538 simulation projects the Magic to win 37 games

Post#1 » by drsd » Sun Oct 15, 2017 9:41 am

The 538 simulation projects the Magic to win 37 games and to finish ninth in the Eastern Conference, three games behind eighth-place Miami Heat. The projection gives the Magic a 48 percent chance of making the Playoffs.

Looking at the 538 link is interesting in itself, for the math geeks:

For me frankly this is spot on. I fully see the Magic in the 37-wins range plus or minus 3 games (I would "bet it all" on a 34-41 win season).

I had them at 37-45 as well before training camp.

According to this, 8 of the 9 best teams in the NBA are in the West. Yikes lol. If the Magic can hang around 37 wins they'll be solidly in the mix for a playoff spot.

Unfortunately that's exactly where I see the magic finishing as well finishing right at that 9th spot and just missing the playoffs. The only thing that can change that is injuries to other teams. Or someone really having a huge breakout year for us.

aside of topic I hope this system is going to be changed in the future its laughable such weak teams can make it in the east ...and by changing system I actually hope owners in the east will actually start caring to build better teams instead of pretending they do something while hoping for the best

I think the 76ers are rapidly becoming the most overrated team in the NBA. They have a couple of guys that have looked nice in preseason, and they've been crowned as the next super team. 82 games is a long season, especially against teams that are running their starters and actually playing defense.

I was surprised they had them just squeaking in above us. I was anticipating an overblown 6th seed or something--like last season.

I think 37 wins would be a step in the right direction for us. Whether we sneak into the playoffs or just miss it, that will be a good move forward for us.

37 is right where I see this team. No mans land. Not good enough to be a playoff team, not bad enough to get a high draft pick. The worst place this team could be. Thanks Hennigan.

They are no superteam but they are making the playoffs.

Does not matter what the W-L column says. Just play HARD EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!

Make each game a grind!

Yeah I'm with you on this. Play our talent, get better, play hard. Hopefully that means wins, but at the very least I want to see constant improvement all year.

37 sounds reasonable.

Of course, we could win like 25. Hard to tell right now. If Simmons and Gordon play like they did in the preseason, we might have something here.

Tough call.

From what I've seen, Simmons adds a decent amount to this team. A powerful 3 who can get to the basket, draw fouls and make an outside shot. And a very tough defender who doesn't back down from anyone. Aaron Gordon seems to have taken a step up in offensive game. Which is a big deal for this team. And Isaac looks like he can be an impact defender from day one, and occasionally contribute offensively.

I still saw signs of an offense that will stagnate a lot and be frustrating to watch. But that was also lineups that probably will never see the light of day in the regular season.

So 29 last season. The improvements are there but they aren't huge. I'd say 37 wins is at the top end of where we could wind up.

The YES has it in a commanding one-vote advantage.

I think they make the playoff's if Embiid can play atleast 60 games. In fact if he does, I predict he will be the MVP of the league.

After the Magic, the 76'ers are the second team I'm interested in watching.

I read this as that you came to the Magic board to say you are excited about the Sixers. Is that not better placed with Philly fans?

There was a comment about the 76'ers previously and with JJ going there, he will always be relevant for me. I was a season ticket holder to the Magic for over 15 years and have many magic connections with other teams. Didn't know that was a feaux pas.
