Earl Watson - Accountability Thread

That would still be a large feat for such a young team. Playing at that pace obviously won't allow us to limit PPG of opponents to a league wide average, but if we can do better on PPP, opponent fg% and 3pt fg%, that would be nice.

His interim head coach role really shouldn't be the starting point for judging him negatively. The guy took over a dysfunctional team after the head coach and both assistant head coaches were dumped. Putting in a new system with young players when over half the season is done seems like a ridiculous ask by anyone. Even then he managed to get value for Kief by making him the number one option on offense and inflating his numbers so we could get decent trade return. Remember that Bledsoe and Knight were both injured and our starting guards were Goodwin and Booker

Seven players are left from the 2015/2016 team (Booker, Bledsoe, Knight, Len, Warren, Williams, and Chandler)

As far as I am concerned Booker, Bledsoe, Warren, and Williams have all improved. Chandler is what he is but the fact that he wanted to stick around instead of being traded says an awful lot about Earl. Chandler has seen plenty of head coaches to know if things are being handled properly.

Now in 2016/2017 you add two vets (Dudley, Barbosa) and four rookies (Ulis, Bender, Chris, DJJ) and you expect miracles to happen? Really Ulis, Chris, and DJJ showed decent improvement in the last half of the year when they got minutes. Bender was injured and it's really difficult to measure that. Watson pushed his family/team first environment and it is really nice to see decent human beings as opposed to thugs and me first guys like the Morri.

Watson putting Knight in a sixth man role and then benching him was a damn good thing too. Len just hasn't improved under any coach. He's just another Great White Hope that didn't pan out as usual. Another thing to consider is the head coach also has decent input into draft selections or free agent pickups. Watson didn't have that for Len or Knight but I think the other players added since he has taken over have been mostly positive pickups and draft picks.

Right now this looks like a thread devoted to blasting a coach who has had one full year to put his imprint on basically the youngest team in the league and that has gotten even younger this year. I'm glad he got a three year contract and I expect he will be around next season too. Really guys we need some continuity in the front office and leadership positions. I'm glad that McD was extended too because turmoil and turnover really create instability. We've had plenty of roster and front office turnover the last few years. Time to let things settle in for a while.

I definitely agree. Plus, he needs time as he is young, but he is already doing a lot of things right. IMO the most important part of a team is chemistry and unity. If you don't have that, you're done. We have that. We just lack talent, or developed talent because everyone is really young.

D'Antoni wouldn't have done jack **** with this squad and I like D'Antoni.

Watson is definitely the right coach for this team right now. In a year or two? Maybe not, but hopefully he is because things are going well.

Such a good point, I think the D'antoni comparisons are apples to oranges given the talent he had on the team vs what we have now and where the players are in their careers. I don't think Watson is currently the best X's and O's coach, but when it comes to developing young talent and a competitive culture he is doing exactly what we'd want. His players have bought in to whatever system he has, even while losing they play hard for him. Our young players are showing improvement and are constantly in the gym together. I hope Watson does develop his system to be successful in this league, he definitely understands the game and has the respect of players and coaches throughout the nba.
