Grizz gonna waive or trade Wade Baldwin IV today - Should we be interested?

Post#1 » by Kilo » Mon Oct 16, 2017 3:16 pm

I know a few folks here liked him in the draft last year (Ellenson draft) and we could use a prospect point guard. However if he's fallen so fast/hard in Memphis to be waiver material is he fatally flawed?

We have an open roster spot, currently carrying 14 players - probably cost a couple of second rounders - one to Memphis, and another to a third team with cap space to take on the cap hit as we don't have any players to trade back that Memphis would then waive instead to make salaries work.

We should absolutely be interested. How much interest we should have is debatable, but he was easily one of the top physical talents in the draft, and SVG has a knack for getting the most out his his PG's, so I say go for it.

The time to claim a reclamation project is after they are waived, not before.

I wouldn't say the griz bailing on him is the kiss of death, but it's certainly a red flag. They have 2 vet pg's in front of him, but you usually don't see a first rounder just cut. I haven't heard any off court issues with him though.

So he's been waived, should definitely look into it. Kind of a stash away project that could be a rotation player for us down the road.

If he has been waived, means he was shopped for a second and nobody bit. Also means he'll likely be claimed by some team with cap space - PHX should be all over it with Knight lost for the year.

It was one season, so someone will take a look. It was a bad season that's certain. Only got in 33 games, shot 31% overall and 14% on 3s!? His FT % was pretty good, but I didn't dig any deeper as it has to be a small sample. He does have a pretty good physical profile.

Memphis isn't really a shining beacon for picking great draft picks *cough* Hasheem*

But he's most likely going to find a new home. He's not done yet.

Nope, weak handle and can't finish at the rim because he isn't a 1 foot leaper.

Wouldn't be looking at this kid if we'd drafted Mitchell to back up both guard spots for a year or so!

I fear that he is the one we're all gonna look back on and say ****!

Not Winslow, not Booker, not another Baldwin.

Point guard potential is the main reason I wanted Donovan Mitchell. Just in case Reggie Jackson flopped again i wanted a talented guard that could also play pg like Mitchell did successfully at Lousiville.

That being said, Mitchell is a lost star talent, slipped thru the hands of SVG.

Now lets move on to Marcus Smart... get him from Boston next year. Hes restricted now, they are about to lose him like they lost AB.

Marcus Smart at Pg as a big defensive guard would be a nice pivot move from SVG or whoever replaces SVG.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

As Pistons fans complain about Reggies shooting, Smart also likes to chuck the ball with a 36% FG who likes to chuck 4 threes per game at a 28% average. Also, Smart only shoots 3 less balls per game now than Reggie. Imagine how many more shots he would chuck as a starter! I do like Smart as a backup, but not at the price range he will be seeking. He would be roasted horribly on this team as a starter.

Yeah good defender but completely stupid to his own offensive shortcomings

Smart would need to be surrounded by excellent shooters otherwise he's a major liability

We don't have the talent to hide him offensively

I`d rather give a chance to Jordan Adams (if he is healthy) who was cut last season by Memphis because of injuries and not because he couldn`t play or had other issues.

Last time we gave an injured guy a chance was Middleton and it worked nicelly for Milwaukee...
