I would love that.

Why? Can we please hire someone with coaching experience this time?

As much as I would like Nash to be our HC (favourite player of all time), I do think we're at a critical stage in our rebuild where we really need someone with legitimate coaching credentials and/or experience.

Suns need a real head coach

or an assistant that has PROVEN they have earned it.

Hornacek was only around a few years
Hunter - next
Watson - really didn't prove anything

When the extended Watson they didn't even interview anybody like Bickerstaff Jr, Fizdale, and other guys. Get a guy that has been an assistant, that has been a grinder in this league and earned stripes being in the second chair.

Hell Longarbardi has earned some stripes

no more rookie HCs unless they have 6, 8 10 years on the bench as an assistant

Quite a few people have mentioned Blatt, even non Suns fans. I brought him up pretty early as perhaps a good option, but didn't know his history. But reading on it since, it's impressive.

I think Messina should be the guy targetted initially. He has a pedigree the youngsters would have to respect, and I think he would force everyone to understand good v. bad shots and adapt to playing team ball. That said, it would probably have to be after the season and with a boatload of money.

Lookin' for a head coach

Post#8 » by lilfishi22 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 4:25 am

Now that Watson is gone    we need a new head coach

Jay Triano has already been named interim HC so I assume his name will be in the hat for when we are looking for a permanent HC.

Couple other names have been discussed in the other threads like Messina, Pitino, Longabardi and so on. Would be good to get everyone's thoughts on who we should be targeting.

Messina is by far the best candidate in my books. He has the credentials (4x Euroleague cup champion, 2x Euroleague COY, considered one of the GOAT European coaches) and the experience (17 seasons in Euroleague, 3 seasons as assist coach under HOF Pops).

The only thing against him in my view is that he's always been a winner and I'm not sure he would want to leave a great winning situation in SA for a horse doo-doo that is the current Phoenix Suns

Sooo who ya got??

Would have loved it if the FO had fired the entire coaching staff...well? Watson, Triano and Corbin....Then named Jared Dudley & James Jones as co-interim head coaches for the rest of '17-'18 ...trying something wildly different (why the **** not?) ...knowing (almost for sure) an entirely new staff will be coming in after the season...WTF!

...But! We all know what is going to happen instead- Triano/Corbin will pull the **** out of the fire...they'll get back some respectability...win 24-28 games...and then Triano will get named permanent HC (he's HC material for cheap) ...or worse, they'll do a PR/sales hire and bring in Majerle or Nash. ...meh

the team needs proven Head Coaching talent, especially at this low point!

"I know this is a bold statement. If I was running a team and had a head coaching opening. The first call would be to Becky Hammon,” former Brooklyn Nets assistant general manager Bobby Marks said last summer. “Hammon is as qualified as any current assistant coach in the NBA. She is paying her dues and working from the bottom up.”

But Messina and Pitino are the 2 in my top tier. Im researching coaches right now, but currently any other name is at least 2-3 tiers lower than those two.

Lionel Hollins would whip some sense into these young-uns.

Screw it, let's find the most pissed off fan on this board to become the new coach of this team.

No more coddling, aqua yoga, Sanskrit reading, baton twirling, or whatever new age team bonding activity was the flavor of the week under zen master Watson.

Let's whip some sense into the heads of these entitled brats and create some accountability.

Had a look at the CVs of the names mentioned and they look good to me especially Messina, Pitino, Blatt.

Im throwing Stackhouse's name into the mix as well.

Jerry Stackhouse, Raptors 905 head coach (D-League)
Before his playing career was even over, Stackhouse was providing spot duty as a de facto player development coach -- you could find him in 2011 at the Heat's facility working with Dwyane Wade on his post game. But it's one thing to get on the floor with a teammate, and another to build the kind of portfolio that makes a successful NBA head coach.

Those who have watched Stackhouse over the past two seasons, first on the Raptors' staff and then as the head coach of their D-League team, say he is doing all the right things. In addition to the respect he commands from players, Stackhouse, an 18-year former pro, has demonstrated a serious desire to learn the craft. He took USA Select teams abroad, attended Tim Grgurich's much-admired coaching camp, mentored fellow Kinston, North Carolina, native Brandon Ingram, and has become a devoted cinephile who spends endless sessions poring over film.

This season, Stackhouse's 905 squad has posted the best record in the D-League's Eastern Conference. Like every coach with big aspirations, he arrived with ambitious ideas that he has learned to adjust on the fly. He's a grinder who Raptors insiders say often holds twice daily practices, but he also enjoys the creative tasks of finding shots for guys. All the while, he continues to hone his skills as a game manager and messenger and seeks out advice from Dwane Casey and other vets of the trade. The league has taken notice of Stackhouse's maturation and success, and several execs expect he'll be on the interview circuit before long.

It would be a very Sarver move to appoint Majerle.

Id give Stackhouse, messina, and maybe a guy like sam Cassell interviews but it would be next spring. I'd wait until then because you just don't know if some good college coach looks to make the jump (say a guy like Tom Isso) or current head coach becomes available. I feel like they rushed the Watson hire and they should avoid that this year. Ride this out and try not to be an embarrassment and pick top 5 again and get the hire right next spring.
