Preseason Game thread #5: Magic @ Spurs

Leonard is like 80% of Spurs team. They are lottery team without him

I definitely know Kawhi's massive impact with the Spurs. I follow them too. I just had to correct the comment that the Spurs were playing their 3rd string the majority of the game against us. They did not do that.

Tbh i expect Spurs to have massive drop in wins this year. They simply don't have powerfire to face Warriors, Rockets or OKC. It' still beyond me that they didn't try to get better PG in offseason or during last season by using picks ( or Aldrige , or both ). Somebody like Dragić or Bledsoe would transform them back into top tear contender.
I'm looking at their roster and they really don't have much. Gasol is flat out old, Rudy Gay comming off injury, Mills can shoot you in and out of a game, Danny Green is one trick pony and i don't expect Murray to have break out year, but it looks like he is their only hope in terms of youth movment.

What are you talking about? In the reg season they beat the warriors 2-1 and in the playoffs were blowing out the warriors till Kawhi went down. They can definitely beat the warriors

lol no. No team in the league has enough talent to win 4 out of 7 in the postseason, when the games actually matter, against the Warriors. Kawhi and the Pop system are really good, but they aren't good enough to knock that juggernaut out of the playoffs.

Agreed. The Gasol and Mills contracts were an absolute head scratcher to me. They did try to improve their PG situation but just did not have the assets to land Goran or Bledsoe. Rudy Gay was their best signing and he will be a question mark all year on whether he can recover from that gruesome injury he had last year. That Aldridge situation will be interesting to watch.

For me it's not really criticism for Fournier... it's criticism for the coach. Fournier is a good player, but asking him to setup the offense as much as we did for most of the year was a mistake as it was damaging to everybody, including himself.

It didnt help that we had Vuc, Ibaka, Biz clogging the paint along with Elf and AG being poor 3pt shooters, spacing was awful and brings too much pressure on Evan. We downgraded in size, shifted more to a perimeter oriented game with the addition of speed, quickness, agility, and spacing, although our 3pt shooting is still among or perhaps the worst in the league. The games are more interesting now atleast, last year was brutal to watch, we need a reprieve for watching some ugly basketball.

Wait Vuc clogs the paint? I thought you people complained about him playing in the mid range area too much? Which is it?

Some people mention that, I am not one of them. I am referring to the decision this team made last year to a trade wing player for a PF (Ibaka) then signing another big man (Biz), and run a 3 big man rotation of Vuc/Ibaka/Biz, that caused some clogging of the paint, it took away spacing and driving lanes outside the paint, even despite Ibaka being able to hit the 3, it made us slower, less able to be effective in the perimter and stiffled dribble penetration. Now that we downsized and are more perimeter oriented that has made the offense look smoother.

I think they were banking on Ibaka becoming a consistent option on offense which he couldn't be. Playing alongside Westbrook and Durant and earlier Harden opened up a lot for him.
