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Pete-Caroll-to-49ers-GM-John-Lynch-You-knew-12195042.php

If there was a thread for links that don't mean a bleep, I'd put this there.

On the same note, this might be my favorite Shanahan quote ever, which isn't saying much.

“He told me they like Cover 3,” Shanahan deadpanned. “I wrote it down. I took a note.”

Asa Jackson - DB - 49ers

49ers promoted CB Asa Jackson from the practice squad.
Jackson could be an option at nickel back with K'Waun Williams. The 49ers waived CB Keith Reaser to clear a roster spot.

Eric Reid won’t need surgery but will miss at least this week

http://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/109254-eric-reid-need-surgery-but-miss-least-week/

If I'm Reid, I'd consider myself lucky if I feel half decent in 8 weeks again. He'll probably be playing by then, according to this, but my very minimal educated guess is he won't start to feel like himself for at least 8 weeks. Sadly. He's one of the only "eraser" type players this team has like I described last week.

Make sure Foster is healed up as much as possible. IMO, not a sincere rush is needed... his play will instantly elevate the defense even further but defensively speaking, thats the least of the immediate glare of problems... i.e. the offense.

49ers ILB Coyle could spell Armstrong more Thursday

http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-ILB-Coyle-could-spell-Armstrong-more-12209965.php

I've said this before once, maybe twice, but Coyle could rapidly approach Nick Bellore territory for me. If I'm wrong, I'll be here. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

San Francisco's DeForest Buckner impresses on TNF

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-san-franciscos-deforest-buckner-impresses-on-tnf

Buckner enters the weekend slate of games as the only interior defender to rank in the top five in both run stop rate (9.4 percent, 3rd) and pass rush productivity (12.8, 3rd).

------------

Buckner has been the unquestioned best defender on the 49ers through three games, positioning himself among elite company at his position. With a 90.4 overall grade on the season, the Oregon-product joins Ndamukong Suh (90.5) and J.J. Watt (90.2) as the only interior defenders with 90.0-plus grade this season.
