IMO, we don't really need a classic PG when Blake and Gallo are on the floor

but they don't D
gotta stop the opps

prove it.

no stats show Austin to be anything but an average defender. Patrick is an elite, and Milos have not shown to be as terrible as he was scouted in Europe to be, and his offensive tools overshadow any shortcoming to Austin on D.

Let's see. Wasn't talking about Austin specifically except he was conspicuous by his absence in a defensive embarrassment [POR scored 134, actually].

The point would be Milos is a bit redundant if the extremely creative Blake and Gallo are on the floor [and Beverly is also a plus facilitator]. If we don't really need his offense, then his bad defense does not balance out.

FTR, Austin's offensive stats were very good as a starter. If we stipulate his defense is only average, we still must admit that Milos's is below average, perhaps very below average. If Blake and Gallo are also below average--and many think they are--then more defense is needed on the top 5-man unit more than overkill on offense.

Who knows? If Sindarious is the better defender at the 2, perhaps he's the best fit for the 5-man unit. He can go stay out of the way in the corner like Luc did when we have the ball.

And for the Austin haters [and you know who you are, LOL], besides injuring his butt in the first quarter of the opener, it also turns out he had mono this summer and is still easily fatigued. He admittedly looked like s**t in the opener, but we should hate on him fair and square, not on a humbug. :curse:

so in other words, you have no clue.

his Defensive +/- is net negative with him on the floor.

his D rating per 100 possession was 112 last season, the season he was supposed to have become a defensive NBA player. his career is 111. for those who say the ratings per 100 depends on the pace, his O rating was 105, making him a net negative 7.

bring it.

Well, actually I don't mind admitting I haven't a clue. That's why I said "Let's see."

I don't know what's going to happen when Austin plays with real NBAers instead of the dreck we were forced to trot out as the league's worst [or nearly so] second unit the past few years. According to stats I'm sure you've seen, his stats were damn good as a starter.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/5u0t24/austin_rivers_as_a_starter_in_20162017/

Austin's stats as a starter this year, in a sample of 25 games, are
16.3-4-2.8 on 46-42.4-70.9 shooting splits.
This should finally put the "argument" that he's only in the NBA because of the father to rest.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/riverau01/splits/2017

AR25's advanced stats suck, no doubt about it. OTOH, Beverley's [with HOU] aren't that hot either. Some players don't do well in advanced stats and some guys who really suck look pretty good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was only a combined 125 minutes or so, but the best 5-man lineup last year for net efficiency was with Austin at SF instead of Luc. [I'd look it up but it's not worth the work. You can if you want. It's there.] What that proves, I dunno. Maybe nothing, maybe that he's not nearly as useless as some believe. I personally think he was quite the hero by filling in as a starter at 3 different positions last year. Since Austin rates as somewhere between our 6th and 8th-best player, he's the least of our problems IMO.

In the meantime, I AM worried if we're gonna guard anybody this year. Milos is a fun and shiny new toy but I'm more clueless about him than Austin because of the D. We're gonna get our points one way or another but...

Please there is no need for a harsh quarrel between forum members, it's not helping. It's not like that reaching an accord among the members of this forum has an impact on the team in real life , right? (why am I than writing this overextended post  ) As one of the members already mentioned, the question of starters is less important than bone of contention of the best possible roster.

Words from another member also came true as LAC showed bad defense in general (specially) awful protection of opponent perimeter shots, outside shots , followed by unacceptable number of TO. It will be hard for for coaching staff to fix all those shortcomings before the seasons starts, so it would be better if they could focus on finding the right line ups in right minutes.

Milos certainly doesn't mind walking into the game from bench , what he does minds is getting his minutes in a time where his bear upon the result can be evident. IMO Austin and Lou are better defensive duo and their usage can be more serviceable in games against an opponents with a gifted guard tandem. Absence of this combination was salient in the last game and this already mentioned Achilles heel will be more perceptible in the game to come versus teams such as HOU or GSW, for sure. This problem is even enhances when we apprehend the way of how NBA squads are going small and shooting-minded as the time passes bye.

To be more meticulous, other than having issues with a roster in general it will be a peculiar task for Doc to find a right combo of guards on the floor. It is to soon to give the best option judging from a preseason games and mixing starters with role players shall probably continue with the start of the season. One thing is sure Teodosic will not be able to contribute to defense over and above his effort, while Austin Rivers could. Time will show who is better choice after offensive/defensive impact is measured. Evans also seeks for his righteous place while Lou Williams might be bored of having the best 6th man status. Maybe Teodosic could help in situations when team yearns for a simple points or in times when trading baskets is commodious for keeping the lead. I still think that Teo can help other players to look better so besides his accommodation to NBA style of game in general, he should also habituate in foul making management (now he has extra foul to give compared with international basketball) I think he ought to give those to stop drives rather than stop shots. Although Milos cares only about winning all this is not about him, other players must follow the Beverly attitude and they shouldn't let 3pt fest like they did against POR.

