Those pick protections are very funky. I'm still not sure I like them or not.

Would have preferred simply saying 2018 top ten protected and got it over with. But likely the Suns were the ones asking for the ability to defer the pick if it didn't come in the 11-16 range this season.

I think the Suns drove the pick deferral decision in an attempt for the pick to come in bigly for them at some point down the road.

yeah.. suns want to sell this like they will likely get a lotto pick. we said sure but its gonna be one at the back end. its funky but no big deal. I actually like it and could see the model being used again by others.

30th pick you meant. 8-)

So unless the Bucks are the 8th seed in 2018 or 2019, yeah as long the Bucks make the playoffs the pick would most likely be available in 2020.

I think that was a herculean effort on his end to keep his head on straight in that role. i think hes just a guy from here on out. if we go against him I'm not sweating it.

I saw the pick protection ended right after Giannis' contract lapsed, and that was probably the point, but injuries happen, and we are pretty dependent upon him. It would be particularly tough if one happened that last year. Earlier we could take a significant hit too.

Buckpack was wrong this time. If the alternative out there was dealing for Reggie Jackson and a 1st, we were always close. It was just a matter of how much pick protection we'd require and how they viewed Jackson vs. Monroe/clearance. They may be able to flip Monroe for another pick now.

It's basically a 2020 20something pick unless Giannis goes down for a long period of time the next two seasons.

lvckv wrote:These protections do mean that we can't really trade any first-rounders now...

I guess we can trade around the protections.

So for example we can trade the 2018 pick but it only conveys if it's 5-10/17-20, and so on.

If this works out properly you shouldn't give up that pick for 3 years, that's huge. Because obviously they still need to add talent so still having picks this year and next, if at least one pans out to be a player could be a big difference. They're going to need cheap players like that contributing. In away though, giving them it this year due to underachieving and getting a new coach wouldn't be the worst thing, would need the new coach though.

This isn't a slam dunk.
Anyone that tweets 'I don't wanna be here' carries with him some concerns.
I sure hope we have someone in the locker room strong enough to not let Bledsoe take over.
If he hates Phoenix, it sure will be interesting what he thinks of Milwaukee in January.
That being said, it was most likely a risk worth taking.

Pick protections are a clear home run for the Bucks.

I think this is true, and frankly, I'm fine with it. If this ends up being a problem, it's going to be a drop in the problem bucket and really is just a one-year deferral of a post-catastrophe rebuild.

Assuming we make the playoffs as a better than a 6 seed; after the season we could then move our 2018 pick...correct??

Most lopsided poll in Bucks board history (excluding POG polls)?

Yea they now have potentially an unprotected first in 2021 from both Miami and us.

The problem is it will be harder to deal a first next year if we want to make another win now trade or if we want to dump a contract. Would have been a million times better for this just to be a top 3 or unprotected pick this year.

Yeah the Suns are rolling the dice. Sure there's a risk but I'm fine with it

The probability is it would transfer in 2020 and be in the 20's. But there is major downside for us. Agree with PP I'd take the top 10 or even top 7 protection this year if they were offering. We have a better idea of where we're at right now and there would be less chance of a calamity.

I could see a scenario where two years from now we lose midds and bledsoe and have a anchor of a contract jabari preventing us from being a contender. Wish it was less protected the next two years. Too much crazy stuff can happen in 3 years and it could become a Brooklyn type pick.

Yep. I don't think 11-16 happens this year just because the East is so bad and that's a narrow range, but nearly every good/respectable player on the team except Giannis or Snell is past their athletic prime and/or a chronic injury risk. 4-16 the following year could happen if Giannis gets hurt and Thon and Wilson don't improve.

That 1-7 protection 3 years from now is nice though, because that's where the real risk comes in. Extend Jabari, lose Khris and Bledsoe to free agency (or overpay to keep them and watch them decline precipitously, knowing it's their last contract anyway), get nothing from your picks, Giannis gets frustrated... that's a very realistic recipe for disaster.
Wut we've got here is... faaailure... to communakate.
