I'm confused by the phrasing of this.

Are you asking if Ben would have had as good a true rookie season last year as he's had a redshirted rookie season this year?

Like, how much better is he able to play this year because of his redshirt season? Or was this level of play attainable if he had just played from the get go last year.

I think he would be a little better this season, but long term I don't think it would make a difference.

I think Simmons got less benefit out of redshirting than many other prospects would have.

Learning how to be a professional and maturing physically are the usual benefits you'd think of. Ben was pretty sound in those two areas already.

I'm of the belief that he'd be just as good as a rookie in 2016 as he's proven to be this year. He's one prospect I truly believe always would have hit the ground running.

All those hooks, runners and "weird" shots alot of people thought looked weird and inneffective are actually pretty effective.
It speaks to his touch and feel for the Game mostly that he is able to constantly make shots most people just cannot make.

He could be the Steph Curry of the Paint^^ .. Takes and makes shots where every other player is benched for even considering taking it..

One downside is those shots, generate less FTs and there's a level of uncertainty. But definitely hard to defend. Giannis can be the athletic finisher in the paint while Ben could be the finesse finisher in the paint. :)

Semi-OT. I have a friend who has mastered driving to the lane then finishing with the skyhook. So I dont doubt Ben couldn't also master that.

He focused on refining his PG abilities like ball handling, passing and reading the D while also refined his finishing around the rim. He has more variety/efficiency finishing around the rim (I believe he struggled in SL) while playing point forward at LSU is way different as full time PG of a winning team in the NBA

OT. A guy who can benefit red shirting is Lonzo.

LaVar needs to be red shirted. He is harming his son's career. The kid is clearly not ready for the attention he is getting, which is causing him to not develop at his own pace.

Jams60 wrote:My first post here on. I’m an Aussie and whilst I have had a passing interest in NBA basketball and did play when younger, I haven’t ever got into in a big way.

Ben Simmons is changing that. I actually started looking at those Thon Maker mix tapes on You Tube, which led me to Ben 3years back. I watched as many of the LSU games as I could on cable in Oz, luckily most of them were broadcast.

I watched the draft and when the Sixers took Ben I started to read about the team, and The Process. I’m hooked and a believer btw. T- Shirts on order, When he got injured last year I was so disappointed and have been looking forward to this season ever since.
I apologise for getting onto the bandwagon now and not having to sit through the last decade but in my defence my rugby league team in Oz, South Sydney Rabbitohs, went 43 years between championships so I have suffered.

As for Ben’s start, wow! If he did nothing more for the rest of his career, except to repeat his stats from his first 8 rookie games,
18.5 pts 9.6 reb 7.9 assists .4 blk 1.5 where would that sit him as an NBA player?

Hi all, I may as well just copy and paste this post as it is nearly identical to my situation. Just swap Jams Rabbitohs for my RL team WestsTigers and I am done.

Hopefully you all won't be inundated with dumb arse Aussies like the unfortunate 49er fans experienced when one of our stars played in the nfl as a 30 y.o rookie a couple of years ago.

Jams mentioned his team sucked and I too have suffered and probably worse than him. However the vibe here on fan forums and the atmosphere at games compared to when my tigers were last successful are delightfully similar. And after 9 games I am completely caught up in The Process.

Why I mention my team is for those who may like auspicious coincidences.
In 2005 the Tigers had a young team and a couple of soon to be stars, one in particular that was hypnotising fans with his unbelievable and rare attacking talent. The team was super entertaining to watch but being young struggled with defense. Then things clicked half way through the year and they went on to win the premiership/ championship. No one gave them a hope and in fact at one stage the betting odds were as low as 151:1 to win. As some here may not know how that stacks up and for comparison I thought I would check out what the sixers are paying right now to win the championship ....... 151:1! :D

Anyway I look forward to being apart of this special time you are all already enjoying.

Welcome. Voting starts around Jan if I recall. You can do it through nba.com.

He would be better this year if he had played 80 games last year. He would have had a year of knowing how best to get to the basket, what shots work, how to defend NBA caliber players. He would have been working with JoJo more and their ability to play together would be much more advanced (Jo still often misses Simmons when he is wide open in the key when he makes cuts or has mismatches).

More importantly he would be sitting on 90 NBA games playing point guard instead of 9.

OConnors continuing focus on this dumb hand thing rather than that he's having one of the best starts to a career ever is borderline trolling at this point. He's shooting 50+% from the field, who cares if he would be nominally better if he started shooting right handed 13 years ago?

I actually like that he’s tracking it and I do think it’s important Ben can shoot with his left hand up close.

To be fair, he's praised him as well.

"If Simmons maintains his present numbers (18 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists), he’ll become only the fifth player to ever average 10, nine, and eight (Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, and Russell Westbrook are the others). He would win Rookie of the Year in a landslide and maybe even earn an All-Star spot. Simmons is undeniably one of the league’s most gifted talents."

"Ben Simmons is dominating this season, plus he's starting to use his left hand more often than he did before."

Hmm, why is that trolling? It's an interesting thing lots of people were talking about before and it's extra interesting now since Simmons has had such a huge and effective year. Weird phenomenon, I'm sure lots of people who are just paying attention to Ben now will be struck by it and want to know more. That's what good blog-y journalism does.

Why am I not surprised that you are on board with someone obsessing about a minor issue?

I think it's important for every player in the NBA to shoot with both hands up close? Simmons is making 2/3 of his shots within 3 feet. His finishing isn't an issue. It's a very weird nit for a national writer to pick on a 21 year old that's playing at close to an all star level 9 games into his career, or it would be weird if you ignore that (a) he's a Celtics fan and (b) hes severely underrated Simmons for the last two years and had Ingram mocked #1 in that draft. Now that he's clearly looking wrong in that regard, rather than taking the L he's holding onto his hand thing

I bet that OConnor has written and spoken about this hand thing more than every other writer combined. He's carved out a niche as the "Ben Simmons wrong hand" guy.

Crazy how tough it is to defend a guy who's dominant driving right that if you try to let him go left, its impossible to challenge his shot for he shoots with his left while also a good finisher with his left
