How good is this team going to be when healthy?

Post#1 » by boomershadow » Thu Nov 2, 2017 7:13 pm

When Turner went down, I did not think we would still end up going 5-3 to start the season out with. I hoped for good things from this team, but I expected chemistry to need time to develop. I expected some guys to need time to get used to having bigger roles, and things like that. To make it sound even more impressive, we're doing this without the guy that most people would say is our best player and without a guy that would give us some much needed depth on the wing.

Do you think we're going to be even better when we get Turner and GR3 back? Or do you think the team will need time to readjust to playing with those guys?

I started to believe in playoffs. Ok, this shooting % can't last too long but if we can fix 2nd unit maybe there is a chance for playoffs. Hopefully Turner and GR3 will help to improve the situation within the bench.

I definitely think this team can, and will make the playoffs.

For sure. Myles is a terrific talent. He will improve us a LOT. I think they should put Domas back into that second unit, where he will be able to salvage Lance a little bit. Otherwise, I don't know how you can justify giving Lance any playing time if GR3 is back.

unless Thad gets the backup 3 minutes, I see the second unit (1-5) as CoJo, Lance, GRob, Leaf, and Sabonis. I don't want to play Lance at 3 normally, but I think he and CoJo can be an effective 2nd unit backcourt.

GRIII will actually fit in better faster. He'll just take old man Wilkins' minutes and be better. Myles and Sabo can play together on offense but mitigate each other a bit on defense, so some matchups might be really tough. Obviously, Myles coming back will make us better.

We've been playing great, but I don't see us getting much higher than the 7th seed still. We've caught some teams flat-footed (Minny without Jimmy Buckets, San Antonio without Kawhi, Cleveland without a soul) and have needed to be historically good on offense to win a lot of these games. Given how hard this team plays, though, I would not be surprised if we somehow ended up with homecourt in the first round of the playoffs in this dumpster fire conference.

did you talk yourself out of no better than 7th as you wrote that paragraph? top 4 would be nice.

Honestly, I have no clue how good this team could be. Despite no Turner and GRIII we've started out 2 or 3 wins better than I ever could have guessed. Oladipo and Sabonis are playing out of their minds right now, how sustainable is this? When Turner comes back, how does Sabonis play coming off the bench? Less Big Al, which isn't a bad thing, but I really like the chemistry he had built with the first team.

Thad has really been bringing it the last few games as well, can he shift to the three depending on the matchup? Bogey has also had a nice run during the Pacers winning streak. GRIII would mean less Wilkins, which is good, and less reliance on Lance, which right now looks like a good thing as well. But by the time he's back, Lance may well be out of his funk.

The East is a peculiar place this year, so Indiana could conceivably land anywhere between 4 and 10. Right now, Oladipo is an All Star, but the can he keep this pace up? And will the return of Myles Turner slow down the productivity of Sabonis?

Honestly, I have answered nothing here, just working things through in my own mind. Four of the next five games are on the road, against some bad teams and teams we will be battling for playoff position come March and April. If we play like we have recently, winning three out of five seems pretty likely, especially with Turner back in the mix.

4th seed ceiling sounds about right. Boston and Washington are guaranteed to be better and Toronto very likely will as well. Cleveland will at least somewhat turn it around this year but I don’t see them finishing with over 50 wins. Milwaukee I have no idea. They have Giannis but the rest of their roster is meh and they have no Center except Monroe and he’s hurt right now. Miami is similar except they only have one PF. Orlando and Detroit will level out and I don’t see either finishing above 45 wins. Charlotte might be good and could get the 4th seed if Cleveland keeps struggling. Everyone else is a fringe playoff team at best.

At this point, kinda feels like Turner is never coming back. He's listed as doubtful for tomorrow nights game as well.

I honestly thought he'd miss 2 games, 4 games as the absolute max. I am starting to think something else is really wrong here.

I don't see this happening, but I'm actually wondering if we should bring Turner off the bench when he does get healthy. Not permanently of course, but right now, we have near perfect chemistry in the starting lineup.

Turner is better than Sabonis at a lot of things, but Sabonis is a much better rebounder, passer, and screen setter. These have been instrumental in our teams success right now. Moving him to the bench could honestly mess up our chemistry. I think easing Turner back into the lineup would be good, even if its a slow transition to him starting again.

The concussion protocol is very strict. I would have expected him back by now, but if he had a decent concussion he was probably feeling the effects for a while. They mentioned he has been working out and conditioning. Those are steps of working through the protocol. If he makes it through that without any symptoms he is a couple of full practices away from being back.

Turner is a game-time decision, upgraded to questionable.
