It's not that his slider is bad, it's that he has never thrown it for strikes, he relied on getting guys to swing at it. They've figured out not to.
Doesn't change the fact that I feel like taking a sledgehammer to his face, but still

I can't pass up the chance to spend a quarter+ of my day watching baseball. I guess if the second game's ugly I'll drink more heavily.
And at least it's Harang pitching against the Cubs later.

What the lineup card of a GOOD manager looks like at the end of a close game:
D Eckstein SS
c-A Kennedy PH
S Taguchi CF
d-C Duncan PH
A Pujols 1B
J Encarnacion RF
S Rolen 3B
R Ludwick LF
Y Molina C
A Miles 2B
B Thompson P
B Falkenborg P
a-S Schumaker PH
T Percival P
b-J Edmonds PH
R Springer P
When has Yost ever pinch hit for his 1 and 2 hitters to create a more favorable matchup? Here is the way in which the choice to do so in the bottom of the ninth played out for the Hall of Fame manager-
Francisco Cordero pitching for Milwaukee
F Cordero relieved D Turnbow.
A Kennedy hit for D Eckstein.
A Kennedy fouled out to third.
C Duncan hit for S Taguchi.
C Duncan doubled to left.
A Pujols singled to center, C Duncan scored.
J Encarnacion grounded into fielder's choice to third, A Pujols out at second.
S Rolen doubled to left, J Encarnacion scored.
R Ludwick singled to left, S Rolen scored.
Ned Yost would never try something like this, because Taguchi was 2 for 4 in the game, and because Duncan plays left field (Taguchi plays center) and Kennedy plays 2nd (Eckstein plays SS). The thought would never even cross his mind that it doesn't matter how mismatched his defense is in the last inning of a game if his team isn't able to accomplish something offensively.
Look, I'm not saying that Yost should try this exact move in the late innings of every game we are trailing (but are within striking distance), mostly because the Brewers personnel is a lot different. My only real point is just that good situational management takes creativity, and creativity is something I hardly ever see from Yost in these spots.

I'm not trying to pin this loss on Yost at all. As you can see, I'm just pointing out one of (what I consider to be) Yost's shortcomings.

I don't think it takes a Hall of Famer to pinch hit for David Eckstein against a dominant RHP. And wasn't La Russa ejected by that point? I guess you could argue his bench coach would follow his philosophies.
If anything, Yost's won some games lately with his pinch-hitting choices, like Graffanino in for Weeks last week and getting some good hits out of Mench. Some of his lineups confuse me sometimes, but I guess they've got a lot of cold hitters lately.

Hehe. I feel a bit silly for forgetting that. But I still stand by my point, which is-
good situational management takes creativity, and creativity is something I hardly ever see from Yost in these spots.
And by the way, pinch hitting for Eckstein wasn't the move that worked out for the Cards.

I'll agree with that. Especially on the road, it wouldn't even piss me off too much if they did something crazy like pinch-hit Gallardo. They might as well try just about anything to snap out of it, or it'll be a disappointing fall if they don't figure something out in the next couple of months.
What'd you think of Parra's first start? I was surprised he threw as many balls as he did, and it was a letdown when Braun's error gave back the 2 runs Parra had just knocked in. But I guess for the first major league game from the 6th (or 7th counting Sheets) starter, it was pretty solid. He definitely gave them a chance.

Now that might be going too far

I was quite impressed with Parra, I really had a bad feeling that he was going to get roughed up in this game. Things could have gotten out of hand in the third after Braun's error, but he was able to keep his composure. The most encouraging thing about his start for me was probably that he was able to pitch 6 complete innings while keeping his pitch count under 100 (he finished at 92).
