Watched War for the Planet of the Apes. Really enjoyed it. Probably the best CGI I've ever seen.

Re: 2017 TV/Movie/Book Thread with Spoilers
As someone who generally likes musicals, I finally saw La La Land. And I'm honestly trying to figure out what was so great about it. This obsession with making actors/actresses who can't sing do the main musical numbers just for the sake of "being more authentic" is weird. Was more impressed by the choreography and dance numbers than I was by any of the vocals.

For me it was more about the music itself (not specifically the singing) and the direction and art direction. That and I loved that final 15-20 minute Epliogue.

Is ep 7 of Stranger Things that bad? I watched up to 5 last night and it's been great so far.

We were getting through them pretty great until we hit Ep 7 last night. All of a sudden my wife wanted to get to bed early.
It was grossly out of place and didn't belong with the rest of the series. Hoping to finish 8 and 9 tonight, though finishing it late on Halloween seems right too.

I'll keep an open mind going in but it sucks to hear that about a series which gets just about everything else right.

It's not bad like unwatchable bad. It's just that the previous episode ends on a cliffhanger basically building to the climax of the entire season and then you get completely taken away from that main story for a whole episode. Luckily the binge watching format makes it a much more temporary nuisance.

So did the Orville just get this left over episode from Black Mirror?

Consider it character development for El. Its not an awful episode; it just doesn't belong with the rest of the show and is a little peculiar.
I really hope there isn't a spinoff for the other character in this episode.

I like how you asked that as if other people were watching The Orville.

When I thought it was a comedy, I thought it had a lot of potential

I would actually gladly watch if it were like the last episode. There really is no identity with the show. Each episode is wildly different in tone. Kind of a weird way to present a show, and nearly assuring its destruction.

I wonder how all of these people shooting at each other seem to have a near unlimited supply of ammunition?

It's entertainment man. You can come up with something for every piece of fiction in history. Sometimes you just gotta sit back and enjoy something for what it is. I prefer an episode like this vs some sort of exposition filled hour where they discover some ammunition factory and stock up. They could do it but it doesn't really move the story forward and certainly wouldn't be entertaining.

I was just pondering today how the streaming/binge, released-all-at-once format allows for a show like ST to be structured differently. I think it makes occasionally deviating from the overarching story much easier.

I enjoy it but it does need to figure out what it is

Really? It took you till this season to realize this? I couldn't get through the pilot because every situation was so bumfack (Please Use More Appropriate Word). I can't stand shows like that. If someone tells me they like the walking dead, I think a little less of them.
