Here's my hopeful guess why Bill made the deal:
The Patriots really like a QB in this draft that will likely get picked in the high second round, and they didn't want to pay Jimmy G. So they moved him for the pick and will sign a stop-gap backup for now. Brady will play one or two more years, and then the kid will get his chance.
OT: Patriots Trade Jimmy Garoppolo to 49ers for a 2nd Rnd – (Currently no Backup QB)

Awful trade.
Elite QBs don’t grow on trees.
Jimmy was the absolute perfect player to take over as Brady’s career is coming to an end.

There no chance not clean. You may have gotten the Browns pick if you gave them back a two something like that. Essentially Bill used up all he could of Jimmy as insurance, he wasn't going to win a Super Bowl, but if Brady went down early Jimmy could have gotten the team through the regular season. After this deadline Jimmy is probably worth a 4th or 5th at most so I am glad he pulled the trigger even though I would have rather had a guy who can tackle someone than a draft pick.
While I would love the Kapernick move just as a big FU to everyone you have to assume that part of this is Hoyer coming back just not at his current salary.

But how are you going to pay him? This was always a fairy tale. Brady has a 22 mil cap hit the next two years. Time to draft the next guy.

They signed old pall Brian Hoyer as Brady's backup....

Good signing IMO....Knows the league and our system...should be an easy fit...
