So say a contract that starts at 90% of the max, and if he makes an all star game increases by 5% and all nba another 5%. Personally, I think your're matching an RFA offer anyways and I'd rather foster goodwill now and sign whatever deal it takes to get it done than wait and get some goofy poison pill type max deal you need to match.

Offering him less than the max is only an option for this fall. The reason that he may accept it is because it is a hedge against him getting some sort of injury in the next year that keeps him from getting a max deal next summer.

Next year, if he has a good season this year, we should offer him the full max without reservations.

Besides did you hear Embiid when asked about whether his contract was the reason he was not playing... he basically laughed at it but at the same time said that he basically has no bargaining power anyway in this contract as a RFA. He is not stupid... he knows the 76ers are going to want a discount because of his injury history.. just like the Warriors did with Steph Curry. If they didn't the deal would have been signed sealed and delivered weeks ago.

Yeah, thats why nothing gets done yet. Because Sixers is asking for discount but both parties think its very likely Biid asks for max. Biid has leverage, he can not follow the restrictions or voice out regarding this which I doubt he will say during media day

Of course Biid asks for the max... I mean Nerlens Noel demanded the max and now he is being dropped back to the bench by the Mavs (Where he belonged all along)

As I said before... Embiid probably has an offer of $20 to $25 mill a year on the table if he signs now. Does he really want to risk $75 to $100 million dollars and being set up for life... or does he want to go into this season without another contract with the hope he doesn't get another career ending foot injury before he signs that deal.

All that risk just so he can get the max and make an extra $5 mill a year at the end of this year? Financial stupidity on his part if he did... and his agent should be sacked if he gives him that advice.

If Embiid is smart(and he is) he would wait until after the season to get a contract. That way he maximizes his value. If the Sixers are smart they should try to get the deal done now to get a bargain because anything less than the max is a bargain. A dollar less than the max is a bargain. This could be Embiid's last chance to get a huge payday so he will not willingly settle for a non max contract. After the season teams will throw the max at him if he's not extended by then. He would have more teams to throw money at him. And no he should NOT give a hometown discount to the Sixers. This is a business and what's best for Embiid is going to the highest bidder. I hope the Sixers can lock him up now though.

The smartest thing for Embiid would probably be to accept a 90% of max deal today because waiting until next summer runs the risk of something bad happening this season. The risk of another navicular injury is not trivial, and if he gets another one he won't get a max deal from anyone next year. It is a gamble.

If I was his dad I would advise him to take a 90% Max deal today. Take the security while you have the chance.

The Sixers should start at 70% of the max and have a limit of 90% of the max. If Embiid says no to 90% of the max then it would just be wise to just ride it out until the season and just match any off. What's the point of giving him a max now if you can do it after the season? The only contract the Sixers should get done now is a non max deal.

Agreed.

There is no reason to offer a Max deal today. I would be careful not to insult the man though and 70% of the max is probably a needless low ball. We want him to appreciate our position, and see that we appreciate HIS position.

If BC can get Embiid to sign a 90% max deal then it would be a clear win for the team, and would be a feather in his cap as a GM.

It depends on his health. Has he been healthy and the doctors believe him to be fully recovered then yes I offer him a max. If not no. I see no need to do something preemptively stupid just because we are worried another team may do something stupid.

Also the idea that teams are going to be crawling over themselves offering Embiid a max deal should he get injured again just isn't borne of reality. Bynum is a perfect example. He signed a couple of one year deals after he got injured. Noone threw big money at him. Oden is another guy after he came back with Miami noone threw big money at him.

I hope to god he stays fully healthy and has a long career but I find it extremely doubtful anyone gives him in a longterm deal of 4 deals at significant money let alone the max should the unthinkable happen. If they do like I said earlier we deal with that when the time comes but the idea we need to sign Embiid to a max deal now. Why?

If he is willing to sign a deal for 60 percent of the max sure you take a look at it but 70 percent, 80 percent, 90 percent sorry the potential savings do not justify the risk.

You're completely out of your mind if you think that's going to happen.

Team's are going to be willing to gamble on Embiid, if only because when healthy he's possibly a top 5 player in the NBA as soon as this season. At least insofar as ability to win you a basketball game that he's playing in.

Those kinds of players are very rare, almost impossible to acquire, and they're also hugely underpaid relative to their value in an uncapped market. If the CBA did not restrict the maximum amount of money a player could make, someone like LeBron would make a lot more, because his true value to your team is far greater than the max. Same with any true superstar level player.

This is not the case with Bynum, who was always a complimentary player even during his best days. Or Oden, who had no mobility left when he was hobbling around on 1 year deals.

If you think Embiid has a 50% chance of being healthy enough for a few seasons/playoffs of that level of player, you max him. Hell, you probably do it for a 30% chance. Championships are rare. I shouldn't have to remind you that the Sixers only have 3 and the last one was 34 years ago. A true chance to win one simply doesn't come around that often. A player of Embiid's caliber gives you that chance. You're not likely to win one without him.

Let's say he had the EXACT same number of games played as 31 this season and he gets nicked up again but nothing major. Let's say he got turf toe or got a miniscus tear again. His foot is fine. His back is fine but he just got nicked up. Would you match a max?

Link?

Was that from Pompey, I think I read the same thing...

I think that's not too surprising. Don't think he needs to play 5 on 5 during camp to play during the preseason or first game of the season.

If what he says is true, and I'm starting to believe it is, because it would be super hard to rehearse so many specific answers, Embiid is trying to lose weight, get his landings down, and improve conditioning.

Seeing that he just told us this yesterday, I'm thinking it would take longer than a week to be cleared.

IMO, we'll see him play the last 2 games of preseason.

I think we all would. The issue I have is with people saying just offer him the max now before the deadline. It's madness.

There is absolutely no reason to be signing up at all unless it is less than 90% of the max right now (I'd even go so far as say 80% only). If he goes through the season and other teams are still offering him the max at the end of the year then it's because they are not concerned over his injury.... which of course would be the same for us.

If he breaks his foot again though... there will not be a single team in the league willing to give him the Max... and neither should we.

So now it's in Joel's court... take your $70 million now and set yourself up for life regardless of whether you break down this year.... or risk your entire life savings over getting an extra $5 or $10 mill at the end of the year. I know what I would do if I'd played 30 games in 3 years and keep breaking down.

Return to Philadelphia 76ers
