Kershaw's Postseason

Post#681 » by Ranma » Sun Oct 15, 2017 4:11 am

Quake Griffin wrote:Because he’s never at his best in October.

While there's truth to that, it's also a bit unfair to him. He's typically pitched well for 6 innings and is usually called upon on short rest. At the same time, tonight he had plenty of rest and came up short of his normal standards. As Molly Knight noted, not even Bumgarner has been called to pitch on short rest except for a Game 7 in the World Series.

There's also been concern expressed by pundits that he is too amped to start a game, which leads to him burning himself out earlier than normal. I actually see that too.

Kershaw's Stubbornness

Post#683 » by Ranma » Sun Oct 15, 2017 4:16 am

I don't like agreeing with Jerry Hairston, Jr. but he just pointed out on SportsNet LA how Clayton Kershaw can be stubborn in the pitches he wants to throw, which is something I've been saying for a while now. Case in point, why not pitch high and inside to Anthony Rizzo with him crowding the plate?

Quake Griffin wrote:Glad to hear Kershaw say he doesn’t hold a grudge against the Cubs. I want this team to be strictly business, not caught up in “revenge.” We ARE the better team and I hope we believe that and play with that kind of confidence.

Also glad he acknowledged that people talk about his postseason failures but understands he’s had some success in the postseason and thatvthose are times he focuses on.

Did not know Joe ‘KnowitAll’ Maddon said he thinks his team matches up well with us.

No way.

He’s 29 years old and has A TON of postseason experience. A TON! He’s been getting smacked in the postseason since Carlos Ruiz took him yard in the 09 NLCS. He’s been in the postseason 7 times and only missed it 3 times in his career. How is he too amped to start games at this point? The hell is he amped for?

And look at where we are. We’re saying one of the most dominant regular season starters EVER “pitches well for 6 innings.”

He’s a $215 million man and if I wasn’t born yesterday, after he makes roughly $150 million of that, he’s going to ask for another $215 million deal (or more) to finish his career. Hes had rest. Personal catchers. He’s had the cache to ask the FO to trade people. He’s had my and your excuses. It’s about time he did us one solid. It’s about time he showed up to the park not amped, with all of his pitches, get into the 8th inning, and shut a quality playoff lineup down. Oh and it’s also time he does it twice in a row for a change.

I put Bum, Schilling, Beckett on the mound in October, you expect excellence.

You put Kershaw on the mound, you expect poor to solid and an excuse.

Believe you me, I love this guy. I have friends who would love to see me saying this given how much I’ve had his back in the past but I can do it no longer. But it’s time for some tough love.

Get the job done. No excuses.

Just want to state that for as much **** as I've given Dave Roberts, I thought he did a great job last night steering us to victory.

Yanking Kershaw early (thank you).
Cingrani, then Maeda, then Morrow, then Watson, then Kenley.

Btw...is Maeda's stuff just suited for the bullpen overall? As in should we just throw him there for the rest of his career as a Dodger?

His velo is up a tick higher. Hitters can't really eliminate pitches or a side of the plate since he has so much stuff too.
If we moved him to the pen next year, he'd never hit his incentives. His contract would stay cheap as hell and could be a force as a setup man or setup to the setup man. My guess is he or his agent would throw a huge fit about it.

Yeah, sticking with Kershaw against Rizzo would have been a dissaster... Rizzo was salivating for that one, and Kershaw wouldn't have wanted to pitch out to him... As much as it may ding Kershaw's legacy a little (more), it was a good call pulling him.

does his stuff work better as a bullpen arm? YES.

would he want the job? NO.

does he have a choice? HAHA HELL NO. he is under a contract, we can use him however the hell we want to.

but... is that the right thing to do or even a smart thing to do? if we are willing to use him as a setup man, Maeda's value would be much higher by trading him and his fantastic contract to a small market team on a budget.

on the other hand, if you look at it strictly as a business move, we can do anything with him and he signed that deal willingly.
ehhhhh f it.

I beg the differ from these so called experts. try to steal second, force Jon Lester to throw to first. if he makes one error there, his psych will be destroyed. even if he makes 1, 2, 3 outs there with throws to first before, is meaningless as long as he throws 1 error. that will unravel him. try him and try him hard.

it's sorta funny to see Jon Jay in Cubs uni. he was such a disappointment in Cardinal red, he has always been a guy who can hit, and in early part of his career, can get on base but never able to hit with any power despite hitting close to .300 BA always, his OPS was never close to .800. his OBP this season has been incredible but still not worried cause he has lost his speed and can't steal bases like he used to.
