Re: Around the league 2017-2018
So removing the Phoenix Suns anomaly... this has been Lonzo's stats to start the year.
Mins..Pts...Reb...Ast...FGM...FGA......3PM....3PA
29.....3......9.....4......1........6........1........3
36.....8......8.....13.....3.......13........0........5
39.....6......8.....6......2.......11........0........5
31.....5......7.....6......2.......7.........1........4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
33.7...5.5....8....7.2....2......9.2......0.5.....4.2
21% - Field goal percentage
11% - 3 point shooting percentage
Time for daddy to keep his mouth shut I think. Lonzo has been given a massive pass because of that Phoenix game. 80% of his NBA games so far have been underwhelming from a shooting and scoring perspective... and it's not even an anomaly as he couldn't shoot a lick against Summer League and Pre-season opponents either.

Been saying it for weeks. Heck months for that matter. He passes the ball and sees the floor very well, but eventually he will have to put the ball in the basket.
Too bad he can't do that. If you shoot 3s that bad, just stop shooting them.....course then he would never get a shot up.
People get on Simmons about his lack of shooting from outside. I would much prefer Simmons never take a 3 than take it at an 11% clip.
When you shoot that badly and insist you keep shooting it knowing you only hit at 11%, Lonzo is basically ok with creating an 4 additional turnovers a game... because that's literally what it is.

Maybe we can offer a future second for Lonzo so the Ball supporters here can get the Simmons/Ball pairing they've been pining for, though its true I'm not sure how much time Simmons will be playing with our Summer League unit in future.

Only way Lonzo's road to stardom makes sense if he also has been playing with a shoulder injury.
Bring down ball. Pass pass.
Rebound, lead pass.
Just switch those PnR like how they defended MCW and he'll be useless out there. We'll much more useless i mean.

Lonzo averages 5.5ppg on non-suns teams.

How many of Lonzo's 5 points and 6 assists were "winning plays" tonight?

Re: Around the league 2017-2018
I think we're giving Lonzo too long of a leash here when it comes to his scoring inadequacies just because he's a gifted passer.
First, his shot is broken. He looks like he's never shot a basketball before in his life. It's been so bad to the point where it's warping our offense. Team's are clogging up the paint and making it difficult for our bigs to operate in the low-post. The entry pass ends up heavily contested and Lonzo is either forced to shoot or swing it to the perimeter (which is useless if the receiver is Ingram). Also, whenever they run a pick & roll, Lonzo's man goes under the screen, basically daring him to shoot. But he clanks it (only 22% success rate, yikes).
Second, he doesn't finish well at the rim. He is very capable of getting a step on his man, but he's very uncoordinated. He has a hard time gathering the ball when he drives. He either exposes the ball too much, leading to a strip or to compensate for his lack of athleticism, he has to contort his body in a way that makes easy layups awkward and difficult (only 38% success rate at the rim). You can tell he realizes this is a problem. When the big sets a good pick, he gets some of the most open looks to the basket, but he still passes it out to the big (at the top of the key) instead of going for a high percentage layup. He'd rather make the big shoot a bad shot then risk the chance of getting blocked at the rim.
The second will ultimately come with more experience, but its definitely hurt by problem #1. So ultimately, he is going to have to fix that shot. Doesn't matter if he's used to it, don't let the guy think everything is okay just because he's done it all his life. It's horrific and somebody on the squad needs to convince him. The rest of the team shouldn't be forced to compensate for his weaknesses and step out of their roles to become good shooters/great athletes just because Ball can pass. In the half-court, Ball doesn't really do anything that makes their lives easier other than the occasional pick & roll which is easily figured out. If anything, it's even more difficult for them to score.

I love how the guys who wanted Ball or Jackson have no problem killing Fultz even though he's injured but the awful starts of Ball and Jackson are seemingly irrelevant.

Yea, you don't "fix" that shot. He's stuck with it for life. That was the main reason I was unconditionally against taking him top 5. If it was a form that is easy to tweak, like Fultz's form before whatever happened to him, then he would have been easily a top five pick in my mind. Instead he has a stroke that is easily contested.

I'm hoping its his passing which is the only contagious thing; I would hate for any of our players to catch a dose of his turnovers or shooting when we play them in mid-November.
Jokes aside I do feel sorry for him though; I think he's just in way over his head - he seems like a good kid, just been picked too high in the draft and has a lot of hoopla with the Lakers and his Dad.

Couldn't agree more. The Fultz killing on this forum has had me staying away the past few days.

You can’t improve your percentage if you don’t shoot. I didn’t watch this last game, but just in general, Lonzo HAS to shoot the 3 to maximize his game, and if he isn’t hitting them now the thought is that he will start hitting them.

Alot of factors going into the Suns, but they have won 2 straight since sending Josh Jackson to the bench.
Ball has been pretty awful, no way to get around that, he got benched at the end of that last game. The ego of the Lakers won't let them send Ball to the bench, even if that's where he needs to be at the moment.
