Thanks Carlisle.

What does this even mean? WE didn't have a pick to take Skal with, West hurt us like ten years ago so who cares, Ibaka got crushed by Dirk in the 2011 WCF and Kanter I don't even know where you are going.

So confused by your post. Especially when you end it by blaming Carlisle?

No, We have. But it was top 7 protected. We should have done with one more young talent, instead of 42 wins and a devastating loss against the Durant-off Thunder.

I enjoy winning games.
Assume I'm Carlise. Is that not the response you would like from him?

Dennis Smith Jr suffers left knee effusion

Post#124 » by fuller4379 » Sat Oct 21, 2017 1:53 pm

Carlisle briefly addressed the Smith question.
"He's got a little swelling; not believed to be serious. He will not travel to Houston [for Saturday's game]. We'll hope he's okay for Monday [against Golden State].
"It doesn't make any sense to rush through the weekend and try to play him tomorrow. He's had a little minor swelling throughout training camp -- it's one of the symptoms of having an ACL [injury] when you go through a higher workload. Doc checked him out, and we think he's going to be fine."

Looks like a pretty slow start for DSJ. I havent seen him play yet, can anyone give me the lowdown on why he's struggling?

Carslie has been having such a tight leash on him that he's playing very tense.

Rick loves JJ Barea (who has played well) and that lack of faith in Smith Jr has hurt him.

I think Carslie needs to realize that developing the young kids like Smith Jr, Noel etc is more important than playing 30 something year old vets to try and win but STILL lose.

Dennis Smith Jr is the future of this franchise. He needs to be given the complete reigns.

I don’t think it has hurt him at all. I also don’t think he’s played bad. He’s actually played really well, especially on a team that isn’t very good overall.

He has made some rookie mistakes but overall he’s doing great for a rookie. You can’t expect this guy to come in and be Steph Curry in his first year. Hell Steph wasn’t even Steph in his first year. It took Steph like 3 years before he reached the level he plays at now. Even a guy like Nash was being boo’d off the court before he figured everything out and became and All Star.

Give him time. The talent is there and he really can’t have a better coach than Carlisle to learn from. Carlisle has a long history of doing great wonders for the career of young guards in the NBA.

Agreed. But certainly, he can learn a lot from JJ and Devin. In particular, he need to learn reading the post defense. Both veterans are very good in converting layup, avoiding block shots and passing out of the post. This area has been the major source of turnovers of Dennis. He can also learn a lot from coach and adjustment made by defensive players among the league. I think he's been doing fine. He's already 10X better than he was in SL. He can average at least 20 a game if he can fix these mistakes. So far, he's been outplayed by both Barea and Harris in that particular area.

But still, you've to give him a lot of credits. Dennis has learnt to run pick-n-roll offense. (He rarely gets 10 assists a game in SL) He's played better man defense (in particular in low post defending bigger players. He's hopeless in SL. But now, no one gets advantages posting him up). He's improved a lot playing man defense. (He's lost his man a lot in SL. He can stay in front of his man most of the time now. He doesn't get completely picked away very often now.) He's shot pretty well. (He's much better than he's in SL shooting-wise.) He'll improve a lot on rebounding, running fast breaks, stealling in paint, playing passing lanes and drawing charging. He's got all the right mentors to learn from. He's already on steep learning curves. He deserves more credits than many of the younger Mavs. He's improved the most among this group. No young player show as much promise on this roster. Not even Barnes and Noel.

I won't blame him not able to beat Rubio at this point. He can learn a lot from that kind of experience. I think he would be very thankful to this kind of failures afterall.

I think the Mavs should focus on his effectiveness around the rim. I think short wingspan makes it difficult to get a shot off against elite defensive PG and C. But wait, Barea's short arm and is indeed even more undersized at 5-10. So I think JJ teach him some hints on creating space and seeing the floor to convert layups and passing out of the post at good rate.

He needs to develop a floater. I’d also like to see him work on his handle and attack more.

Maybe he need a little pump fakes as well. I still remember how often an unathletic Tony Parker score in the paint during his rookie season. For a 2-PG lineups, those smaller guys should hit at least 50% from the rim (drawing free throws included) to be effective. His major turnovers now comes from blocked shots in paint, getting the ball stolen passing out of the post and careless ball-handling at 45 degree of the arc. Creating enough space for himself to convert layups or drawing fouls seems to be the bottleneck to his learning path. I know he struggles to hit wide-open 3s effectively. But those are good looks. I think he's right to take them. We've to increase his effectiveness in the paint first. I think he'll get more confident to shoot from outside once it's fixed.

Steph Curry is another example. It took him 3 years before it all clicked for him. Before that he was known as an underachieving, injury prone player. When they shipped out Monte Ellis there were a lot of Warriors fans that thought Curry should have gone instead. Obviously all those fans were beyond wrong. Not too much different than when Nash was getting boo’d in Dallas before his career really took off. It just takes time for these guys to develop and considering where Dennis is now and how he’s playing if he’s ahead of the curve. Within 3 yeas this guy will be a beast of a PG. I expect the team to add 2 more blue chip players this off season, one through the draft and one through free agency. As the talent level on this team increases and after Dirk retires and moves to the front office we will all see Dennis’ game improve.

This is a good article on Dennis. Makes a good point about ability to stay dialed in during a rough losing season.

I am really surprised Andrei Kirilenko is not one of them.

I’m sure he had the rebounds and assists but points he was really always a 17/7 (pts/rbs) kind of guy.

Not possible. He was 20 when he came into the league.

Ben Simmons is a lock for ROY. Smith is 3rd in scoring and 4th in assists right now.
