Brook Lopez is a problem....
I was excited when we got him but man has he been absolutely beasting these past few games. When we traded for him I said the best thing he will bring us is offensive consistency... And it's finally starting to show. Last year one of our biggest problems was that we didn't know who would get us buckets on any given night. As a young team we were so desperate that our most consistent scorer was our sixth man Lou Williams. Now with Brook, he is bringing us that consistent vet 20 PPG and it seems that he has finally understanding where his spots will be in the offense. I'm glad we are looking to get him touches in the post to settle us down when we get too frantic. I love this actually. We don't need to run on every possession. I like it when we go old school and post him up when we desperately need a basket. Those high percentage shots are critical for us . Especially with how bad we are shooting .
So with that said, Brook is a problem.... For Magic/Pelinka. He's exactly the type of big we need in Luke's offense on a young team like ours. Call me crazy but I'd like to find a way to keep him. Say we strike gold and get two FAs, I'd like to find a way to make him our third discounted max player. I honestly may even prefer him over Boogie . I think Boogie will be someone we have a good shot at getting. But I just HATE his temperament. He screams locker room cancer and I don't know how he will mesh with a young coach like Luke. Either way, I would be thrilled if Magic/Pelinka find a way to keep Brook on this team. Maybe he gives us a hometown discount being that he's from here and grew up a Laker fan.

I have no clue how the cap rules work. But can't we just sign the other 2 FAs first, then go over the cap to resign Brook with Bird Rights?

I agree we need to resign him. He was responsible for this win today, which leaves the windows open for having a respectable season. I see his impact on both ends, and the young guys gain confidence by playing with him. The only liability on the floor I see right now, is Lonzo Ball.

Which that will change when he's fully developed.

Agreed. It looks to be a typical yoyo rookie season for Lonzo. He's simply not use to playing againt the top tier athletes in the NBA. But I like his effort in other areas. He's just way behind Simmons as far as impact which is disappointing. I wanted to see this guy do what Simmons is doing now.

If we didn't have deng's contract we would have been able to sign him to a hometown discount type of deal even if we signed 2 max players - too bad we can't with that contract.

Lopez is a nice player who finally gives the Lakers a Big that can space the floor, something I’ve been desperate to see but let’s not go overboard.
First, there’s no way the Lakers will have the space for three max guys.
Second, I don’t even know that we need to be planning for multiple max guys if the young guys keep progressing.
Third, you just can’t pass up on a talent like Boogie if he’s available for BroLo. Headcase or not, Cousins is a much more talented player who gives you everything Lopez does and then some.
Numbers rule the universe.

Re: Brook Lopez is a problem....
We can go over the cap to resign Lopez... But it's going to be tough to keep him...
I will say this though... He's been really good on Offense the last 2 games... But Randle's been defending the paint better...
When Randle was in the game, Brooklyn stopped getting dribble penetration... When Lopez came back in, they were driving to the bucket with ease...
So as much as I'd like to keep him, I think other teams will value him a whole lot more than I will... Plus if we get any Max players at all, it's starting to look like Cousins might be the most available... Not sure how he and Lopez would play together... Sure on paper it could work but in practice, I'm not sure it does.

Re: Brook Lopez is a problem....
He's a defensive liability and doesn't rebound. He'll be unplayable in crunch time with any team with elite guards cuz he gets cooked in the pick n roll. If the 2017 FA plan works, i'd rather have a mobile defensive center that rebounds and protects the rim.

Dude, if there was no market for Noel, Len and Mirotic, then there probably isn't going to be that much more of a market for Brook Lopez.

And that's the reason why I'm passing on Cousins because he's stupid.

Lopez
KCP
Bogut
aRe all 1 year rentals the question on the table is ...
Do we re-sign them ???
The answer on the table is ..
Only if we can't get those much needed star players in FA
If we can't then resign them it's all we got left really???
So for 1 year rentals they aren't doing too bad?
I would love to see KCP return on a shorter contract???

His cap hold would keep us from having any space so you have to renounce it first.

Lopez, Zubacca and a pick for Porzingis.
Defense is an issue with Lopez. Porzingis is still getting better.

You can only go over the cap to re-sign him if you keep his bird rights, and if you keep his bird rights then his $20+ mil cap hold stays on the books, cutting your available cap space in half.

I understand that, I'm basically saying we'd have to REALLY like him to consider keeping him. He's fun to watch now but only a guy we'd keep if all our other plans fell through.

Re: Brook Lopez is a problem....
you can go over the cap to sign him but the problem is the cap hold that counts against the cap even when he's a free agent. Clear the cap hold by waiving the rights and you no longer can go over the cap to resign him... basically the NBA CBA doesn't want what you're suggesting to happenPenberthy wrote:I have no clue how the cap rules work. Re: Brook Lopez is a problem....
If Brook is willing to take less for a year, the Lakers could renounce Lopez's Bird rights next summer, sign FA's to max deals, then sign Lopez to one year with the Room Exception and retain his Bird rights to then sign him to a max deal (or whatever they wanted) in the summer of 2019.
