This team needed a point guard who doesn’t consider himself the star of the team.

...why? I'd much rather have the 21 year old who has a decent shot at being an allstar some day.

I mean, Mike James has been a nice surprise so far, but whut.

If he gets a guaranteed contract, can we add another 2-way contract?

Yeah but we also have to cut someone from the roster to make that spot then. We are already maxed out at 15 on the roster + max of 2 two-way contracts.

Edit: although there may be some leeway with Brandon Knight who is suppose to be out for the whole season. We might be able to use a Disabled Player Exception

Disabled Player Exception is for when you are over the salary cap and have an injured player ... we are not!

Expanding the roster for a hardship is what you are looking for. That requires you to have four injured players who have or are expected to miss significant time. We only have three (Knight, Williams, Reed) and I don't think the league will give us anything for sitting Bledsoe. To sign James we will have to waive one of DJJ, Reed, or Williams.

That's disappointing...

Anyway, there's no reason why we have to give James a guaranteed contract at this point in time. He's surpassed all expectations but with Reed coming back perhaps end of this year, early next year, it would be good to evaluate between him and DJJ before we create a spot. I'm not in favor of waiving Williams.

Suns have a few options here with opening up a spot for James.

1. Move Daniels and attach DJJ as a prospect for cap space/ 2nd

2. Stretch Knight

3. Apply for an exception

4. Work a Bled trade that involves us taking back a contract which we can buyout. Nothing else (except a pick)

5. Waive DJJ

Im not in favour of waiving any players on our team. I would be most happy with option 4

Trading Bledsoe and buying out the incoming player's contract would be incredibly expensive. The likely destinations would mean we're probably going to have to match $14m in salary and buying out around $14m just to make a roster spot for James doesn't really make sense.

Stretching Knight makes sense to me. As does waiving DJJ or Reed.

If we send Reed to the D League to rehab his knee, does that open up a spot for Mike James?

No, he has a guaranteed contract with the Suns.

“We’d certainly like to keep Mike, not only for this season but long-term,” McDonough told Burns & Gambo on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station. “We have about a month or so to make that decision.

“It won’t be a decision of whether we want to keep him or not,” McDonough added. “The decision will be whether we can agree on a contract that is acceptable to us and to Mike and his agent. I think we’ll get there.”

“He’s certainly proven that he’s not only an NBA player — that’s he’s a good NBA player, that he’s a rotational NBA player,” McDonough said, adding credit for the James signing goes to assistant GM Pat Connelly and international scout Emilio Kovacic.

So...what do you want to pay him?

I think that a $9M/3 years contract can be fair for both sides.

SO. First item on the agenda. I propose a resolution, that Mike James should start and play 30 minutes a game. Do I have a second?

This thread needs to be stickied ... by January James will be starting ... and everybody will be bitching about the Suns shiny brown star.

I'm biased against him because I really wanted to see Booker get the Harden/point guard role. Hopefully it'll wear off.

He's played fairly well so far but I believe teams just haven't scouted him yet. He's undersized and has short arms just by the eye test. There was several plays where John Wall just poked the ball free. Maybe he'll adjust, and I'm hoping for it, but I'm not overly optimistic.

I think he should have a heavy hand in running the offense but I'd also prefer to see him getting set up more than Harden does because I see Booker as a better pure shooter/scorer while I see Harden has having much better PG instincts even before coming into the league. So for me, I like Booker being paired with a strong floor leader who can run the offense for an extended amount of time if required. I just feel like some nights Booker is off offensively and could really benefit playing off ball more.

But of course I wouldn't be unhappy if Booker turned into a Harden type PG averaging 25/8 which isn't too far of a reach.

So if they can't work out a long term deal would he automatically be converted to a minimum contract after the 45 day period runs out? After that I assume he be a restricted FA this summer with an arenas provision?

Team has been 75 points better with James than Ulis on court this season (biggest like for like differential)

Having said that he can't go 12% FG in 4 of the last 5 games again (still had 96 O-Rating during that which is not bad considering).

He's been solid but he needs to stop shooting long step back 2's and he needs to get better at finishing around the rim.
