Marv, old as he is, is still currently more important in his role than MKG. He played fabulous defense on Aldridge last night and he’s the only big man we have that can do that while simultaneously stretching the floor.
I don’t think MKG will be playing PF while Cliff is the coach, because he likes his traditional lineups. Along with his injury history, he’s too short, too light and gets pushed around by large small forwards with little resistance. That would only work against tiny lineups like the heat and Celtics run where guys like Winslow are playing PF. I agree with whoever said it the other day, he’s better off using his strength and length advantages guarding smaller players like PGs.
I do value defensive players, but I love two way players even more. MKG has proven himself unreliable. When he did finish the season last year, it was pretty obvious he wasn’t close to the same player defensively. I’m just done giving him the benefit of the doubt. He shouldn’t be guaranteed a starter spot or 25 minutes a night if we have better lineup fits on the roster.
Currently I like him as a specialist for guarding PGs and Cliff likes to start him because he likes defenseive starters. His minutes are down, but I have no idea how this will play out when Nic comes back.
