Re: Spirit of Atlanta
This feels like a Koonin move.
And it's mad brilliant.
And it's mad brilliant.
The honor is one typically reserved for a retiring player, coach or owner. Reed, however, has been deeply involved with the organization throughout his tenure.
Most recently, Reed led months-long negotiations with the team for $192.5 million deal with the team – including $142 million in taxpayer dollars – to overhaul Philips Arena.
The deal also extended the team’s lease at the arena through 2046.
“This is not a political statement,” Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said. “This is about recognizing a man who has done so much for our community.”
Koonin called Reed a trusted partner not only during arena negotiations but also as the team and its partners forge their plans for downtown redevelopment around Philips Arena.

Re: Spirit of Atlanta
It's bs. Give us $150 million dollars and will hang your name from the rafters. Sick. Not to get all political but.....I don't like Kasim. I"ll just leave it at that. Having his name in the rafters for the next few years (until they realize he legacy sucks) is bogus.

The jersey will be displayed in a planned “community area” within the arena that will highlight the team’s Atlanta history and service in the city.
Does it help if the jersey is tucked away in a corner of the facility no one will care to visit?

I don't like or dislike the guy but I do hate this move. This is what non-winning franchises do. Put a plaque up or something (which can be moved to a low-traffic area when he's out of office). Don't hang his name in the rafters for folks to look up thinking, "Uh, Reed? When'd he play for Atlanta?" or "Bwahaha, Hawks're so bad they gotta retire the Mayor's nimber!!"
Just a bad look for everyone not named Kasim Reed.

The notion that Reed had some heavy influence on keeping the Hawks in the city is silly IMHO and makes it sound like it was some selfless pursuit on his part. He'd just lost the Barves, no way he could lose the Hawks too. He had no choice for his own sake.
The honor being off to the side in a "community area" makes me feel better I guess. *grumble, grumble*

C-Viv is also amused by this token act of gratitude.
On a lighter note, another Hawks owner will be on TV this week?
The Spanx lady, right?

Blakely's either trying to poach ideas for new amenities at Phillips...or trying to find an ice cream shop she can post Itzler as "manager".

I can live with it there in a 'community area', but not a fan of the idea.

I'm just happy the Kasim thing isn't tonight so i don't have to be there. It'll be interesting to see how fans react. If anyone boos he'll get on the mic and tell everyone to go to hell for not recognizing his genius.

Definitely looks like spud will 'fit' right in with the A team. Just don't let him near the sky team again. You remember a few years ago
