I remember when Dwade and Lebron opted out of their earlier deal after year three and signed deals that made them free agents in 2010. Melo went against LeBron's advice and opted in and made him a free agent in 2011. Imagine if he was a free agent in 2010. Melo would have came, maybe we would have paused on Amare and got CP3 in free agency.

If that lockout didn't threaten to cut player salaries maybe Melo could have waited for free agency. And we used those remaining assets to get a great guard.

I'm glad Melo came. He gave the Knicks sexiness. When on he is a joy to watch. When he's frustrated he can be maddening to watch.

I felt Melo and the Knicks brand were a perfect match. Both iconic entities with major flaws. Both reputations carried by championship pasts but easily critiqued present. Both mishandled by management. Both seeing comparable entities accomplish more. I was hoping together they would win together as they were fighting the same demons. Alas the demons prevail.

I wish him the best. I'm happy for him. I'm happy for the Knicks.

mediocrity and underachieving and losing is not sexy.

Maybe im looking at this wrong but everyone was mad carmelo doesn't like to pass and wanted him gone but the appreciation thread is littered with moments of high scoring games from carmelo. So you appreciate what you hated him for? :-? not passing and getting buckets?

You obviously can't make a video about his passing, if he doesn't pass, can you?

Knick? Brought up as one.
Melo? Liked him since college.

I remember Ewing. I don't remember all the damn drama though. Would have been sick if I was older and remembered the foolishness.

i appreciate he never made excuses and accepted the blame when things went south. Thats a highlight for me

But losing season after losing season (not his fault but a reality) and only getting to the 2nd round... is there honestly much to appreciate. scoring alot of points just doesn't move me

i do hope he wins a chip in OKC though

nope he never did that. if he had done so he (a) would have changed and grown as a player and (b) would have been regarded as a true leader by everyone without qualifications and (c) have won more.

Why fans can't separate team and individual success is weird to me.

Melo was a great player individually but that didn't translate to team wins once Phil stepped in NY. Fans didn't like Melo even before then though so they love using what they, themselves would call "stealth" tanking seasons against him. Keep it 100. You didn't like him when the team was successful. People came at him during that 54 win season. Some fans never gave dude a chance because of the trade that brought him here along with the Lin situation.

There is no way you thought those teams that Phil put together were any good. We literally started Jason Smith, Calderon, Shumpert and Dalembert with Melo being expected to carry that. Why? Common sense tells you that's not a recipe for team success. Where is the damn team? You got more of the same Phil's 2nd year here. Last year Phil finally tried to add good players but proceeded to put together an ill fitting team from the PG to the coach because he didn't consider a coherent roster direction and play style due to him trying to prove himself right about his damn triangle.

Team success is just that. TEAM SUCCESS. The funny thing is that people understand this logic when it comes to KP. He can have a great year and the team stink. That's exactly what went on with Melo. He's showing up but getting no help. Therefore there will be no team success because one player can't do it all. All of these mofo's cash checks. It wasn't Melo's responsibility just like it will not be KP's responsibility to earn his and his teammates paychecks.

It's just unfortunate they could never find the right fit to maximize his time here in terms of coaching and supporting cast. Amar'e getting hurt was a huge blow. He was supposed to be that guy. We were never able to find anyone close to him in terms of talent. And hiring that idiot Phil was the nail in the coffin.

But Melo deserves blame too. It seemed drama and this black cloud followed him everywhere. Maybe he'll have better luck in OKC. I also don't believe outside that 2013 team that he gave it his 110% all. But whatever. It's done and over with. It just wasn't meant to be.

Then you never saw Bernard King play.

I was born in 82 so not really but watching highlights, Melo looks a little better and more versatile. King was more of a post scorer and stop and pop and had no 3 point shot.

He writes a nice letter. Let's trade him to the NY Times.

If that's not possible, maybe OKC can facilitate his bromance with Melo.

Lance is sus, son wrote a whole letter. Sound like he love Melo the person more than Melo the ball player. Melo sure has admirers for his off the court personality. Which is great but its his on the court stuff that we had to move on from.

I get it. And technically to the same franchise - Sonics/Thunder. I remember seeing him in that jersey for the first time and it was awful.

In this case, you can take solace that it was probably best for both parties. Melo will probably have some vintage years with stacked teams before the real decline sets in. Pat was cooked and when he was traded, finally gave up the ghost a bit and accepted being a role player.

Why tho?

You need vets on the team!

Lance was always regarded as a good locker room presence.

KP even wanted him signed after 15/16 season.

Last year he was awful - but that mainly because he was always injured..
