I can see it now: Clips are either going to be the worst defensive team in the league (30th) or worst defensive team in the playoffs (20th or lower). Clips have no other choice but to rev up their offense from the very start and never relinquish it. Seven Seconds Or Less, Mike D'Antoni-Steve Nash Phoenix Suns 2.0 is their only hope.
Having said that, if there's any defense the Clips need to prioritize, it's the 3-point line. From the start to the 5 minute mark in the 4th quarter, give up preventing the 2s, prevent the 3s. The only time Clips should contest both 2s and 3s should be in crunch time, especially during a Sudden Death Shot. The shots allowed could vary from opponent to opponent, except the Warriors for they can make anything against them.
Clips have yet to face a Sudden Death Shot situation - a non-tying buzzer beating game winner when down 1 or 2 PTS with 5 seconds left in the 4th quarter and in overtime, and the shot is made right at the buzzer. On offense, Danilo Gallinari is the designated Sudden Death Shooter by default, but we could see Sudden Death by committee. Defense, Doc will have to predict the kind of shot the opponent will attempt to make, relying only on the margin. If they're up 2, give them the tie and go to overtime. If they're up 1, they'll have to defend every shot opportunity, and I think Patrick Beverley, DeAndre Jordan and Austin Rivers could be overworked into a defensive lapse that could prove costly. It's gonna be one hell of a wake-up call for Doc's philosophy on rebounds.
Otherwise, they're gonna need blow out margins of 20 points or more per night just to win a game and stay in the playoff hunt.
