Returning, and a poll!

For the Wizards to be a real contender what ONE thing has to happen next?

We're already a legit contender. Wall and Beal just have to stay healthy.

Out starting 5 is locked and loaded. But the bench must improve.

One of the young'ins (Porter, Oubre) must become an All Star.

We need a top tier big man. Trade for Cousins or M. Gasol, even if it costs Porter.

Get young tough rim protector (e.g. Drummond) at a reasonable price (e.g. Gortat and Morris to match salaries).

Hit it big late in the draft, a la GS with Drummond or Chicago with Butler.

Returning, and a poll!

Post#1 » by Wiz99 » Fri Oct 6, 2017 5:23 pm

Hey gang! Coming back after a multi year absence.

Since we're no longer debating whether to lock up Antawn Jamison to a big deal, if Blatche will ever get it, or whether Juan Dixon really is amazingly sucky, I want to reacquaint myself with the different strains of thinking on the board now.

If we could do just one thing, what would do he most to make us a contender, at a price you're willing to pay, at odds you think are reasonable to risk?

Does being a contender mean you have a legitimate shot at beating Golden State? If so, I would say there's nothing the Wizards can do.

That looms large in my mind, too. I think the Wizards real window opens in 2-3 years when Golden State drops a notch (even the all time greatest teams rarely put it all together for more than 3 seasons at a time) and Lebron slows in his mid-30s.

With that timing in mind, I don't want to ship Porter in a big move now for a guy like Cousins. I'd rather see the one big move the Wiz make now be getting significantly younger, tougher in the front court with a rim protector like Drummond. Then over the next several years really support Otto and Kelly to mature.

I'd be just fine with a 2020 opening night roster, average age 27 no one over 30 no one under 24, with 2-3 all stars, of Wall-Beal-Oubre-Porter-Drummond.

You think you can just waltz in here and start a poll? Of course you can. But why isn't signing Oberto an option?

I think they gotta get blind lucky with injuries - meaning Lebron James gets injured. Cleveland's gonna dominate the East, but there's nobody else that's clearly better than the Wiz. I don't see the Wiz increasing their payroll, so finding a diamond in the rough and developing him would be really helpful.

I'm not quite as pessimistic. Here is my solution:
-Otto increases his usage (>20%), without having a big drop in efficiency, and puts on some weight.
-Get a GM who knows how to use draft picks. This team REALLY needs to invest in a young, athletic big man that plays D.
-Replace Markieff in the starting lineup with a young big PF that can rebound and shoot 3s.

No kidding.

Here's the thing -- that'll be either year 1 or year 2 of Oubre's second contract. Lets see... how much do you think we might be paying him that year? Lets say he's a bargain; we re-sign him for only $10m. Not likely, huh?

Oh well, indulge me for a second: if we do that, get Oubre re-signed for $10m, then your starting five will be earning $136.5m.

Oooops. Looks like we aren't exactly in a position to add Andre Drummond, huh? In fact, we might not be in a position to retain Kelly Oubre.

So, to answer your first question

That's easy: fire Ernie Grunfeld.

Fire Ernie would be good but probably isn't sufficient. New owner would be much better.

You won't get any argument from me there, but what would you have the new GM do? What's the top thing you'd like to see them do this coming season that better positions us for a championship?

Turn Oubre, Mahinmi, Smith and a draft pick into DeMarcus Cousins.

On the subject of firing Ernie, watch Jarrett Allen turn into a good player for the Nets. Ernie burned that draft pick just to get rid of his mistake Nicholson and have Bogdanovic fail in the playoffs.

other.

no such thing as a contender unless you can contend with the GSW. To do that you need elite defense and otherworldly offense. the only way to achieve otherworldly offense is when superstars with elite scoring ability including elite 3pt shooting on high volume play for each other instead of themselves. To do that superstars must learn to and consistently play like role players. By that I mean ball movement, off ball movement. Tiring defenses out, making the defense rotate and waiting for the open shot instead of "superstars taking contested tough shots in an iso ball offense. everyone on the court must be able to score efficiently. everyone must be able to play elite team defense. Full buy in. the coach, the bench, the role players, the superstars. even the GM cant be hedging with the future like Ainge is. everyone.

Only 4 teams are doing that right now. of those 4 only 3 have parts that fit. of those 3 that have parts that fit, only the GSW has prime all NBA talent at 4 positions.

the answer is there is no answer. no one is a contender.
like i said, its a full rebuild.

I like it. A little Samuel Beckett/Joseph Heller basketball commentary.

SD, this is off topic, but remind me how you became a Wiz/Bullets fan.

You grew up and still live in Chicago, right?

I'm always interested in hearing about personal connections to this franchise that only a rare few of us have stuck with through thin and thin.

i used to be a foolish and naive "fan" of players versus the game itself or of teams. typical egomaniac former player that knew it all because i played. now im just a knowitall that actually knows it all. oh the curse of knowing too much and understanding things before everyone else does. So i followed MJ over in 1999-2000. And I foolishly hung on to my childhood "hero" as well as to the story line of the old man's "still got it." Glad I came though. I ended up learning a ton more about the game than I thought knew as a (decent) player. ahhhhh....(If i'd only known when i was younger.) And I ended up enjoying the conversation on realgm more than the game itself.

I came across the site itself from jro and greendale promoting on espn boards in 2001. I read for a year before I joined. those of you that know, wizkev was doing analytics things very early on. from like 2000-2001.

wiz board easily has the best posters on this entire site. your mods are the best so it allows for the smartest and most intellectual posting. difference of opinion is a good thing!!!
like i said, its a full rebuild.

This is impossible -- not the trade itself (tho I can't believe I see you wanting to trade a draft pick!!), but adding a 4th player at his salary level. Can't be done.

Also Tony Bradley, Caleb Swanigan, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart -- all very promising young players.

Not to mention the jettisoned R1 pick the previous year. & the discarded R2 picks. & the strategic failure to *acquire* high R2 picks using money that falls outside of cap rules.

A good thing the ping pong balls got us Wall & Porter. The ping pong balls appear to be a better GM than the guy in that job.
