Magic turned down Gores job offer

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Thu Sep 14, 2017 2:15 pm

"I turned down three jobs," Johnson said on ESPN's "First Take." "My good friends Peter and Joe bought the Golden State Warriors. They came to me I want you to be an owner, a partner with us I said no I'm a Laker. My friends bought the Detroit Pistons, Tom Gores, and a Michigan State guy. Come on home it would be a great story, I can't I'm a Laker. I could have owned other teams."

Johnson did not offer a timetable of when Gores offered him a job.

Gores bought the Pistons in 2011. In April 2014, Joe Dumars resigned as the President of Basketball Operations. Stan Van Gundy was hired as president and head coach about one month later.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Magic sold his shares with the Lakers and said he wanted a "larger ownership role" with a team right about the same time Gores bought the Pistons. When Gores bought the team he tried to get Magic to own a % of the team but Magic was likely not wanting to uproot from the LA area.

Click bait title IMO mate cause he's talking about ownership.

Wonder who the third team was...maybe the Clippers?

I could have sworn I read a similar thing about Isaiah Thomas too. I think Gores wanted to have some sort of celebrity element to the ownership group.

What is the value of having Magic Johnson working for your team, other than his celebrity? Has he shown insight/talent in management, player evaluation, making deals? I'm not sure, as I have only noticed him as a commenter.

Just about every NBA player respects Magic, and from everything I've read about the people who have worked with him, he's an amazing communicator and logically can be a terrific recruiter of FA's for a team. Jackie Mac was on Zach Lowe's podcast this week, and went into detail about how amazing he is with people.

THIS!

Plus there's the fact he's carved out a successful life after basketball as a businessman

There's no downside to having Magic as a part owner, except paying tampering fines lol

You gotta get them before you can put pieces around them though.

The Lakers failed when Johnson was part owner, they failed when Johnson was the coach. As a GM, the jury is still out. They may continue to fail. He as put a lot of pressure on Ball to carry the franchise

A lot of stupid people think him stupid, but diction isn't intelligence. Besides what you posted, which I agree with, I think he has the ability to know what he doesn't know and to seek those who do. Not everyone has that ability or an ego accepting such a truth. He surrounds himself with people who can help him where he lacks. His main reason for being there is to talk to FAs. There are a lot of Laker fans who talk sh about him and his promise in that regard. However, I think there are players who'd choose to work for him as opposed to some equally unproven empty suit hired by a new billionaire owner. Players know Magic is about winning and that he's been there. His rep is tight in that regard. Perception is important. It's not everything, but when you clean house that consisted of Mich Kupchak (who had just signed Mozgov at 12:01AM) and Jim Buss (idiot son of a great man), you get automatic points no matter who you are. Plus, Pelinka/Rob Lowe is a slickster/former agent. Players are used to dealing with agents. Rob already knows all the lines to tell them about how they're all about THEIR success, yada yada. It doesn't have the same ring as some new twit rich guy who bought the team and put in some other suit that players instinctively know is there to please ownership.

I was a fan back in 1994. That team was Lottery, capital L. Terrible mix of freshmen and sophs and ancients. They actually did vie for the 8th seed until a late season loss to Denver (the year they beat SEA) eliminated them. That's freakish considering how bad that team was. He only coached the last 16 gms, too.

Of all the legends to have as a part owner I don't think anyone could honestly pick many better than Magic.

There's the obvious on court achievements. He can pull the Pat Riley bit and put his rings on the desk!

It's the off court business success that IMO is more important.

Lots of players make millions and end up broke!

Lots of dudes didn't get much of a education either.

Magic can honestly help dudes set up a life off the floor after basketball

Time will tell but I honestly can't see a reason why a owner wouldn't want Magic in the room pitching free agents
