The sad part is if Brandon Wright is really a center, then isn't Rabb the best power forward currently on the roster. That fact tells us all we need to know regarding roster construction for the Grizzlies.

Assuming Green either plays for the QO or on a short deal, we have to let 3 people go. Martin looks like the odd man out. One of Harrison, Chalmers, and Wade should also be gone. Not sure what they do to get the third spot. Hopefully we can make a trade or two in order to try and at least get something back for the players we are going to have to lose.

Think Green to Boston still has traction. Do Bird rights transfer in a sign & trade? Ie, could Boston get him on a 1 year guaranteed deal, second and third years a player option, at a low salary, like minimally above what he’d get with the QO, with the idea we could re-up him next summer after he opted out?

What the Grizzlies have constructed so far with the roster is a telling sign they could be going through some rocky times this season. It's a bit surprising they haven't found takers for Wright's contract. Have they sit down with him this summer and discuss what his role with the team over the summer is the question.

I think that the bird rights transfer but don't quote me on that ha. A smarter person than I needs to answer that for a more definite answer. I agree though that Green to Boston would make a lot of sense for Boston.

I’ll see if I can tag Smitty, who posts on our board and knows the cap.

Keith, any info on legitimacy of Jam Green to Boston rumors, or about my Bird rights question?

Boston can't offer him anything more than the minimum in an outright signing. In a S&T, they would have to give players back to the Grizzlies and I'm not sure there is a match that makes sense.

If it was a S&T, the Bird Rights would transfer, but here is the sticky part.

You can only have an option on the last year of a contract (Rookie Scale deals work differently). So, Green would have to take a fairly low salary for a couple of years, and I think he'd just sign his QO over that.

So I thought only the first year had to be guaranteed, for a sign and trade.. I was imagining something like a three year deal, second and third years nonguaranteed.. and that Boston could decline to pick up the option next summer, but keep his cap hold and Bird rights, and re-sign him at market price - or let him walk.

I don’t know if that’s allowed - but the incentive for Green would be to play out his QO year on a more competitive team, with more visibility and possibly more minutes. The QO is so small anyway - 2.8 million - that taking something in that range and transferring his Bird rights would help.

The minimum salary for a player with two years of experience is 1.4 million, so he could also just ask Memphis to rescind the QO, and sign somewhere else for a year to audition for a bigger deal - though that’s a big risk.

I know Boston couldn’t agree to that in advance, or promise him the full 8+ million MLE next summer - but it’d be a possibility they’d all be keeping open.
