Who do you think are the best head coaching candidates?

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 4:52 am

Obviously this has to do with the Suns predicament, but I am curious to see other's thoughts. There are some names that have been brought up already, like..

Ettore Messina
David Blatt
Igor Kokoskov
Jay Larranaga
Melvin Hunt
Rick Pitino (yeah I know)
Jay Wright

Others who have been mentioned on the forum or in articles

Darvin Ham
Brent Barry
Jerry Stackhouse
Chris Fleming
James Borrego
Alex Jensen
Jarron Collins
Tony Bennet
Stephen Silas
Monty Williams

Ettore Messina is def #1 for me. Was already well renowned overseas before he ever got to the NBA but now with all the experience coaching besides Pop he should be under heavy demand.

I wanted the Raps to fire Casey and hire him just this past offseason

Jerry Stackhouse. I know he ex player but he is earning his stripes not just handed a job. Big part of norman powell development as a 2nd round pick to starter on a playoff team

He lead raptors 905 to d league championship last year . Amazing passing and defense the team had . Very strict. No player would even have guts to challenge him lol

David blatt too

David Blatt for sure. He's a good system guy, he'll get some structure in place.

ettore messina failed terribly during his latest tenure in cska moscow hence he stepped back and took a lesser role. i would like to say david blatt is a solid candidate to make a comeback to the nba.

I would still like to see Blatt have a shot where he can actually run his system. But if there was one guy I could pick from that list, all day everyday Im going Tony Bennett. The dude is just a flat out amazing coach. Virginia has no business competing with the likes of Duke/UNC and the other beasts in the ACC. But every single year Virginia just causes havoc. I think he could step into the NBA and command respect and coach up some D really quick.

Side note: He is actually probably the perfect coach for PHX right now and all those young guys. But no way that dude is leaving Virginia.

Or Hornacek...

Blatt or Messina would be a very good choice IMO.

Igor Kokoškov - was in Phoenix before and did a great job leading Slovenia to gold medal in this years Eurobasket.

I like Clifford for the most part, but Tony Bennett is someone I've thought about a fair bit as a potential replacement. He has a strong connection to the team and city. The only downside to potentially hiring him would be losing Stephen Silas. He's earned a shot at a head coaching job. Both of them would be great targets for the Suns.

Messina in the 1st tier of realistic names

Brent Barry in the 2nd tier in plausible names.

Barry imo should get more hype in these positions. He literally comes from a family tree of good shooting. I know it doesn't translate into coaching acumen but he's the closest thing to pre-GS Steve Kerr in terms of resume.

Bob Beyer is one. I know the Pistons took a giant step back last year but he seems to build rapport with young players easily and is responsible for some development.