All in all LAC of this season is a half-new team so adjusting time will be extended well deep to a season. Hype about the new players, specially new guards, is overindulgent and it does not help to anyone in the team. From what I saw Willie Reed deserves significant minutes, Dekker with his stroke and activity on offensive glass can hope for his blooming NBA season, and yet there are other bench players too. Skeleton of the team are Griffin , DJ and ? , also muscles are with those first two guys , but other than Doc who is the brain. Gallinary surely knows how to exploit his advantages but primal organisation of the plays will continue to be the issue on both sides of the court with the special stress on defense. As this thread is about Teo, it is still very possible it he turns out to be a huge embarrassment, because of his transparent limitations, but on the other hand his talent is evident as well. My point is that not only he has to adjust to the NBA and his team but the team has to adjust little bit to him also. That is the catch.

LOL, no quarrel around here. This is almost word-for-word what I already wrote.

On the wild card front, I've been 'pump the brakes' on Sindarious because he was a SF in college, and at the same height as Austin, is not a genuine NBA 3. But it looks like he can defend the 2, which means you could put him out there with Milos or Lou on the second unit. And who knows? Maybe you throw him at Durant and see what happens. We were so deperate we even gave CP a shot.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/la-sp-clippers-report-20171009-story.html

Thornwell played 21 minutes Sunday in the Clippers’ preseason game against the Portland Trail Blazers, contributing 14 points while connecting on two three-pointers.

“He was aggressive and confident. Everyone’s telling him to play his game. He went out and did that,” Clippers forward Wesley Johnson said.

Thornwell made it to the Final Four last season at South Carolina, playing under intense disciplinarian Frank Martin.

“With Coach, if you’re not playing defense, you’re not playing, so I want to play defense. It’s natural and easy for me to do that,” Thornwell said. “That’s my niche — being able to give guys breaks on the defensive end so they can be more aggressive on offense.”

And as for Austin, even best case looks like his minutes need to stay low for the foreseeable future. At the moment, he's playing catch up on his conditioning as well, and it might be one of those seasons where you're never really right.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/clippers/la-sp-clippers-blazers-20171008-story.html
Austin missed about five weeks of training during the summer while he recovered from mononucleosis.

"You know how that goes,” Doc said. “And Austin, I think we all believe a lot of this is all due to the mono. You’re tired, and so that’s a tough break for him. You can’t do anything about it and it’s going to take a while. Those things have taken half a year sometimes to get through it all. He’s just going to have to deal with it. Where he’s just going to have to be is really honest on his fatigue, because we have to really monitor that.

Williams is not a good fit for the starters since he is trigger happy and is not good on D. I've heard him say he is perfectly comfortable being the 6th man of the bench and that is where he is very valuable.

Beverly is a must for the starters since he is a pitbull defender that the starters need.

That means that you either start Milos or Rivers next to Beverly.
Milos and Williams is a terrible combination since they are both below average defenders and both are best with the ball in their hands. It leaves one possibility of Milos and Beverly as starters and Rivers and Williams in second unit.

I dont see the problem with second unit offense, just let Williams and Rivers do what they do anyway and that is isoball.
Milos is much more valuable to generate open looks to the starter and be a good off ball player like Redick than to "help" the second unit.

So far, I think my favorite part of Milos' game is that he isn't a ballhog. He's truly pass-first, he doesn't hold the ball for an eternity, he doesn't dribble the air out of the ball. It's how I always hoped CP3 would play on offense if he wasn't going to be aggressive in looking to score.

An unselfish PG can keep other players heads in the game to the point that passing to the open man becomes contagious.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

Eye test shows knockdown shooter stroke.

But only shooting 38.8/35/88.

Even with time lost to injury, he gets almost 25 minutes per game.

Is he the best on the team at running the offense?

Or is he mostly spelling other players?

The man still needs to get acclimated to NBA speed. Also he aint no spry young'en himself.

At this point, looks like his ceiling is 7th man, court general of the 2nd unit who can space the floor and make passes.

Not a bad thing at all for 6.3 mil a year.

I wonder how a Milos/Boban 2nd unit would do in extended mins. Offensively should be great or will their defense be too atrocious for playing together too long.

I like Milo a lot! He’s a pure pg, great passer and good shooter. However, athleticism/speed is something he lacks greatly. He’s slow, can hardly beat defenders off the dribble, and handles the rock like a 58 year old. He’s also a lackluster defender, but a good player nonetheless.

The turnovers are surprisingly high, and on D I'm afraid he can't keep up with most opposing NBA starters. But across from an ace defender like Pat Bev, maybe it'll work.

It's definitely taking him some getting used to being in the NBA and I'm afraid he's only a back-of-the-rotation player, but I don't want to cement his ceiling just yet. As it turns out, like your eye test says, he's a pretty good spot-up 3-point shooter, and he's finding his spaces.

https://hoopshabit.com/2018/02/27/los-angeles-clippers-milos-teodosic-getting-shot-back/

Teodosic made four of 12 shots in his two October games, and his accuracy did not improve when he returned in December. Teodosic shot just 34.1 percent from the floor in nine December games, and his true shooting percentage was an abysmal 46 percent.

While his shooting display in 2017 was concerning, Milos has turned it around since the start of 2018. He knocked down a solid 37.7 percent of his triples in January, and had converted 39.3 percent of his shots from deep in February prior to Tuesday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. His true shooting percentage has also jumped from that miserable 46 percent mark (close to the bottom of the league) to an above-average 57.1 percent clip since the new year.

Milos will look even better if we get a real coach with a real offensive system who can utilize his full skill set. We should consider hiring his old coach from CSKA, Dimitris Itoudis.
