Re: Jabari Thread - Rehab, Game, Contract
People keep comparing Jabari's situation to Embiid's, but Embiid is the type of talent that can put up 19 and 7 in 9 minutes like he has so far tonight.
I just don't see the connection.
In a universe where Embiid hadn't signed an extension, he could have blown out his knee in the 2nd quarter tonight and still be guaranteed to get a max contract next summer. He's so talented a risk like that is worth it for some team. There really is no point in connecting his contract to Jabari's.

You mentioned his RFA status earlier in this thread and that is what I've been talking about since he got hurt. The only reason the Bucks should agree to a contract now is if it is very beneficial to the team. If not, you let him test what has been a very lukewarm RFA market after playing 20+ games at the end of the year. If a team really wants to drop a huge contract on an unproven young talent at that point you evaluate and potentially let him walk. But the most likely scenario is that another team doesn't drop a huge contract on him because of the injuries, the remaining questions about his game, and the ability of the Bucks to match anyway.
Narrative also matters to a certain extent. If the Bucks extend Jabari, there is a certain acceptance because they drafted him even if it goes badly. Does a GM from another team really want to hand out a massive contract to such a potential risk when there will be basically no forgiveness for a mistake?
The only way I see things backfiring on the Bucks is if Jabari comes back and plays like an absolute monster the last few weeks of the season, but there is almost no chance of that happening.

Re: Jabari Thread - Rehab, Game, Contract
The hard pill for me to swollow is Giannis' contract. I just can't get past paying Jabari more than Giannis.
Had Gianni's signed a 150M contract and Jabari got $125, I'd be ok with it. But Jabari shouldn't be the highest paid player. That should belong to Giannis.
Unfortunately for Jabari, that means you get less. Or find someone who disagrees.

I doubt that Giannis will care at all if Jabari earns more btw.
In the end with the commercials and the sneaker deals he will always get more money than Jabari anyway.

Re: Jabari Thread - Rehab, Game, Contract
It's the principle
why is Giannis leaving money on the table to help the team but Jabari has to snatch every dollar he can? Just bad form.
And if he was healthy what would he be asking for then? Prima nocta?

I mean he's up there and dunking, but he's nowhere near hitting his head on the rim in that video.

Well we know why Jabari is snatching every dollar he can. I wish it wasn't like this but I kinda can't blame him.

Oops. Watched it again on my computer, I had a bumpy commute this morning, I should not make comments from watching videos on a shaking phone!

Giles? Or are we staying away from knees and Dukes
I'm fine with Dukies, but I'd prefer a guy without multiple knee recons, yes. Exum?
I thought of him too. But he breaks in all places and is still a project. Maybe.

Exum is one knee away from multiple knees. And throw in a bung shoulder.

Any team willing to gamble on his future, knowing that he wants/expects a big contract, will not be willing to give up much of value that does not carry it's own downside - either a hefty salary that is exceeds on court production, or a comparable injury risk, or a team chemistry problem.
Complicating the Bucks ability to get value for Parker is the short window of time between his return and the trade deadline.
With the trade route offering limited hope, the Bucks' alternative would be to sign Parker to a fair deal. Unfortunately, that will have them meeting Parker's "market value", when that market value is set by whatever one other team is willing to pay. Even with his injury history, Parker is a rare talent that some NBA team is likely to gamble on with a large contract.
Regardless of the outcome, I expect there will be a lot of groaning when his near term future is decided.
The above is a pretty candid assessment of the situation at hand.
Given the fact that we are not time-travelers, the whole thing reminds me of a quote from "Casino" (or was it "Goodfellas"?, can't remember right now), when the mob leaders in prison were discussing who subordinate to whack so that they wouldn't talk in court against them.

- Yes, been with us many years, very sound fellow

Because 99.999999% of our signings will be snatching as much as they can. Does it matter if that extra couple mil goes to Jabari or a Telly type signing? The giannis contract has nothing to do with the value of Parker. It's thick headed and makes no sense for a successful operation. Giannis won't care if Parker makes more than him as long as he's worth it. Giannis will be pissed and leave if we don't put talent around him.

It doesn't matter how much Giannis is making. $125 million for Jabari is insanity.

Re: Jabari Thread - Rehab, Game, Contract
Because I rather give every dollar I can to whatever All-Star we can get in a trade of Jabari. He's injured, our team plays better without him, and we don't need someone that plays his position. And a trade of our pick + him + one of Thon, Brogdon, or DJ would yield an All-NBA guard like Conley, Lilliard, or Kemba and still leave the team with Giannis, Middleton, and two of Thon, Brogdon, or DJ. That's a championship team
Also, and I don't even think GMs think of this but they should. But Jabari is not marketable
Embiid is marketable
Giannis is marketable
Even Delly's marketablity is worth whatever overpay you think he's getting.
Why not ask Jabari for a list of teams he would want to play for and have him and his agent work out an extend and trade between the two of us?

Well Giannis did it for the precise reason of being able to pay others to build a team around him, so I don't see how he's then going to get all offended for doing it. Second reason he did it was to be able to hit free agency a year earlier and lock in his next mega deal sooner, and the one after that year earlier. Those reasons are for him, he's assuming that in year 1 of his next deal he'll be able to make more than if he'd done a year 5 in this deal. Plus he always hits FA a year earlier each time for the rest of his career.
That said, I think you'd all know I don't want anything to do with Jabari on a max.
