While there's truth to that, it's also a bit unfair to him. He's typically pitched well for 6 innings and is usually called upon on short rest. At the same time, tonight he had plenty of rest and came up short of his normal standards. As Molly Knight noted, not even Bumgarner has been called to pitch on short rest except for a Game 7 in the World Series.
There's also been concerned expressed by pundits that he is too amped to start a game, which leads to him burning himself out earlier than normal. I actually see that too.
No way.
He’s 29 years old and has A TON of postseason experience. A TON! He’s been getting smacked in the postseason since Carlos Ruiz took him yard in the 09 NLCS. He’s been in the postseason 7 times and only missed it 3 times in his career. How is he too amped to start games at this point? The hell is he amped for?
And look at where we are. We’re saying one of the most dominant regular season starters EVER “pitches well for 6 innings.”
He’s a $215 million man and if I wasn’t born yesterday, after he makes roughly $150 million of that, he’s going to ask for another $215 million deal (or more) to finish his career. Hes had rest. Personal catchers. He’s had the cache to ask the FO to trade people. He’s had my and your excuses. It’s about time he did us one solid. It’s about time he showed up to the park not amped, with all of his pitches, get into the 8th inning, and shut a quality playoff lineup down. Oh and it’s also time he does it twice in a row for a change.
I put Bum, Schilling, Beckett on the mound in October, you expect excellence.
You put Kershaw on the mound, you expect poor to solid and an excuse.
Believe you me, I love this guy. I have friends who would love to see me saying this given how much I’ve had his back in the past but I can do it no longer. But it’s time for some tough love.
Get the job done. No excuses.
